Baiting Low-Altitude Fights and Reversals | Lavochkin La-7 | War Thunder Air RB

- In today's video, I'll be flying out the Lavochkin La-7, which sits at 4.7 in the USSR tech tree. This plane is extremely fun to fly, though very unconventional.
Since this plane lacks engine performance above 3200 meters, I play the La-7 by stopping my climb earlier than other fighters, and use the illusion that you are low and slow to drag people down to low altitude and use the high speeds gained from the dive to make the enemy overshoot and reverse them.
This plane gains and keeps so much energy at low altitude for a 4.7, it's almost unfair.
Today's video is a long one, but definitely worth the watch. Lots of examples of how to win fights when starting from a disadvantageous position, by baiting enemies into reversals.

I like how you explain the fights, I feel like I don't ask myself as much questions about the energy states as usual because you seem to be answering them every single time, and that's very helpful for a beginner like me (lvl 50 noob lol)

P.S. : I like japanese props, especially late ones, I recommend playing them, they're not very hard to do well in so I'm sure you will absolutely crush with them (maybe not as many carry games, as the 5.0-6.3 Japanese teams are really efficient imo)

My favorite low BR Fighter is the Yak-1, I used to hate it but now I know how to fly it its amazing
Yak-1 is amazing
It's my only fighter where I got K/D close to 3
It is a pretty straightforward plane for a beginner - you outturn everyone you can't outrun and you outrun those you can't outturn. And being at a children's BR of 2.3 it is self evident what kind of planes you won't outturn. Hint: they have two wings!
Also the armament is easy to use. A single shvak is still a meneace 2 ranks above you and the Shkas MG's are the best 7.7mm guns in the game. No weird restrictions liie on a P 39 or P-36 or the Bf109 E5.
The la7, yak9u and yak 3 are just powerhouses.
Russian bias! Also try the I225, it’s very unconventional, but a great plane.

Def one of my favs together with the yak-3p
yak-9p is good too. some say yak-3 has better specs, but the triple 20mm guns have amazing convergence and velocity so its far easier to hit enemies.
@@MacWithGunhave ypu tried the I-185 M71? They say I-225 is a poor upgrade on it.
@@DzinkyDzink I did try the M-71 a couple of weeks ago, absolute brick to fly, but at least it climbs well and is fast enough to sort of boom and zoom enemies. It’s not a bad plane, but it’s certainly not good.
I-225 is in my opinion one of the best 5.0s in the game.
I'm a 109 player and to see 109 getting destroyed during the whole video was a little heartbreaking 😅
Yeah I love 109s too! Probably my favorite airframe in war thunder, but there’s not much you can do against a half-decent la-7 pilot at low altitude 😆

the yak-3p is also a huge death machine. The last time I used it I got 5 kills and 2 assists (stolen) in a full uptier
@@kingghidorah8106 Never used the yak3p since i never found the additional guns worth the increase in br. I just really enjoy bullying the japanese and trolling the p51h players with the 3U. It's funny how many people underestimate the yak3u's performance thinking that it won't do much since it's a "jack of all trades" and in their heads it probably won't have any "special strengths" to turn the tides. Last thing they know they're dead by trying to stall it out, outclimb it, outrun it, and for some planes, dogfighting it.
@@Jbatistali i didnt really like it when I started playing it, back when shvak was THE worst gun in the entire game, but now that the guns are fine I accept it being 5.0

In my experience, when you reverse on an enemy, a lot of times, if they can put it in the ground to prevent you from getting points, they will.

The Swedish J-22s went up in BR where their flight performance is complete trash, because their 13.2mm MGs with explosive bullets hit like 20mm cannons.
Yet somehow not a single Russian plane went up in BR after their 20mm cannons, with their 100% HE-T belts, started to kill every fighter in 2-3 hits.

Had a moment where I got called out for running away on my fw 190 d9. I ket him come closer, reversed him and got him sent to the hangar xD

I’ve actually never played the I-185s before, Ive always assumed they aren’t worth it, because they’re super easy to fight and kill, but I’ll look at them later.

In my experience, I-185s are almost like soviet Fws, but their elevators are a bit stiff, so anything more maneuverable with good engines can kill them (I'm often on that business end because I'm still learning defensive flight with energy planes lol)

I played this plane for an objective, I really like this plane and I can't wait for the update where gaijin will add a Romanian aviation sub tech tree to Germany so I can fly a La-7 and Bf 109 in same line-up.
Nice vid! How does the Yak 3U compare to this beast? From the looks of your gameplay, i don’t see what justifies the Yak being 1 BR higher, is it really only the turn rate?
No, the yak3U is a much smaller, lighter plane than the la7. This makes it accelerate better, turn better, and climb WAY faster, even though the la7 already has a great climb rate.
In my opinion, the yak3U could be uptiered to 6.0 and I wouldn’t be surprised.
this is the first time I seen someone come up on top against a BF 109 Energie fight from the lower position.
See the problem here is that they both nulled their energy at some point.
Starting from scratch at the deck La-7 is probably the best at generating it. That 109 lost the moment he failed the energy trap.
Should have just stayed high above and perforned safe "pecks" instead of going full in.
109 has all the speed he needs but hes just diving straight to the ground back at him after la-7 stalls.If 109 jockeys him as hes diving he can get a shot at la-7 easily.Hes just diving like a loose bullet.You cant expect someone to pull inside when youre diving but once that person get you with it you can just adjust your speed next time.This 109 is a better pilot than most of the randoms but hes falling to same play over and over again which means hes mediocre at best.If someone turns inside of your dive and try to reversal you just get straight up as soon as they start turning and take a spiral loop and dive back at them youll still have much more energy state and they bleed more energy doenst matter if its a russian plane or not youll get a shot at them.All they can do is pitch up and headon you again which you can prefire or just energy trap again with a spiral.
Maybe the 109 should've focused on not compresssing and maintaining his position idk actually because the La-7 has good maneuverability

There is no altitude advantage vs a La-5FN/7 when you are both below 2500 meters.
There is just not enough space - it's physically impossible!
I would very much like to play with you sometime, finding guys that play props is comically hard for some reason in the main war thunder discord.
Here's a plane suggestion: Br.693 at 4.0
p51d30 and f4u4 are faster on deck than the la7 btw. The former albeit is at a higher br but the latter used to be 4.7 now 4.3. Typhoon is around the same speed too as the la7. Gotta watch out for those.
You’re right, but in terms of performance, the la-7 bullies these planes.
None of those aircraft are gonna catch the la-7 because it climbs and accelerates so much better. Also in a dogfight, the la7 wins too.
@@MacWithGun I don't know about a typhoon, it's actually quite the rate fighter. I will agree with the p51d30 tho. Dunno about the f4u4 tho. Haven't actually fought any la7s in recent memory in it.
@@ushikiii F4u4 is all around worse than the la7 below 3km (besides top speed) and you can energy fight typhoons, IF you are very careful.
Hey, why your movements so smooth? How can i improve keyboard settings? Im 80 lvl player but i cant understand more than 5 years why my plane so raggy controlled from keyboard
@@m85production idk how to really explain it, but the best way that I can put it is that I don’t try to fly my plane where it doesn’t want to go.
If I wanna turn or do a maneuver, I’ll just position my plane into the proper orientation to start and complete my maneuver rather than just throwing my plane around. Also, when I’m rolling in those scissor turns, I use roll and rudder (Q+A or E+D) at the same time for a quicker and cleaner snaproll,

this thing is a menace, I was very bad when I got it and now I decided to give a go to the la-7 with the three Berezin B20 and it punches harder and is more challenging since it's 5.0. I don't remember my KD but I think it's around 2.5 compared to 1:1 on the La-7 with two ShVAK

I use 600m and no vertical targeting, and rarely switch it.

How does it compare to the yak-3?
The la-7 is much better under 3km, being faster, climbing better, and being nearly as maneuverable as the yak3
However, once you get above 3.2km, the yak3 is slightly better in terms of performance.

Also, in my opinion the yak3p is worse at its BR, because it has the same performance of a 4.3 yak3 while having barely any better guns, at 5.0.

Is your crew fully upgraded? If i try half thoses curves my pilot faints instantly.
Expert crew is mandatory for me, and if you have enough SL, then I recommend expert crews as they are worth the money.
