Shrek (2001) was inspired by a book! SHREK! was published in 1990 by William Steig and is an absolutely delightful read that I cannot recommend enough. Let's explore the book, and a little bit of the process required to turn that book into the franchise we all know and love.

fun fact: Lord Farquad’s appearance was (allegedly) based on Michael Eisner, the CEO of Disney at the time and Jeffrey Katzenberg’s former boss. They had a lot of beef and this was supposedly Katzenberg’s way of getting back at Eisner.

shrek (2001) is such an important movie in so many ways. it revolutionized animation. it was put in the library of congress in 2020 for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant". and it made smash mouth a household name. what more could you want?
Your spirited interpretation of the book's title reminds me of the way Freddie Mercury sings "FLASH!!" in Queen's Flash Gordon film theme song: "duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh SHREK!! AH AAAHHH!! Gonna scare every one of us!!"

When you asked about the witch and why they didn’t add her into the movie, I think they did, just maybe as the fairy god mother in the second movie, seeing that her job in the second movie was to fortune tell and give people their “happily ever after”, which she technically did for Shrek in the book

It's a bit crazy how we've gone from studios recasting and rewriting characters out of respect (when their actor's work is 80-90% done) to studios shamelessly putting deepfakes of late actors into their films for "hype."

i’m sure someone mentioned it somewhere but the word shrek means like fear or scare basically in german and it’s important to me that everyone knows his name basically just means “ah! scary!”

I read SO MANY William Steig books as a kid. Sylvester and the Magic Pebble and Doctor De Soto were the two standouts. Somehow though, never read Shrek!

if you are purchasing a copy of this 30 year old children's book might i reccomend The Big Boy? i grew up with a big ol book of 'THE ONE AND ONLY SHREK! plus 5 other stories by WILLIAM STEIG' and honestly they are all delightful i love mr steig he wrote quite a bit of my childhood.
