      The fire was in the back bedroom but it wasn't too hot in there since the fire seemed to vent right out of the windows. Straights shot from the standpipe to the bedroom door!

      was the quick knockdown do in part to the presence of a fire suppression system and/or standpipe. FDNY always does good work though. Cheers!

      Not until Local Law 10 of 1999 which was enacted as a result of the so called McCaulay Culkin fire that occurred on December 23, 1998 which tragically resulted in 4 civilian fatalities. As far as I can recall, the law pertains to new construction and is not retroactive except that certain buildings need to comply if they undergo what the DOB classifies as a Major Alteration.
      BTW, the original WTC was built without sprinklers. But as a result of the passage of Local Law 5 of 1973 (which pertained to certain high rise Office Buildings) they were eventually retrofitted. That law was still being challenged in court in 1975, but the city eventually prevailed. The Fire Commissioner at the time was John T. O'Hagan and he pushed for the changes.

    Is there a reason they don't use the NATO phonetic alphabet? Boy for B and was it Willy for w? Surely Bravo and Whiskey is better and universal.

    • @rcor87
      @rcor87 Před 5 dny

      Police and fire phonetic alphabet is different from that of the military / NATO

    • @saramae9878
      @saramae9878 Před 4 dny +1

      @@rcor87 Do you know why? Always struck me as odd, especially given how many veterans go on to join police/fire. Even civilians tend to know NATO, willy for w is ridiculous lol

    • @rcor87
      @rcor87 Před 4 dny +2

      @saramae9878 police and fire phonetic alphabet is much older than NATO. Maybe they didn't want to change it? though I'm not sure. And W is actually William, not Willy. Maybe they were just shortening it. For example, E is Edward and C is Charles, but you'll most often hear Eddie and Charlie used instead.

    • @saramae9878
      @saramae9878 Před 4 dny +1

      @@rcor87 I didn't realize it was older, thanks for that info. Make sense they wouldn't bother changing it if it works for them.

    • @rcor87
      @rcor87 Před 4 dny +2

      @saramae9878 you're welcome. Some departments do in fact use NATO alphabet, its just not as common. And there are slight variations on the police / fire phonetics across the country. One that comes to mind is Y. Some use Young and some use Yellow.

      Yes, because there is very little difference between somebody arranging the repair of some potholes and somebody that goes into a fire to rescue complete strangers. It’s basically the same job.
