This was shot in and around Richmond in late 2011 while I was in film school at VCU. Some of my friends actually dropped out of classes to go work as production assistants on it. A few actors with bit parts in the film wound up in our summer productions the next year so it was fun spotting them in Lincoln when it came out in theaters.

The actor at the beginning who recites the Gettysburg Address to Lincoln as he walks away, David Oyelowo, played Martin Luther King, Jr. a few years later In "Selma."
The last witness to the assassination (aged 5!) did not die until 1956 and a few weeks before his death he actually appeared on the game show "I've got a secret"!🎩

I saw this film in the theater. It was a good experience. Lincoln was very successful at the Box Office. It grossed nearly $200 million dollars. And it should've won the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director. Great reaction! 👍🏿

"I wish our country could go back to some semblance of treating each other with care and kindness.’ Unfortunately that’s never been our country. The idea that back in the 50’s or 1800’s people were "better" to each other isn’t reality. A vote against improving the lives of a minority class is still a no, whether it comes with a smile or a scowl. The mean parts are just said out loud more often now. Thanks for the reaction. This has been my favorite movie for over a decade.
I loved what you had to say at the end. I hope everyone who watched this reaction watched it in its entirety. Whether you associate yourself as R or D, what really matters is I. I am currently 54 years old. In 1980 my fifth grade teacher gave us the assignment of doing an oral report on who we would vote for President, Ronald Reagan (R) or Jimmy Carter (D). I shocked her when I came back with a report on John Anderson (I). No one should follow the beliefs of a political party blindly. Do the research. Formulate your own opinion based on knowledge of the individual (I) situation, instead of following political agendas based on the letter next to someone’s name. Think for yourself, as some Congressmen did in this movie. Be yourself as only you know what you believe. Be an I.
I loved Sally Field's performance in this film. She's such a versatile actress. If you're interested in seeing some of her best work, I highly recommend Norma Rae (1979), and Places in the Heart (1984). She won Oscars for both of these films.
I like her... I really, really like her.

Doris' book is great!
What I love about this movie is it captures the character of Abraham Lincoln perfectly. He really did have a funny way of walking, a high-pitched voice for a man, liked to tell stories to lighten the mood, would ask how he could help you, and was very forgiving. He had a very endearing personality. That was the man killed by John Wilkes Boothe.

Why is it hard? We finally have some people who are pushing out the RINOs and taking the party back to its conservative, populist roots. I was a Republican but left the party after the way they treated Trump. If the party can not screw up when he gets back in and actually help him get his agenda passed, unlike last time, I may return to the Republican party. Don't apologize because we have someone who actually fights for a change.
Time has proven that Lincoln was one of, if not the best presidents. But we will never know what the nation would be like had he lived. We do know that because he died when he did, there are a lot of Americans who are trying to fight the civil war still.

Daniel Day Lewis is one of the greatest actors of all time.
Seems he takes 5-10 year breaks between major films, which is a shame.
He announced his retirement from acting a while back. But as they say, "If it's a good script...", you never know.
Bravo, sir, for your sincere comments at a moment when it feels like our democracy is facing a truly existential threat; as Lincoln said, if American democracy dies, it will not be by foreign invasion, but by suicide. And democracies do die, it can happen here as easily as in Weimar Germany. We thought we defeated fascism, but it was just sleeping. This movie is such a powerful reminder of the power of every voice and each vote, and the sacred duty that comes with it.
Great movie and great movie choice to react to. Lewis was great as always. I heard he had major concerns about playing such an iconic real life person in fear of not doing the role justice. As would any actor. Very proud to see him do superbly.

I have never seen a reaction channel cover this film; awesome!! Kudos to your patrons! I saw this in the theater. I rarely go to the movie theater, but felt this one would be special (which it is.) David Strathairn, who plays the Secretary of State, stars with George Clooney in a brilliant film, "Good Night, and Good Luck" another historical film, which I highly recommend.
God, the language is just beautiful. Love the dedication to hairstyles, clothes, etc of the period. Makes you feel like you're going back in time for real.

A burden that USA carries is that it started with SUCH high goals and took so long to achieve them. Hence Lincoln having to point out that “Four score and seven years ago” the Forefathers wanted to do a land of liberty, and Dr MLK has to point out “One hundred years ago” Lincoln did what the executive branch could to give freedom to all Americans. Those people were non-violent and super patient.

I watched Spielberg give a speech for the release of this movie on the anniversary of the Gettysburg Address in Gettysburg. It was quite a moment to be in.

I rewatched this movie just last week...as part of a family movie nite...so many amazing performances, and a true classic.
Spielberg hits one out of the park again. 34:55 We all know what happened on 1-31-1865, but the tension here is still real. Like the Apollo 13 movie...we know how that event ended, but watching the movie again, you're still on the edge of your seat.
I recall that you're a reader. Have you read a very interesting book called Soldiering authored by a Union soldier named Rice Bull? It's about his experiences fighting in the Civil War. Riding the train from his home town, laying in the mud for days with a bullet in his jaw after the battle of Chancellorsville, etc. Very fascinating first hand account of being in the Civil War, if that sort of thing is interesting to you. A modern masterpiece. Though not directly about the US Civil War, it does take place during the Civil War, which plays a minor role, but is mostly about the civil war between nativists and Irish immigrants.
Daniel Day Lewis is known for having an unlimited range of acting abilities. An early film of his for which he was highly praised is called My Left Foot, based on a true story of an Irish man with CP. Daniel Day Lewis won the Best Actor Oscar for it. It also won for Best Actress, and was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Writing.

I'm so glad that you recognized the level of quality that this film has - as far as I'm concerned, every aspect of the film rises to the level of genius.
If I remember correctly Day-Lewis is about the same height as Lincoln and Field is about the same height as Mary Todd, so that was cool. Day-Lewis took a whole year to prepare for this part, reading many books about Lincoln and doing research.
A wonderful depiction. Awesome acting.
Interesting fact: Thaddeus Stevens really did take the official bill home with him (although it’s still not known for sure whether he was in a relationship with his housekeeper) and the original bill still has a big crease through it.

Another detail the movie captured is Lincoln's voice was described as surprisingly "high and reedy". Daniel Day-Lewis got it as close to dead on as it can be.

Check out Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. It sounds like a ridiculous premise but is actually a very, very good movie.
Wish I'd thought to suggest it earlier but a great movie for Black History month would be A Soldier's Story. WWII murder mystery set on an army base in Louisiana. Great cast - one of Denzel Washington's first films. ❤
Interesting fact: The assault on Fort Fisher/Wilmington was the largest seaborne invasion the US tried till WWII and it was the largest artillery bombardment in history till WWI.
Leaving aside whether one thinks that Lincoln was right or correct in pursuing the war, and leaving aside the fact that the film skips over or covers up many of his very dark & illegal actions, I have to say that this is one of the best acted and highest quality period piece films I've ever watched. Too bad it can be identified as a propaganda film once you've read a bit more history.
Daniel Day-Lewis turns into a completely different person in every role he plays. My favorite movie he's in is "Gangs of New York", but it might be tied with this one. Many will recommend "There Will Be Blood." It's good, too. All his movies are good... I think I'll rewatch "My Left Foot"...
Daniel Day-Lewis is one of a handful of brilliant actors who disappears into the roles they play. Muh of the time you don't recognize the actor, you only see the character. DDL usually starts by finding the voice of the character, which is unique only to that character. I suggest watching him in other roles- My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, and Gangs of New York to start.

Although this is the opinion of an arm-chair historian from Australia I have read extensively US history and especially the Civil War, as my father came from Indiana (his family would have been Unionists).

I'm with you. I'm a longtime D and I MISS the old Republican party. I'm not too crazy with the democrats these days. I wish we could go back to when we could argue without demonizing each other and still find common ground. My mother was from Chariton, Iowa. Her family were farmers too. And my father graduated from the University of Iowa. Go Hawkeyes!
Lincoln was nominated for 12 Oscars, and won 2. Of course Spielberg was nominated for best director, but naturally, snubbed. The movie was for best picture, but lost.

I still believe in a lot of republican principles, I just believe Democratic policies achieve them in a better, more inclusive way. Regarding the actual Abraham Lincoln, you are the correct; he was 6'4" tall. His wife, Mary, was 5'2" tall. American Civil War 1861-1865.
After four decades, I left the Republican party in July 2020. I've been unaffiliated ever since. The party has become a cult of personality...the personality of one deeply flawed man, and I find it intolerable.
One party careens ever farther to the right, and the other to the left. This nation now stands at the edge of a precipice, or an unfathomable chasm.
Every president has been flawed. This "cult" business was never a problem when teachers in schools literally had children singing songs praising Obama. Now, just because people support Trump, suddenly it's a "cult" to support a politician. Come on!
As to your closing statements for better or for worse I'm a man without a party myself because neither party these days would be welcoming of my own personal morality. Disqualified from the Republicans because while I believe abortion is wrong I don't believe in imposing my morality on others via the force of law and disqualified from the Democrats because I have issues with both the entitlement system and immigration policy (I would like strong borders with a generous, ORDERLY, immigration system without amnesty for those who have already broken our immigration laws). Those are the hot button ones anyway but other various issues disqualify me from either. I'm probably done voting for anything beyond the local and maybe state level.
I agree with some you statements and I feel your reluctantly to vote nationally but also consider your vote has immense power. You're important and so is your vote.
Without knowing what specific issues you take with the “entitlement system,” I will simply say it has lifted many, many out of poverty who were otherwise previously lost, forgotten, and neglected in our society, namely the elderly and children. I believe in Chris Christie’s definition of supporting life, that is extends well beyond the womb. All life, not just the unborn…or in Alabama’s case, every embryo. They’ve brought the Monty Python satirical skit “Every Sperm is Precious” to reality.
Any system…any system anywhere…is imperfect and has flaws. That’s just the way the world works. It’s about trying to achieve the best results for the most people.
I’m with you on immigration. The recent immigration bill negotiated over the last four months between Biden and one of biggest conservative border hawks, who had also previously been praised by trump as being tough on the border, (R) James Lankford of Oklahoma, which was first requested by republicans in October then ultimately rejected by republicans playing election year games, proposed exactly everything for which you are asking. 🤷🏻♂️ It didn’t even have a path to citizenship for DACA and Dreamers. Progressives hated it. Generally speaking, in any arena, but especially politics, if your opponent hates a proposal, you should probably jump on it.

Natives were always gonna be enemies of “Americans” because King George drew that line that blocked further western movements for the colonists.
Black people being slaves is a different problem in my view because they should have been free in the “land of the free” but aren’t (Reminds me of JQAdams’s speech in “Amistad” about slavery is making a mockery of the oh so saintly Declaration Of Independence), it’s a different hypocrisy than the Natives problem because you can’t pull the “Natives are basically hostile nations” card.

In high school they used to call my best friend “Mr President,” and me “VP.” I’ve been following politics and government at a policy level for my entire life.
