Salzburg is maybe Austria’s most famous city after Vienna. In this Austria travel video I’m going on a travel walking tour through this magical and romantic city which serves as the perfect gateway to the Alps. Along the way I will give you some hopefully useful ideas on what to see in Salzburg. Make sure you watch to the end where I will provide some additional tips and answers to questions you may have.
Salzburg is the fourth largest city in Austria and is located about 150 km (93 mi) South-East from Munich and 300 km (186 mi) west of Vienna. Salzburg's historic center (German: Altstadt) is known for its Baroque architecture and is one of the best-preserved city centers north of the Alps. It has a whopping 27 churches and is dominated by the massive Hohensalzburg Fortress. Salzburg is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tourists and travelers usually come to Salzburg to tour the historic centre and the scenic Alpine surroundings. So when you come to Salzburg, make sure you also check out the amazing little alpine towns and villages in close proximity, such as Hallstatt, Bad Ischl, St Gilgen, St. Wolfgang, Gosau and Zell am See.
What is Salzburg known for and why is it a favorite with tourists? Well, Salzburg is of course known as the birthplace of the 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Because of its history, culture, and attractions, Salzburg has been labeled Austria's "most inspiring city”.
Geographically, Salzburg sits on the banks of the River Salzach, at the northern boundary of the Alps. The mountains to Salzburg's south contrast with the rolling plains and hills to the north. The closest alpine peak, the closer to 2000‑meter-high Untersberg, is less than 16 kilometres (10 miles) from the city center. This area is flanked by two smaller hills, the Mönchsberg and Kapuzinerberg. Interestingly, and as a fun fact, Salzburg has about the same latitude as Seattle.
What makes Salzburg such a great city to explore is that it’s probably one of the most walkable cities you can find. Everything is in close proximity and you won’t have to cover large distances between the various sightseeing landmarks.

I visited Vienna in May 2018 and Saltzburg more than 30 years ago. I like both cities but I prefer Vienna. When I visited Saltzburg I missed many places, therefore I need to go back.
Both cities are amazing - and quite different. Salzburg has more of a cozy vibe, and of course the mountain panorama around it. While Vienna is more impressive with all the amazing architecture. Check out my Vienna videos if you have not seen them yet 👍😊

Hello Janus! I must say I was also waiting for this one on beautiful Salzburg. I love Salzburg! It’s one of my favorite cities in Europe. I was there in June 2019 for my third time and I still say I have to go back as I want to go to Hallstatt and all those beautiful towns on the lake region. But next time I will go on my own to spend plenty of time and explore and absorb all the beauty of the region.

As you have said during your tips, Salzburg is definitely a "must see"
We have only been once during August in 2014, however I didn't find it too busy. The day trip we took while visiting this beautiful town was to Berchtesgaden to see the Eagles Nest with its dark history but amazing views. Next time I will make time for the towns near by in Austria which you showcased in previous videos. Cheers my friend.

Another wonderful video. We fell in love with Salzburg in 2018. The old town was magical. We were cheesy and took the Sound of Music tour - but it was still fun and a must see (I think) for any American tourist. We also made it to Hallstatt - which to this day remains the most beautiful place I have ever seen with my own eyes. I highly recommend St. Gilgen and Bad Ischl. (You go through both to get to Hallstatt.)

@@julian8986 The temperatures are below 20 degrees most of the year. Only in June, July and August does it get hot. But even during the summer months the temperatures are cool and pleasant in the mountains. The winters can be cold and snowy. Excellent for skiing. Probably much different than temperatures in Iran.

It just boggles my mind who goes there with such wonderful cafes. My host in Vienna once told me that it has become some kind of cultural status symbol for the new generation in particular. I gave up.
Now I am torn if I go to Austria first or Spain. I saw some part of Austria before while travelling on the train. I am aware how beautiful the countryside is.

Thank you Arcilla. I usually check for cheapest prices on rentalcars.com. Europcars tends to be a reasonably priced company but there are quite a few others too and it’s useful to check prices for the dates you plan to go.
It's a wonderful country with beautiful streets and nature. Video and editing maximize the appeal. I made a virtual trip.

I’m sure there are some clubs and bars but I didn’t go to any. My hunch is that Vienna will be a much better place for nightlife
there is a nightlife, not the best but quite good - before 10pm you can visit bräustüberl and for the real nightlife you should go to ruldofskai, giselakai or gstättengasse

The best, most convenient and frankly coolest way is to take a horse carriage through town. This will take you to all the major monuments and sights. To visit the fortress, you can take the funicular up but in the castle itself you would need to walk.
