    Finally back in to the swing of things with a simple job.
    The plastic Tioga pedals I’d fitted to the DB Ascent were no good. The bearings need work but more importantly, they just don’t have any grip!
    Today, I decided to replace the pedals with some nice metal ones from Wellgo (after swapping the cages around...) and fit some toe clips and straps. Not every pedal can accept a toe clip. My modern mountain bike pedals have a lip which stops cages being fitted but these were perfect. Having the strap the right way is a massive bonus too. Very easy to install and use and should hopefully improve the efficiency of my pedalling!

    Nah that wrong sorry dude. Fit the straps with the buckle going through the pedal first. Then put a twist in the strap between the the two slots in the rear of the pedal. Then feed the strap upwards from the inside. This way you can easily pull upwards to tighten the straps and the twist will stop the straps pulling further through the pedal. Old trick.... But works every time

    Very good, thanks. A couple of suggestions
    It’s easier to put the cage on when the pedal is off the bike
    Personally I just set the straps about right, but still can get the foot in and out without tightening / loosening
    For me the benefit is that I know my foot cannnot slip off the pedal, and it does not have to be tight for that

    I've used Toe-Clips before and when I bought them. Back in prehistoric times. I was told to twist my foot like you would with a Clipless pedal to loosen the strap. Reaching down to release the strap wouldn't be safe. Especially if you need to unclip in a hurry.

    The lost art of the toe clip. I use a MKS setup with nylon straps for all of my bicycle touring. That way I can wear street shoes (VANS) on and off the bike.

    Two observations;
    - strap is on the wrong way round
    - why no reflector on the back of the pedal?
    Get well soon!

    You can't pull down with your foot in the pedal.
