Eighty loosey lefty tighty, I've been a machinist for years, and it still takes me a couple takes to spit it out in reverse like that.

C-22 owner here, The turnbuckle T-bolts get bent usually when raising the mast if the shroud turnbuckles aren't facing the stern. They jam as the mast is coming up or going down. Another thing I can suggest is to put an old water bottle lid on your deck plug for the mast lights when your boat is in storage. Otherwise water can get inside and corrode the wiring. Not such an easy fix tracing wires and such.

Thanks for showing the process of getting your *Mast* up!
I'm glad 🍏 Apple 🍎 was there to help you with *IT* Rob!
Hopefully this will be something that can be accomplished as a solo sailor.

I strongly suggest a cap for the foot of your mast, makes it much stronger pivot point and prevents distortion of the mast profile.

    Ahoy Apple & Rob!
I'm Thankful you made a video about setting up your mast.
    I've been contemplating getting a Catalina 22.
Your video showing the bent hardware for securing the mast, as well as the size of the bolt going into the base of the mast, & a glimpse of the gauge of the mast, gave me pause for concern.
I understand this is a small sailboat, but even small jaunts up & down the Pacific, from bay-to-bay, seem like trips, that could potentially become beyond the little boat's capabilities.
My search for the right boat, should probably be expanded to more stoutly built models.
I need to try & keep the
boat/trailer combo's weight down, but I need to stay mindful of a boat's fragility-factor too.
Seeing your video was possibly *HUGE* in my tiny little life.
    Thanks again folks.
    🙏🦉

Thanks for the demo on stepping the mast. I had assumed that a gin pole would be required. Nice to see that it's not.

That just happened to me this last time I went out in my Capri 18. The Left Handed T bolt that is the part of the turnbuckle that attaches to the starboard chainplate got bent. What happened was that during the stepping process it was not facing forward (it was a little crooked). My partner who was winching it up forced it the last few degrees and the force of the winching bent it. I got a new one from Catalina Direct. Lesson learned: shake out your shrouds before the last little bit of stepping to make sure they are straight.

Well done for a first try. It appears that the mast hole for the pivot pin is torn out. Is that correct? I sailed mine that way for a year before I fixed it. Seemed to work even in 20+ knot winds.

Good video, I'm wondering, is there a reason you didn't use the existing winch which pulls the boat up onto the trailer? I was thinking of trying that.

Always hook up the aft and side shords before you raise the mask

Hi Rob, Were you able to keep the cable from sliding across any part of the boat ? Interesting system ! Thanks for posting .

    • @AppleRob
      @AppleRob  Před 5 lety

It only touches the tip of the bow when the lift cable first gets tension, then it lifts away and is not a problem.

hey, just the video i needed. what is your yoke pipe made of and is there a roller on the yoke? I going to try an electric winch my next mast raising. those T-blots are most likey bent during the mast raising. my mast has one shroud per side and still hard/easy to loose track of them and easy to bend, A must in the back up parts box. good stuff.

I have a 14 foot fiberglass sail boat with Clinker body style. It has no internal seating so you sit on the sides. Each side has a sealed compartment about 10L'x12"Tx10"W and has a 6" hole in each side for popout access. It has a slip in keel and a rudder system that has a long handle . The 20' mast sits in front of the keel on the floor and has two booms. I have only one sail. Dont know if its the main or the front. The keel and rudder were rotten and were incomplete when obtaining the boat. The bow area has a wave breaker. The space under the bow is about 4 foot and enough to store a small cooler and clothing, life vests and other. The aft area does have a place to hold about a 3hp motor. Looks like a hold with no drain. Nothing to support more than a 3hp or trolling motor. It has an internal aft space area for the fuel tank or battery. Does anyone know what type of sail boat this is? No serial number, the top was pop riveted to the bottom. Anti skid surfaces on the sitting area. I would like to get a name for the boat. I am going to restore it the best I can. Add new hardware all around and the first is the trailer has collapsed leaf springs so that is first. I would put a photo here but cant. Thanks

That's what I call a soft bend... A 2x4 and hard rubber mallet will fix that like new... Only use a hard bend in a emergency "45 deg under 3/4" radius " if you plan on keeping long term you may want to change out all rigging to new SS fitting and wire's... Happy sailing....

I have a Balboa 22 without that nifty thing at the back of your boat holding your mast.
Next time, seat/step the mast before you raise it on your stepper. That added angle before you seat it adds difficulty.

    • @daveopincarne3718

With the mast in the tabernacle, the midpoint of the mast is at the crutch. It's too heavy to lift the mast and fool with the crutch. Best to do it the way it was shown, lift one end then slide the mast back. That's what the roller is for.
