If you need a summary of how un-fit and how much I've always hated exercise: I can't even ride a bike. I always HATED having to move one more step than I strictly need to, I never saw the point or pleasure in voluntarily running on the spot when I could much rather spend that time reading, watching or painting something. And so, it's no surprise that the accumulated uselessness and hatred for working out lead to years of trying to be healthier but always just quitting the gym. For the first time in my life, I've managed to be consistent and actually enjoy exercise with the help and guidance of my personal trainer, so whether or not you can get one too, here's everything mine taught me and all the ways she changed my attitude and behaviours towards exercise.
0:00 Intro, how Elizabeth can't ride a bike

16:30 Part 4: how to be consistent without being bored and falling off

My father once said to me, after I complimented him on a particular feat of endurance him and his friend went through as young men, "You know, it would be a real shame if you had to rely on your body and it let you down" - I loved my father, and those words motivate me every day to push myself. Maybe that could work for you?

I quit lifting to climb and it changed my exercise from a chore to a passion.
I focus on climbing harder routes rather than looking in the mirror and deciding what I need to improve. Getting muscular is a happy accident. My social circles revolve around climbing, so I end up at the gym because I want to see my friends. It's that same sort of accountability she talks about but lead by a carrot as opposed to a stick (friends being disappointed in you for not going).

Not just climbing, but any physical sport, hobby or activity really. I love climbing, but also find myself fire spinning and dancercising a lot the last few years and I've always found it so much easier to stick to than regular exercise because it's something I genuinely _want_ to do, not just something I feel like I _need_ to do.

â€đŸŒ· Beautiful words, worth reposting, from time to time:
We did not see God, but with the mind/commonsense we came to know Him- we knew Him in the sense that the evidence indicated His existence, so we became certain of His existence -, and even the ones who deny his existence are a proof of His existence.
also, from the Creator’s patience with those who disbelieve in Him and disobey Him, we see his forbearance, and His generosity towards even those who don't believe in him and disobey him, Glory be to Him.
❀ Beautiful words: It is said that the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family, said, for teaching us positive open mindedness ((wisdom-/truth/knowledge/all that is good and true-
It is what the believer is looking for, wherever he finds it, he shall take it)), and ((Seek knowledge even in China)) even though China was not a Muslim country, and the words of Al-Shafi’i
      My opinion/doctrine
It is correct, but it may bear some errors, and the opinion / doctrine of others is more likely to be wrong, but it may be right sometimes.
& beautiful words are the words of the Qur’an that should be understood and applied: (And no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another) meaning don't generalize don't judge a person and take revenge from him even though he did not do anything, just because you want to take revenge from one of that other person relatives whom did a very bad horrible thing, or because of a number of people from that other person tribe for example who done a bad thing, or you try to take revenge from innocent people who got the same religion or sect or ethnic background, and this is nice teaching too from the Quran (If any of the polytheists seek your protection, then protect him).
đŸŒ· A beautiful prayer: Oh God, stop us from your forbidden deeds â€đŸŒ·
Oh God, forgive us for all our past sins and shortcomings, and prevent us from that for the rest of our lives.
And beautiful words from the Prophet Muhammad or Imam Ali, peace be upon them both: ((If you learn a craft, you are safe from poverty))
đŸŒ·â€ Important and beautiful words..for reflection and contemplation:
Even if we suppose that the Companions, i.e. the people who saw the Prophet, were all mountains, despite the conflict that occurred between them, it remains that the Prophet said
((The parable of the people of my household among you is like the parable of Noah's ark. Whoever boards it is saved, and whoever lags behind drowns and perishes)) And Noah's son went to a mountain and left the ark, and Noah's son drowned.
We must not give up adhering to those who are perfect from the family of the Prophet.
but also we should not consider them as gods, and at the same time we should never underestimate them, and we should not think that others are equal to them, the best thing is the middle way.

Hi! I don't know if this helps, but there is a big difference between being a lazy person, someone that just doesn't care and chooses to not do stuff because is too much of a burden and someone that passionately wishes they could be able to do something and tries but can't. People with ADHD or anxiety, for example, struggles with keeping up with a schedule and building habits. Is like they wanna do it but their mind is not helping. A lot of other circumstances influences this (trauma, environment, relationships, etc.) Everyone needs to do things at their own pace and find the ways that work the best for them, is always different! She is not lazy (I wish she didn't use that word) and if you are here trying to find ways to do your thing, you aren't either (:

The two biggest things that have made me finally work out consistently have been the following.
    First, pick non-negotiable workout days.
Rain or shine, high or low energy, Wednesday(as an example) will be a workout day, so even if I'm exhausted or hate the idea of it, I'll do a pale, weak version of the workout that day but I'll get it done. More often than not the workout ends up being a pretty decent one irregardless because once you get started you get into it.
The second thing I've done is found a reliable time where people or commitments are unlikely to get in the way and inhibit be from getting my workout in. For me that has been waking up at 6am. Everyone is asleep, I have a light breakfast while watching the sunrise and spoil myself with that special alone time, then, feeling recharged from that, I do my workout from 7am to 8am. This way it's done before any business calls come in or any stores are open where I'd need to run errands or anything. I used to be a late riser, but this routine has made me change that as I really cherish my quiet, alone sunrises and the feeling of accomplishment from having worked out before most people are even up and running. It starts my day off on a good note no matter how south it goes from there 😅
    Hope that helps ❀

I paused the video to list my own whys and weirdly enough mine were also 1. To be a healthy active mom one day 2. To be like my cousins who are people I admire and respect more than anyone and who exercise and take care of their bodies as a major part of their lifestyle. And 3. To spend more time in my physical body and outside of the mental headcloud where I keep getting lost in. Love this video so far and hearing you list such similar reasons made me a bit emotional because I never really take my own motivations seriously. I always feel dumb for not just doing it.

Omigosh! I don't think I've ever met anyone else who never learned how to ride a bike as a child. I was so embarrassed about it for the longest time. I relate so much to this in general- I KNOW exercise makes me feel better, but depression has been a huge barrier, and I've been through all the cycles of exercising, quitting, and started again.

    • @elizabethfilips
      @elizabethfilips  Pƙed rokem +2

HEYA adrienne, and yayy there's more of us who can't ride bikes! and same, I'm still embarrassed about it (but I think this summer I'm going to actually try, but I'm SOOO scared I'll break something, they seem way too fast to be reasonable, I wonder if we've past the point where we were too young to be scared?) and honestly, it's like going on a walk or out of the house when depressed - makes you feel better but might as well not change a thing bc the barrier to actually starting it is too high - accountability is the besttt for that (bc you know it'll make you feel better so there's no risk there). if you send a text to a friend and say 'i have to have gone on a walk by tonight, can you pls text me later to check I did?' and it 100x the chances of you doing it (also easier said than done, I'd probably only be able to do that days and days in 😬 sending love though xx

@@elizabethfilips When I was young, I was jealous of the kids in my neighborhood who had bicycles, and I was always asking to ride theirs. My parents bought me my first bike (a Schwinn five speed) when I was twelve, and they gave the my first road bike when I turned seventeen. I became somewhat of a cycling addict, and on a few years I've held racing licenses. Do not draw the wrong conclusion; I was far from a talented racer. Nonetheless, I enjoy moving a bike quickly down the road. These days, I have a couple of bespoke bikes I enjoy whenever I can.

Thank you for your insight. As someone who is trying to build an exercise routine for the first time in his life, the most helpful change was to work out at a time that works for my bio rhythm. I am a morning person and I work out as the first major thing in the morning, so nothing else occupies my time.

    • @monsieurbono
      @monsieurbono Pƙed rokem

I have found aerobic exercise much more beneficial (swimming, walking, bicycling, running, rollerblading, skiing, judo etc.) than weight training (good in small quantities but generally boring and the diet can mess you up). And if you are able to exercise outside rather than a treadmill even better, but I know it is just no possible for everyone or even safe. When I was very young I would do weekly yard word and then a massive cleanup of the yard with my mother where we would basically compost everything at the end of the summer and it was a great memory I have with her, may she rest in peace, but we would strip most of the overgrown foliage and put it out for the street cleaners. She was not big on exercise, but she stayed very busy with things she loved to do and working. I wish more people did aerobic activities, it has got to be the best thing for your heart and physical well being. I know now I am limited and just going out and working for an hour or two, which I hate, can have a huge impact on my spirit and outlook. I get wanting to lay in bed especially when I don't get many opportunities to just rest and recharge my batteries for the next scheme. I have found that it is almost impossible to over due it with exercise and you almost have to force yourself to rest as it can cause damage physically if you stress out your body maybe not at the time. Yes it may feel good to run ten extra miles or do a marathon but I find that mindset a bit extreme. Some people in fitness work push levels of fitness that just aren't viable or practical for the rest of us and yeah it can make one feel less than perfect and its okay. Exercise is supposed to be good for YOU.

I also sometimes did things I didn't like, which sometimes ruined the experience for me. I did however discover that I like skipping and standing yoga, since I have wrist problems. The low speed of yoga also gave me the time to do the exercises properly, so I felt less clumsy.
I used to be motivated to look better but that motivation never lasted long, because I didn't see the results I wanted. However, exercising to feel better, to clear my mind and to not feel pain in my body, that works for me. I mostly do yoga and walks, and sometimes I try other stuff.
I follow a lot of different yoga videos, since I also get bored easily of doing the same stuff in the same order.

Excellent video! For me the hardest part of exercise is the difficulty in making a decision to do it. Once I'm doing it, I usually can complete (and enjoy) working out. I like that you've focused on creating a larger overall context for working out, as I'm sure that helps. In short you've created an "architecture" for working out, prior to doing it.

To help me with that I have done two things.
      First, pick non-negotiable workout days.
Rain or shine, high or low energy, Wednesday will be a workout day, so even if I'm exhausted or hate the idea of it, I'll do a pale, weak version of the workout day but I'll get it done. More often than not the workout ends up being a pretty decent one irregardless because once you get started you get into it.
The second thing I've done is found a reliable time where people or commitments are unlikely to get in the way and inhibit be from getting my workout in. For me that has been waking up at 6am. Everyone is asleep, I have a light breakfast while watching the sunrise and spoil myself with that special alone time, then feeling recharged from that I do my workout from 7am to 8am.
