    It was just over two centuries ago that the global population was 1 billion - in 1804. But better medicine and improved agriculture resulted in higher life expectancy for children, dramatically increasing the world population, especially in the West.
    As higher standards of living and better health care are reaching more parts of the world, the rates of fertility - and population growth - have started to slow down, though the population will continue to grow for the foreseeable future.
    U.N. forecasts suggest the world population could hit a peak of 10.1 billion by 2100 before beginning to decline. But exact numbers are hard to come by - just small variations in fertility rates could mean a population of 15 billion by the end of the century.

    A glass is actually a very good metaphor for population capacity. The capacity of the glass(population capacity) keeps changing as industries develop and basic goods are more readily available, increasing the pop cap. When the water(population) exceeds the capacity of the glass, water spills out(lots of deaths). Our challenge is to increase the volume of the glass in a sustainable way.

    • @yosefmacgruber1920
      @yosefmacgruber1920 Před 2 lety +2

      Well I like the analogy also, however, I very much dislike how misleading that perhaps it was meant to be. Most any analogy has its limitations, for example, as a pro-lifer, I would rather that the "population bathtub" be naturally overflowing over its side and the water flowing all over the floor and down the steps. Because why-ever should human populations be limited to some tiny little area of the planet? So you can see then how that analogy is already failing and isn't entirely even relevant.
      Bigger drinking glasses is the obvious fix, but then the demonstration would seem less dramatic? Well maybe it ought to be less dramatic. Well at least they didn't overflow the glasses, but still committed that statistical sin, by implying that they could be about to overflow. Population alarmist liars, love "overflowing" graphs, because they oppose their fellow human beings, following their father the devil, the father of disrespect and lies. Yet any decent statistician knows that an overflowing graph merely means that it wasn't scaled properly.

      What is so great about it? Birth control is unnatural, awkward, and aims to prevent human life. Many people won't use "artificial" methods due to the awful side-effects, or due to religious reasons. Until a half-century ago, birth control was hardly even heard of, and people pretty much let babies happen as they happen.
      Imagine no religion? Does that include getting rid of the false religion of evolution/atheism? What then does that leave? Emptiness? Nothingness? Do people not believe in anything anymore? How sad. What then, do they live for?
      Do I see the twin towers in your profile images? Sorry, but it seems we can't blame that upon the violent and intolerant Muslims, who seem to be a handy scapegoat these days, if 9-11 was actually an inside job. The government/media story makes no sense. The conspiracy theories explain what happened, better. Check out the book, by Dr. Judy Wood, Where Did The Towers Go? It has some interesting stuff, and a lot of photos.

The science has nothing to say, towards any supposed "need" to limit births. Evolution theory has never been proven. Climate change used to be global warming, used to be coming-ice-age. The theory keeps ever changing, so it has never been proven. Overpopulation theory has never been proven. I know enough science, to know when wicked anti-freedom NWO elitists are inserting stupid political opinions, under the guise of science, and thus mocking science by their crafty deceptions. I love science, so I will call them out on that, when I catch them doing it.

      You should wonder what happened the last time population masses moved in unison to other inhabited areas for sustainable environments.
      There will be war for water, energy and food in the distant future.This is the mathematical inevitability of having uncontrolled population booms. Rabbits start dying out after they overbreed, since some of them cannot find food. They're also hunted by predators.

    The world become a truly inhospitable place if there was 15 billion people on this planet. We are fucked if the population grows to 15 billion because even at "only" 7.25 billion, the planet's biosphere is completely collapsing. With twice as many people, the planet's life support systems will completely collapse. And we might end up living on a barren desolate planet.
    Unless mankind realizes that infinite growth in consumption and population is impossible on a finite planet, there can never be true happiness. We have been pursing infinite growth in population and consumption for far too long. End the infinite growth paradigm if we are to survive as a species.

      you are right. The world will never even have 15 billion people because we will not be able to produce enough food to feed 15 billion people. We are already having a hard time producing enough food for 7 billion people, so what makes you think we will have enough food for 15 billion people? We will never be able to produce enough food to feed 15 billion people because the world has already ran out of arable land. We are at peak arable land. And we can't improve food production per acre of land either. That has also been maxed out. The world population might be able to grow to 10 billion, but that's about it.

      AmandaNerdBot Worthy thoughts, but population and consumption are different cases. Most people consume very little, a minority consume lots. And the people whose numbers are increasing tend to consume least, as will their children. Population won't hit 15 billion: births are about to start coming down while we've ever more elderly reaching the end of their time. World population's taking care of itself though it'll take time, but consumption by the better-off among us will spell disaster if we don't rein it in or shift rapidly from material to other pursuits.

      Why do you think that God will give everybody 6 children?
      But many large families were not originally planned that way. What often happens I think, is that they just had their 4th child, and still haven't gotten around to choosing a "satisfactory" method of birth control. They may not even realize that their family is starting to get really large. And by the time they have a large family, it is too late, and they find that they have gotten used to large family life, and seem to like it.

      Only 17%? 4%? That is obviously false. Modern technologies such as air-conditioning and ocean water desalination, make it very possible, if people so choose, to live and thrive even in the deserts. Israel is proof that barren wastelands can be transformed.
      It is Malthusian people-hating, and backwards paganism, that needs to change. The evolution theory has seriously corrupted society, and encouraged people to do bad things. And don't we both know, the religions will never change, well except that truth will eventually overtake the lies.
      It is the loving and kind people, who are more easily persuaded to have more children, so it is one of those things that works out on its own. Somebody has fed you a bunch of pagan propaganda that has confused your mind.

      How are you so unaware of the ridiculous "overpopulation" theories? The more old-school thinking was that humans perhaps solve problems too well, and so an old textbook of mine claimed that "at the current rate, we might soon all reach standing room only conditions". Well if that is all that we had to worry about, why even bother to worry? It is not going to happen anytime within our expected lifespans, nor that of our children.
      Actually, advancing technologies should reduce the cost of most everything, including that of raising children. But the expectations go up, and now suddenly all children need their own smart-phones and computers? Not long ago at all, a family could share such things.
      Do you not realize that huge numbers of people have objections to birth control? So hadn't we plan to grow at least somewhat human-denser worldwide?

      The populatoin growth rate has been decreasing for several decades now. At this rate within a century population will be declining globally. Except africa. Which will have more people than all of asia including india and china and the rest combined.

    • @aram8495
      @aram8495 Před 5 lety +2

      There is a reason the human population will plateau at 10 billion. Factors such as a limited resource capacity on earth such as food, water, and shelter which are necessities to survive will eventually start killing humans from starvation, dehydration, and exposure to the elements. That, as well as other factors such as lowering fertility rates, diseases, and natural disasters, will slow the human population growth rate and even reducing the total population. This plateau is called the carrying capacity. Where there are not enough resources to sustain a population above a certain amount. This population growth is an example of logistic growth where the graph starts exponential, but platoes at its carrying capacity. Of course, there will be fluctuations below its carrying capacity from increases in death from outside sources; starvation, disease, disaster, etc. As well as fluctuations that increase the population from increased resource capacities, new medical technologies, etc. However, those fluctuations are only temporary. Unless we find some magical solution to our ever-growing problems or we venture out into space, the carrying capacity is stuck and won't easily budge. At ten billion, or whatever the carrying capacity may be, the death rate will be around the same as the birth rate and the growth of the human population will all slow to little, temporary fluctuations. Take this from a well-educated person to believe. This is our future.

  • @rawkout
    @rawkout Před 9 lety +7

    I'm going to offer another solution to the question.
    The answer isn't directly medical advancements or food production, the real answer lies a bit deeper: oil. At the turn of the 20th century our population exploded from 1.6 billion to as we know it now, 7 billion. Economically, everything revolves around oil, including better medicine and agriculture. And just as the worlds population exploded with the production and refining of oil, so it will fall at the same rate once we hit peak oil.

    • @MichaelMantion
      @MichaelMantion Před 9 lety

      The interesting thing is there will always be plenty of oil, We produce as much as people are willing to pay for. Sure cost pre barrel goes up but technological advances make greater production possible. Most industrial nations women average less that 2 kids. Its the under developed world that is driving population growth.

    • @SplogMan
      @SplogMan Před 9 lety +1

      The documentary Collapse (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collapse_(film) talks about this (oil being the reason for population growth) very fact. Oil is the reason for the population growth.

    • @MsMikuHatsume
      @MsMikuHatsume Před 9 lety

      oil is really the main reason for the huge population growth during the 20th century. What you see as oil became ubiquitious the population goes up vertically, growing at an exponential rate.

      Our ancestors believe that (population) growth is good. I mean actually good. Quite many people still believe that. So it isn't just you. As a pro-lifer, I find it beautiful to contemplate the world population growing. It means that we many humans must at least be doing something right. Besides, babies are cute.
