    I got a puppy a week ago and even though I researched for A YEAR beforehand, I was not prepared for how exhausting he would be. Two days ago he started barking, mostly for attention I think. Like when I'm using the bathroom?? It's so hard to tell whether he genuinely needs something like go potty or is just looking for attention. I know the best thing to do is ignore him but I live in an apartment building, so the fact that a bunch of neighbors are being disturbed just adds to the stress. I'm gonna try to power through with your tips!

    Thank you for your advice and channel. Sorry for the novel here! I have owned many puppies/ dogs and took them all to professional group training classes. My new puppy starts one on Sunday Dads Day. I have a new puppy that is 13 weeks old, and I have had her only two weeks. She is a rat terrier which have a huge personality and are very active, and some say are barkers. That hasn’t been my experience. I have owned two rat terriers puppies and a jack russell puppy, all two years apart at the same time. Ok this rat terrier is definitely MORE vocal than all my other dogs combined. She barks for attention. She barks when she drops her toy and wants it to jump back up to her. she barks at me when I eat my meals, and wants my food instead of hers. She barks for me to play, non stop. She does not bark at people. She doesn’t bark at people ringing at the door. She doesn’t bark at other animals, cats ducks birds or turtles out at the ponds or woods. I walk her six times a day, even though its summer blistering heat in FL which is demanding since I work full time! I even take her to pee the 14 times a day she asks to go out by sitting in front of the door. she is not barking at frightening things, she is barking to demand something from me. 😩 I stop her by playing if I can but cant play during the 8 hours I am supposed to work even though I try. she is super smart, was potty trained on day 2 and crate trained to go on her own by day 3. We started sit, down, and drop it. She is easily trainable because she is food motivated. I live alone and work at home and thought I have the time and energy for her, but maybe was dumb idea to pick a puppy. What can I do to stop her from barking at me when I am eating. I have not had a hot meal in weeks now that she needs so much attention. I tucker her out and put her in crate while I cook my dinner but maybe she needs to stay in there until I finish eating. I imagine she had her mom and siblings to play with all day and she misses them. 😔

    I have a 3 month old labrador puppy, and I am not sure yet what the actual cause of the barking is, but everytime I have my phone in my hand and talk with someone or take a picture or video from him, after a while, he gets excited and starts to bark or "attack" the phone. I guess he needs attention or is scared of the phone. What do you think? What would be the correct behavior from my side to avoid this phenomenon?

    My 7-month old mini poodle puppy barks and whines when one of us goes upstairs (he's confined to the main floor of our house). He also barks/whines when in his ex-pen or in his car crate. He has done this since he was w to 4 months old. I interpret his barking as "attention" barking and expressing unhappiness at not being with us. We have simply ignored him, but the behavior hasn't improved much. Only recently he has started coming up to one of us and barking when he's bored. We usually take him outside to his potty area just in case.

Not sure if it’s the right diagnosis but I think it’s separation and attention issue barking. I just started to give her a treat after 3 seconds of quiet and then say quiet and praise her. I hope this works.

      @@leighaustinritter they are 1 year and 8 months now. They are just now starting to calm down. We did some professional training. We bought a 3 class package. We did the puppy training and the intermediate class then took a break because we waited to spay and neuter until they were at least a year old. We have recently been talking about how it’s time to start scheduling our advanced training classes. The female is the quiet one now and the male is vocal. We were in over our heads until the obedience training. The best advice I can share is to get some professional training. The work you put in on the front end will payout in the near future. It’s time and money well spent. Also take lots of pictures because they grow so fast and looking back at the cute puppy stuff is so nice to see and reflect how far they have come.

      This is very common. Treat this like fear barking: counter-condition by teaching your puppy that the stimuli of people near the door mean good things. It's important to work on this outside of the time that you need it.

The puppy will bark at the older dog to try and entice play (older dog generally ignores her). Barking is a form of communication between dogs. If your older dog doesn't like it, then you'll want to work with the puppy to have better manners around the older dog. We call that "neutrality" and you'll want to teach the Aussie to be more calm in the presence of other dogs.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  Před 3 lety +9

      You can treat it like fear. When dealing with fear in puppies, the best course of action is to identify the fear and work on counter conditioning techniques to help your puppy overcome their fear. This means we want to set up controlled training sessions where your pup can remain calm yet receive positive reinforcement when the trigger is present, yet at a distance or at low volumes. One great technique we use is to find a similar sound on CZcams and play it at a low volume while giving out training treats or kibble. When you start the sound the treats are delivered, when you stop the sound, the treats stop.

    Hey! Great video, but I have something to clear out. Our family got a few weeks old puppy (I don't specifically know how many weeks).
    He kept barking when we put him in a room and closes the door. At this moment, we have guests arrived in our home, so some of my family members are sleeping on the floor and he can't wander around the house freely at the night. (He usually wakes up in the middle of night). He barks so high pitched while scratching the door. I am not sure if its seperation anxiety or not, since he is separated from her mother, but it has been almost a 2 weeks since he came to us and it was totally fine few days ago. He barks more and more day to day. So when we opens the door and let him walk around or when someone plays with him or sleep him on their tigh in the room which its door is closed he stops barking. It's so hard to sleep at night these days, because of him barking T_T What do you think?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  Před 17 dny

      Once you have figured out the trigger for the barking (sounds like it's attention or food) you can get ahead of it by teaching her what you want to do instead. She might need to learn something like "go to your bed" or "sit/stay" while you're preparing the food. Teaching these things involves practicing outside of the time you need it. Until you can help her with new habits that don't involve barking we would not suggest a trip with her.

  • @gaylecook5388
    @gaylecook5388 Před 10 dny +2

    He barks because he is frustrated that he is not getting what he wants (food, treats, food that I am preparing for myself, getting out of his pen, access to chasing the cat) or he isn't getting it fast enough.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  Před 9 dny

      Try to get ahead of the behavior by offering an activity before he has to ask for it. You can also teach him manners when it comes to food, including sitting nicely on a mat or asking for food in a different way (bumping your leg, sitting on your foot, etc). Be careful you're not reinforcing the barking by looking at him or talking to him. That's why we have to try and get ahead of it so it doesn't become his habit to get your attention.

    Mm , my puppy (about a year old) barks and barks whenever we play fetch. Specifically she barks when she just retrieved the toy, ran back to me, and wants me to grab the toy to throw again.
    However when I go to grab the toy she grabs it back, and that's when she barks. If I fight for the ball though, she bites at my hands. So I let her keep the ball and bark. I want to play a fun game of fetch but how do I get the dog to 1) stop barking and 2) get her to release the toy so I can throw it again, and 3) stop biting at hands?

    Hello I came across your video because I was looking for information on how to help my 2 years old dog to stop barking at random strangers. A good month ago he start going to a dog daycare for nearly 2 weeks. Since then he barks at random people when we go for walks. Before he wasn’t a barker unless someone strange came to the house; but now when I take him out for a walk at time he barks at strangers even if he doesn’t do it all the time. I am not sure how to stop this behavior that he didn’t have before. Thank you

      Unfortunately this is a common response to doggy daycare, which can be overwhelming and promote bad manners. It's better if you find another option for him, like a pet sitter or walker dropping by if you'll be away from home for a long period. Helping him feel more comfortable with people will be done with a counter conditioning process. You can learn more about that here: czcams.com/video/mgPViZGH3sY/video.html

    my dog barks for play all the time, even after a 20-30min play session. he will also bark whenever I'm eating something (his way of begging I guess). I try to ignore the barking and then reward the quiet but my goodness he will constantly bark for about 10 mins straight sometimes more. Living in an apartment I feel so bad for my neighbors having to constantly hear my dog bark. I feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place with this one :( I'm thinking maybe training him to go into his crate during meal times might be a good step. He is also not quite old enough for walks yet since he isn't totally vaccinated yet and my complex has a ton of dogs and owners who dont pick up after them so I can't risk taking him outside untill hes fully vaccinated (only a few more weeks). I'm hoping once I can take him for walks, he will in turn calm down on the barking.

      It's really good you're thinking of this before your puppy comes home. Can you block off the sight of the dogs with some kind of fence cover? That will help. The next thing to do is to begin sound desensitization. If you do this *before* the puppy starts to react to the barking it will be easier for you. Many new puppy parents are concerned about aggression, but often it’s normal puppy behavior, which includes nipping, biting, barking, and growling. The difference between normal behavior and aggression is that the intent to harm is missing from the equation. Puppies often nip and bite at moving objects including hands, kids and pants legs. Puppies growl and bark when they want to play or in an excited mood. The context of the situation plays a huge part in determining if we have normal puppy behavior or something more serious going on.

      It's pretty normal for dogs to smell other dogs' pee, but it could be the beginning of resource guarding. It could be discomfort or fear as well. You can work on some desensitization / counter conditioning to dogs at a distance where your dog can remain calm. When he sees the dog he gets a treat. When the dog goes away, the treat goes away. That's how we change a dog's association with a scary or uncomfortable thing.

    My dog is 8 months old. He used to bark at everything as a puppy. Literally sound of door, drawers opening, any sound. From exposing him to all those things that make him bark, now he's pretty much okay with things and other dogs.
    He barks at people though, he doesn't bark at everyone. When we are walking he doesn't bark. At home he keeps barking at the same people, who work in my house. Is this bored barking?
    Also when I am driving, and the car stops (at a gas station, parking lot), he barks at anybody approaching the car.
    I am glad I have been able to cure 90% of the barking but I want to know how I can find out what causes him to bark. He also seems to bark more when I am around, so it's either fear or guarding thing.
    As a side note, I live in a majority moslem country, and they are not allowed to touch dogs. I think this is one of the reasons. Because of them avoiding him trying to sniff, he gets suspicious?

      If he is barking at people in your home it could be for a couple of reasons. 1) he is seeking attention and has recieved it in the past form others 2) could be concerned or anxious with the people (even if he's familar with them)

We have to understand the full context of the barking behavior to figure out what we can do about it. Dogs bark for a lot of different reasons and depending on the situation, it may not be as simple as teaching the dog to be quiet. Simply suppressing a behavior can result in further behavioral issues and can actually be rather dangerous, not to mention unfair to the dog. Barking to get your attention is common but definitely something you want to address as soon as you see it start. Try to predict her needs and meet them before you settle into the sofa. You can also teach her to settle on her bed at the time you're settled on the couch. Here's a video that can get you started. czcams.com/video/iqvyiCYXQvY/video.htmlsi=msBqqzRoyXq_-MSn

      That's a highly specific skill to train. We don't recommend leaving dogs tied up outside. The more he barks, the stronger this habit will be. You might need a positive reinforcement trainer to work with you.

      Ignoring the puppy doesn't teach him what you want him to do, and doesn't get to the root of the barking issue. New puppies are definitely exhausting! If you'd like some guidance, consider our online course!

    My 6 month old lab barks when other dogs come to say hi to me. Even if they are dogs he sees everyday. It seems like it's becoming more aggressive and he even lunges at them. I think it's a mixture of insecurity, overstimulation, and he is protective over me. It's a little overwhelming and difficult to work on when other dogs are involved.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  Před 3 lety +1

      You're right, what appears as aggression is actually a result of a mixture of various behaviors. To work on this, we suggest finding an animal behaviorist who uses positive reinforcement techniques to help you and your dog find a solution.

      It sounds like she thinks you might be looking for some kind of play or engagement. Most of the time humans can't say "ouch" in a way that the dog understands as "please don't" so it's best to remain silent. Barking is not something we can solve in a simple FB post or one video. We have to understand the full context of the barking behavior to figure out what we can do about it. This video is meant to help you get started and our online course can help shape the behavior to something more harmonious with your home. As part of our online course, you can learn how to better be your puppy’s “detective” and understand the behavior.
