Exploring A New River Smallmouth Fishery

- Being on the road almost half of the time means that I am always looking for new water to explore along the way. This particular smallmouth fishery in Virginia is along my drive from home to the @boonedoxusa241 headquarters in North Carolina. I've been eyeing it on recent drives, and decided to take five hours and explore one section below a dam. This video shows the process of exploration.
Hey Jeff thanks for all your content man , it’s quality stuff and this channel deserves to be much bigger. I just got my first kayak about a month ago and I’m also new to fishing. The knowledge I’ve gained from your videos has helped me out a ton and I’m landing more and bigger fish out here in the Kentucky creeks. I hope to do an inflatable build one day.
Kentucky has some great water. Thanks for watching.
Jeff, you really have a cool channel with your own style and offering that is unique to everything else out there. Really enjoy it. Thanks for your time.
Thanks for the kind words. I enjoy educating and storytelling.
Great context and useful information for kayakers and other products that fit the industry. Keep up the good work.
Thanks. I have some upcoming episodes in Georgia, California, Idaho and Minnesota. Lots of driving and a few really great days of fishing.
I love that your critical concepts can apply to vastly different water bodies. We don't have any dams like that around me so normally the only current/volume factor is precipitation, BUT many of the smaller creeks, ditches, and marshes I fish which are connected to Lake Erie have currents effected daily by wind and the (almost negligible) lake tides. Throughout the day, most of the streams that empty into the lake, even the major named creeks, have backflow pushing upstream. Sometimes this backflow can be ripping fast, nearly too fast to paddle against, and a few hours later the flow will reverse to a gentle downstream direction. The big rivers generally don't change flow direction like this since they have so many more tributaries and drains connected.
Your lessons are always appreciated and I hope you have you a good trip, Jeff!
Clear Lake in California (and upcoming video) had wind generated current in one of the creeks we fished. Erie is ocean-like for sure.
Thanks for all the information Jeff. So easy to learn with you. Safe travels. Looking forward to the next video
Been enjoying all youre content i can find, along with content from you comrades.
I call 5 for 5 a decent day this time of year.
Just seen you're up to 10k subscribers, congratulations. Shows it takes consistency and dedication. Like your content, very educational. Keep up the good work!
Thanks. It was a slow, 7 year build
10k congrats should be 100k thanks mike
Surprised those rises didn’t ring the dinner bell.
It got the striper moving. I think that it’s so regular that it’s not the same impact as a natural rise.
I’m am glad you were able to stop on way down to GA. The cows were cool just chilling out. Still glad you caught 5! Also I would never be able to get my Nucanoe back up those steps. I would have unload my gear. Maybe back in High School. Catch you soon brother. Hoping your travels are going ok.
I’m seriously considering a winch or pulley. The raft guys use pulleys all the time at access points.
@@TheLittleStuffyou got me thinking. Utilize one that goes in the hitch of the truck. Run 12v from battery and all good. I like it. Maybe we can throw a Boonedox sticker on it. I get 10 percent commission 😂
Id be on rivers and lakes and really looking forward to having motorized kayak which will open so much more opportunity for me
You gotta get on the white river in Indiana sometime. That’s my home river I’m on it all the time best fish is a 21
I laid eyes on it last spring but didn’t have time.
@@TheLittleStuff it’s not deep but it holds some good ones . I found a really sweet spot last week haven’t fished it yet due to the weather but it’s a damn that you gotta go up river to get to
I like your method of fishing creeks and rivers with the motorized inflatables. This removes the need for shuttle driver or second car with a buddy. What is your upstream range in conditions like those in this video? I’d use it to motor up while throwing lures and drift back while fly fishing. Could I anchor in that current and stand and pick apart a section with the fly rod or is anchoring only feasible on still water? Thank
I did 14.3 miles last week - about 7 upstream then float back downstream. That was in heavy flow from a thunderstorm
Id like to get a better kayak with the torqueedo on it. Tough place to ask such an involved question but best recomendation for kayak and retailer that will service such in the area of hagerstown md/chambersburg pa area.

@@TheLittleStuff thank you, will check them out
Im thinking the inflatables, im mid 60s so transportation is a big factor
Jeff great video, what knot do you use for your leader to braid
Double Uni
Do you use the spinning rods on moving baits because they let you throw at any angle from any position?
Not sure why. I have 8 rods with me on this trip. 5 spinning and 3 baitcasters. It’s nice to switch between the two in order to reduce hand/wrist fatigue from many casts over hours when power fishing.
Knife? Anyone know what knife he was using?
Skallywag Tactical. Dive Tool
Whats your thoughts on the non sponson osprey vs the sponson? Any chance there will be a 12’ non sponson?
Maybe.
Id be on rivers and lakes and really looking forward to having motorized kayak which will open so much more opportunity for me
Dave, dig into the “Inflatable Kayaks” playlist.
