It is important to point out that the 2013 + 2.0T engines are better than previous years. Also, if you don't plan on modding it, the 3.8 could be a better choice but if you want mods and more HP go with the 2.0t

    • @midnight2moonlight200

Its still a theta II engine which are dogshit. I work for Hyundai and the 3.8 and 2.0T are both equally shit. The best Genesis coupe ive seen was a 2jz-gte swap and a K swapped one. Both the 3.8 and 2.0 virtually have same issues. There transmissions do tend be solid though surprisingly. I will never understand why people like our cars when they are built like crap. Hyundai contracts the cheapest manufacturers. Hyundais prime was easily the 90s when they paired up witb Mitsubishi with their drivetrain makings.

@@midnight2moonlight200 for someone who "works for Hyundai" you sure seem to sleep on their products. Company is at its peak now. The 90s era was only notable for the mitsu parts like you already said and that wasn't special. Now they're building it "themselves" also not certain how "dogshit" they could be when they keep ranking high in reliability from both shill or bought sources and unbiased alike. Sounds more like you've just been super unlucky as to end up stuck working on what dogshit there is legitimately. Which... Would definitely give justification for your views. To say the least.

Make sure to do some research on the different model years because there are pros and cons to picking different ones. I’m 48 and have never been any kind of a vehicle buff and had zero mechanical abilities. I saw a 2013 2.0T standard Genesis Coupe with a blown engine for sale at my local scrap yard and they happened to have a donner car with all of the necessary parts. I found a complete engine replacement video and said to myself, “I can follow a video tutorial” so I borrowed some tools from some friends (they thought I had gone insane) 105 hours later, I had the engine changed, everything fixed, licensed and drove it away. 🎉 I kept it for one winter (the absolute worst winter car I’ve ever driven) and part way into to the summer (best summer car I’ve ever owned - flashy and great fun, radio was excellent quality for my tastes ❤). I traded it for a truck I didn’t end up using much so I’ve put a ‘new to me’ Genesis back on my goal list. Next one I pick up will be a standard 3.8 and I found videos showing how to add the wide body kits and turbo charge it 🚀 I’m not going to let the next one go once I get my hands on it. I miss the thing every time I see one.

Hyundai service writer here. ITS DOES NOT MATTER HOW WELL TAKEN CARE OF THE VEHICLE IS. Time and time again I see this need engines under 60k miles. Wether the 2.0 or 3.8. Ringlands seize, carbon builds up and connecting rod bearings go. Only reliable Gen coup is one without a Hyundai motor.

I’ve had my daily 2.0t bk1 for almost 2 years now, main thing for reliability is the oil viscosity. DO NOT USE 5w-20 because the cap says so. These turbo cars require 5w-40 and oil changes every 2500-3000 miles! And like many others I wish I went the 3.8 route, as it’s more reliable but much less aftermarket support if that’s what’re going for. But these cars are insanely underrated!

Correction about engine blowing, it’s not true! The only reason why some gencoupes blew up their engine is because they’re pushing psi all the way up to 22 and more just to get higher numbers on the dyno, which is not safe anymore for stock internals. Been driving mine for 10yrs with only 20 psi max and never had issues with engine 🤷🏻‍♂️

Oh shit its my car! I’ve got an R-spec. They really need help firming up the drivetrain, tranny mount and diff bushings at least… also mine had a bad 6-speed and apparently that is somewhat common… short shifter and new shifter bushings can help there. Just did all that plus single mass lightweight flywheel and it does drive amazing now… but I probably wouldn’t have got it if I knew the tranny was gonna go out on me. Oh yeah and they have one of the best sounding 4-cylinders I’ve ever heard once you put a catback on it. (Or full exhaust but I live in commiefornia and don’t want to swap shit every two years)

Due to the corporate average fuel economy stuff Hyundai needed to get all the mpg out of the car so they went with 5w20 on the oil cap 5w20 5w30 and 5w40 in the owners manual *1 has a very important statement for the 2010 model year. Engines started to fail from it not protecting the engine bearings said bye bye then rod knock. Then 2011 they said 5w30 and 5w40 in the owners manual but continued to put the 5w20 oil cap on the cars. Still to this day the owners put 5w20 or 5w30 in the car and never look in their owners manual to see that 5w40 is recommended for better vehicle performance that is what *1 has said since 2010. Engines from both the 3.8 and 2.0t fail and get posted on Facebook everyday.
