Censored Card Artworks - Exosisters Brighter Clothing

- There are a lot of censored cards in the game, but the exosisters have one of the strangest ones out of all of them, where they simply just made all of their clothes have a brighter shade of color.
With Exosister Elis, you can see in her japanese artwork that her outfit is a dark green with black stripes. And in the TCG art, they changed the color to a much brighter green, and changed all the stripes to white
With Exosister Stella, her jap artwork is a dark red dress with black stripes, which again was changed in the TCG art to a much brighter red with white stripes.
Exosister Irene has a dark blue dress with black stripes, which is changed to a brighter shade of blie with white stripes.
Exosister Sophia has a really dark purple outfit with black stripes, which is changed to a brighter purple with white stripes.
However funny enough, Exosister Martha has zero changes from her jp and tcg artworks. Although she was released much later after the initial run of exosisters, and her japanese art is more in line with the international releease being a brighter color by default, though only she was allowed to keep black stripes.
Now the going theroy as to why these cards were censored in this way is simply to make their outfits look less like real military uniforms, and more like fantasy ones.

If anything, the mere fact that this logic is known enough to be considered by anyone speaks to how much of a taboo war became after all that happened on the last century.
Probably the dumbest censorship considering that their XYZ counterparts are brighter to reflect their transformation into magical girls, is like comparing the dull reality (hence, the darker colors) with the bright fantasy.
It’s insane to think that there is a highly paid executive in Konami America that decides how waifus should look in the TCG
But they're still cute cheery anime girls in all of the non-XYZ cards, which matters way more than the color of their uniforms. They don't seem dull at all.
@@hoodedman6579 No but they seem much more, human. Mortal with more realistic colors denoting the station they are at. The TCG just turns them into full anime girls when the OCG looks more like Tanya anime girls.

Kids know what soldiers are. I think it's not to confuse younger audience that girls with dark clothes are having a great time in the military. Basically the military sounding fun when we all know it's not.

Oversaturation of everything, not just artwork. I accidentally bought an OCG Structure Deck online once, and the TCG boxes/packaging are downright ugly in comparison. Seriously, I can guarantee they'd sell more Structure Decks just from using the OCG's style of packaging.
The TCG SD boxes are something like 30% larged than in the OCG, too. What in God's Names are they trying to compensate for?

@@freeddreamer793 By any crew on a military/navy ship, yes. The crews of normal ships wore normal clothing, not sailor uniforms, because they wouldn't want to impersonate/be mistaken for the navy. Similar designs used on cruise ships have the clear intent of evoking navy sailor uniforms.

The recolors were because the outfits looked too much like the outfits of various countries in a certain faction that japan was a part of in world war 2
The dark colors and designs are too reminiscent of 1940s germany

Not everybody cares about bright militaristic colors like that. Already seen people associate this with "Sailor Moon" and this comparison "makes the saturation worse" apparently. Its like taking a semi-realistic shooter game with dark colors as a theme, then saturating them. Would most people care if the colors were "historically accurate?" They probably would prefer the darker colors because that's the visual theme. I'm quite neutral on this cuz I don't care about TCGs, but that's just me.

Also the OCG versions of asophiel and kaspitell have their on xyz summon effect as a "you can" while in the tcg its mandatory
There might be more of a theory that this deck feels like it's tied into the World War 1 or 2 and Konami wouldn't want to get in trouble for English audiences

These bright colors are a sore on the eye. I like the more darker original ones. They remind me of Valkyria Chronicles.

i usually hate censored card artworks in yugioh, but in this case it looks more like a recoloring than any censorship, which i'm a bit more tolerant of. i like the ocg more than the tcg colors since it looks more realistic and less fantasy-like, but i also don't mind the tcg colors that much either.

I never looked at exosisters closely so the from the white stripes and bright clothes I thought they were nuns. The light attribute, anti-graveyard effects and life point gain also helped gaslight me into thinking they were nuns

I think the TCG art is the original and the OCG art is the modified. You can see the artifacts around the lights and darks in the OCG print, usually saved for things that were edited in post.
I can see why they changed it. As a German i associated it with a different time XD

I mean, obviously, the holocaust was bad, but it's not like every German soldier worked in the concentration camps. It also doesn't change the fact that the German military uniform was designed by Hugo Boss and is absolutely stylish for military uniforms.

The bright color for the TCG looks nice, and the darker ones are really good for having a nice saturation to them as well.

Personally, i like the TCG version more.
It fits their facial expressions more.
If the art showed them in a battle or in a bad situation, i think the darker colors would be better.
But they are shown happy, relaxed, and in the daytime where nothing bad is happening
It's interesting seeing everyone hating on the TCG arts. I kinda like them. The character with the red dress especially reminds me of a Little Red Riding Hood or something, which is interesting as a design choice.
The brighter colors look better honestly
Konami America hate that card artwork wasn't made by them so they make unnecessary changes to feel better. That's my takeaway.

The dark green reminds me a lot of WWII German uniforms, so that's probably why they changed them to be less like real military uniforms.

This really is up at the top of the "weirdest censorships in YGO". Only thing comparable might be when they censored armpits by making them less detailed (I think it was on an Evil-Twin card or something?)

The black stripes over the white belt is similiar to Italian WW2 officer uniforms.

No changes for Martha because person who changed other Exosister was already fired.
They have thresholding on all the cards, so it may have been changed because the coloring format was damaged, alot of ppl forget it but jpeg and other image formats degrade color and quality over too many duplications.
Even when you zoom in on this video you can see thresholding.
I think the main reason for the subdued colors for the ocg, was to give it a more militant look similar to European military uniforms as japan adores it so much!

Given the other girls can already turn off the GY, prevent summons from the GY, or banish from the GY, I can't think of an anti-graveyard thing an Xyz of Martha could do. A Spell/Trap negate to go with Gibrine's monster negate could be something. A field spell would be neat depending on what it does.
A field spell to recycle exosisters from the GY and boost attack to OTK would be cool.

My guess is it’s probably only due to printing the cards in different parts of the world. In the magic tcg, the same cards can look different levels of brightness only due to what printing press they used.
Still doesn't explain the sheer difference in brightness _and_ the differences within digital mediums like Master Duel.

Honestly, I'd argue this one makes sense; as you surmurised the reason is pretty clearly because the og looks like military clothing. Since the TCG has a much more worldwide release, having characters have military clothing of various colours could end up having unintentional connotations and resemblances.

I think I can understand the censorship from them. In retrospect, the colors of the outfits(OCG) are very similar to those of military outfits from the World Wars.

Exosister has a lot of detailed similar to Assault Lily tho, also the Lilys usually wear dark uniform too

I actually like the tcg version better. It had a little bit more personality and distinction between each exosister. The white stripes also add a more "priest-y" vibe to them which I find appropriate for their theme imo
