After the 2016 reboot of Ghostbusters didn’t play well with fans, Sony didn’t waste much time before trying to relaunch the franchise once again to bring the fans something they’d be a little more satisfied with (and make some sweet sweet money.) The result is Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which sees Jason Reitman (son of the original’s director Ivan Reitman) take the helm and bust some ghosts.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife definitely raises some questions though. Like why does everyone go about their lives after witnessing several ghosts fly right by their faces? How was the Statue of Libery walking down the streets of New York not a bigger deal, historically speaking? What’s Finn Wolfhard doing here? Why are those mini Stay Pufts alive and cooking themselves alive inside a Wal-Mart?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the Pitch Meeting that led to Ghostbusters: Afterlife! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

To be fair, the original Ghostbusters sequel established that people in this universe have an enormous capacity to forget things. Honestly, it's a miracle the Paul Rudd character remembers the Ghostbusters. They must've done his birthday party or something.

2:44 “you know what? I will get off it” truly one of Ryan’s performances of all time
Well, I finally got to see the movie, and now I finally got to watch this Pitch Meeting! Yay!
I liked the movie a lot, and felt it was a great tribute to the original (and to Harold Ramis). Not as much comedy as I'd expected, but otherwise a very enjoyable movie. Much, much better than that reboot which attempted to be funny but failed miserably.
Glad we got to see your arc conclude, sir. (^_^)
I thought the movie *stunk*. Less than Ghostbuster 2016, obviously. My take is; there was nothing creative going on; the characters' motivations were adolescent regardless of whether the character was an adolescent or an adult; there was no meaningful menace from Zuul, to the extent Zuul was 'captured' (Zuul isn't a ghost); the only Ghostbusters element that wasn't dusted off and shambled around like a grotesque marionette was Walter Peck.
And yet it was still better than Ghostbusters 2016.
The trick of the first two movies that the 2016 one missed was that they aren't centered around being comedies, they're written as serious movies about ghosts with a little horror, then they have a couple one liners inside of them.
I actually liked the 2016 movie
"Not as much comedy as I'd expected" I just watched it also(finally!) There was a perfect amount of seriousness and comedy I thought. too many movies today **COUGH AVENGERS COUGH** try and shoehorn in too much corny stuff and it breaks up the movie arc. I grew up an 80s kid watching Ghostbusters whenever I could find it on TV. I went as a Ghostbuster for Halloween in 1989 hitting everyone dressed as a ghost or scary creature with my foam proton pack beam. I had the action figures, Ecto 1, comic books, VHS, DVDs, eventually getting the blu-ray of them. I watched both The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters and the crossover episode 'Back in the Saddle' always makes me feel like a child again. I will always be forever grateful to those amazing actors and voice actors and Ivan Reitman for helping shape my childhood all the way to now.
This movie was a fantastic sendoff to both Ivan and Harold and the proper ending for the guys and a new beginning for a new era.
There was no Ghostbusters 2016 and I'm gonna need you to get way up off my back about it.
It's hilariously ironic that Phoebe, who claims that she's not funny, is the funniest character in the movie!
Even more ironic when the characters of the 2016 movie had to constantly wink at the camera constantly almost to reassure the audience that what they 'funny'. ;)
True! Her wit is on another level🤣
That's because McKenna Grace is a talented actress. And yeah Phoebe was my favorite.
@@patfer1189 True that! Just got back from it myself and have to agree. I wasn't aware of the... merchandising... but overall, the send-off was tasteful, and I don't care that the ending was a retread of GB1, it was well done, everyone got involved, and a lot of little hints earlier in the movie paid off gloriously. (I didn't notice until just before writing this, but Ray says Egon took all the traps when he left... and we know what he did with them.)
"And these cute little Stay Puft marshmallows come to life. And they start attacking him."
"Wow wow wow."
"And they all do a bunch of wacky stuff around this Walmart. They start murdering each other and committing suicide."
"What?"
"Yeah, there's an impaled marshsmallow that is just having a great time. One wants to become a s'more, so they melt some chocolate on him, and one gets blended in the most horrifying way!"
"What is going on here?"
"Yeah, it's all pretty adorable. But audience members will visibly flinch when the marshmallow fluff splatters everywhere in the blender."
"Because the blended marshmallow was sentient?"
"Because it was sentient, that's right."
@Mahroo Mizani Shhh.. If you write exactly what Ryan says in the Pitch Meeting, idiots give you likes.
I have to admit, watching that part in the theaters gave me uncomfortable flashbacks to the "sentient cupcakes" scene in Young Sherlock Holmes. As a kid I was cool with the murderous thugees and evil plotters, but the 'comedy' scene of pastries come to life and force-feeding themselves to one of the protagonists in an elaborate suicide play gave me nightmares for weeks. When I saw the CGI Egon Spengler, I wasn't sure how people would react, because I felt like the movie paid him his tributes and did his CGI part just fine, but it's always a bad idea to mess with the deceased.
Messing with the deceased is the entire meta of ghostbusters
Animating Tony's mother in the Sopranos was the first to do this that I remember. It worked, although it looked a little creepy. So many of her lines worked well in conversation. "I don't know what you're TALKING about!". They had her in a few episodes and killed off her character.
But then Lenny Briscoe in that Law & Order spinoff did not work at all. The lighting was too different.
I saw what they were trying to do and I could feel the heart on its sleeve but it didn't work for me.
I kept thinking force ghost the whole time and I thought from the opening that it was the only way they could end it with the o.g. cast coming back. I appreciated it in concept but yeah, didn't work for me.
The entire point of this sketch is that there is no way to do this tastefully. Any way you slice it, it is exploitative digital necromancy.
Which is why "Last Night in Soho" warns us about messing too much with nostalgia. IT. DOES. NOT. DO. ANY. GOOD. Edgar Wright basically outsmart Jason Reitman in filmmaking. Edgar would easily win in a "Scott Pilgrim"-esque fight.

-“Great, one character will hand a crunch bar to another early in the movie and say they’ve earned it, then later in the movie a ghostbuster will use a Twinkie to illustrate the amount of ghost energy in New York”.
In the original, crossing the streams led to a near cataclysmic event. In this one, it’s super easy, barely an inconvenience.
Dropping new pitch meetings more often than usual is TIGHT!
yeah yeah yeah
My fan theory is that Gozer remembered the form of this dimensions destructor is in the form of Stay Puft Marshmellow man. So when he's about to return again, some of his powers leaked and the First objects to be affected are the marshmallows.
You can rationalize lazy writing that feeds off nostalgia rather than being creative all you want, whatever floats your boat
I really like this theory but it makes it better that the tiny marshmallows caused more mayhem than the giant marshmello man
@@semilucky71 Oh mini versions of giant things causing mayhem is *tight!*
Gary's a big fan, he probably imagines little Stay Pufts every time he sees a marshmallow.
Yeah sure, why not!
Seeing pitch meetings is now part of my excitement for seeing a new movie.
Last week it was replying “alright” to the “…is tight” bit
This week it was “you know what, I will get off it” to the “off my back” bit
makes me even more excited for next weeks
Producer Guy's giddy excitement at the inclusion of Finn Wolfhard as the"crush" at 1:35 - *chef's kiss*
This is fantastic. - Greg
This is the crossover any KF fan has been looking for, thank you Papa Greg
“Super easy- barely an inconvenience!” will never get old
Was thinking the exact same thing , why the heck they were so chill about interacting with ghosts
Please make a pitch meeting for Disney's "Blank Check" and i'll get all the way off your back about it! 🤣
Oh yes, please, I'd really love to see Ryan's reactions!
He has to do it now
That and the upcoming Disney+ shitpile Sneakerella!
2:40 also THE TITANIC came into port! Can't forget about that
Genuinely, the thing I hate the most about all these reboots 20 something years later is any happy ending a character is given has to be undone because apparently they need to manufacture some drama and making everyone miserable is just easier.
Oh my goodness. The tastefully/tribute portion was genius. 💛💛💛💛
A cameo Ex-Machina, loved that line, Ryan you have a,way with words!
It’s currently over 2 AM in my country and I was just waiting for a new Pitch Meeting video before sleeping... Because watching a Pitch Meeting before sleep is TIGHT!
This video is pure gold. My god am I ever sick of reboots, though.
His all the way off my back variation caught me, it was great. I also like how Producer Guy and Screenwriter Guy cringe at the others' gaping flaw more noticeably now, like it's gone on so long they don't even bother holding it in anymore
I saw the movie tonight, same day as this pitch meeting. I knew Egon’s ghost would be in the movie but didn’t know they were selling his toy until now. That scene was ok when it shows Egon guiding Fibi’s hand. Then he stands besides the rest of the Ghostbusters which looked alright. It was when he starts hugging people that it started to feel too long and made me ask if Harold Ramis would even want that.
Considering egon sacrifice everything to try and save the world I think hugging his daughter is a good ending
