The article was written specifically to skirt defamation law; it's full of implication and leading juxtaposition without making any concrete statements that are defamatory. Had team Amber limited their defense to poking holes in the defamation claim I think they would have stood a much better chance at winning the court case. Heard might still win on technicalities around defamation, but she hurt her own argument immensely by explicitly testifying to domestic abuse, because now she can't play silly semantic games around what she said in the article.
@@AliRadicali Well team Depp now has a path for asserting Heard committed her own instance of defamation by retweeting the link with implied authorship, a notion consistent with statements during cross examination.
Honestly, as far as moving on with her own life under the best circumstances goes, Heard probably should've quit while she was ahead instead of spending all that time and energy getting that article published in furtherance of sticking it to Depp post-divorce. Same goes for her decision to retweet said article. Both of these events suggest she's consistently choosing retaliation over healing. The entire trial is just a culmination of her inability to let the past be the past.

Johnny Depp's mistake, in my opinion, was going after Wootten & The Sun. He should've gone after Amber & the Op-Ed from the beginning and, considering Wootten based his article on that Op-Ed and was giving his opinion based on the information in that Op-Ed (which he is fully entitled to do), had Johnny disproved the Op-Ed in a US court he would never have even needed to go after Dan Wootten & The Sun. I feel bad for Johnny in that respect because he was so poorly advised. There was no way he was going to win that UK trial, whether you believed him or not. Forget the fact the Judge seemed to actually believe Amber somehow, the UK trial devolved into a "he said/she said" situation and you're never going to win a defamation case against a UK paper like that, especially when the article in question was based on another previous article which Johnny had allowed to go unpunished.
He can get Dan Wotton next.
