  • Lord (Chris) Patten, the last British Governor of Hong Kong, former EU Commissioner, prolific author and current Chancellor of the University of Oxford, gives his take on human rights, China and the International Order.
    About the speaker: Chris Patten has had many roles in public life, including as MP for Bath (1979-92), a Minister (1983-92), and Chairman of the Conservative Party (1990-92). From 1992-97 he was Governor of Hong Kong; and from 1998-99 Chairman of the Independent Commission on Policing in Northern Ireland. He was European Commissioner for External Affairs (1999-2004); and Chairman of the BBC Trust (2011-2014).
    His many books include ‘The Tory Case’, ‘East and West’, ‘Not Quite the Diplomat’, ‘What Next? - Surviving the 21st Century’ and ‘First Confession: A Sort of Memoir’. His latest book, ‘The Hong Kong Diaries’ was published at the end of June 2022. Chris Patten has been Chancellor of the University of Oxford since 2003.
