New BMW M3 Competition 'G80' vs 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio review | Autocar

- čas přidán 6. 09. 2024
- This is the all-new BMW M3 Competition, 2021's hottest new super saloon. It packs a 3.0-litre twin turbocharged engine with oodles of power, with some 503bhp (metrically, 510hp) and some 479lb ft on tap. At the moment it's rear-wheel drive, which is all the better to use its 'M Drift Analyser' function (though there will be a 4wd version later).
But the new 2021 M3 is no lightweight, at some 1725kg, which is otherwise known as 'quite a lot' for a BMW 3-Series. But still it can get from 0-62mph in 4.2sec and go on to a 180mph top speed (with the optional M Driver's Package). The car costs from £74,755.
Here it's up against what is, in our minds, its greatest competitor, the 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. We are huge fans of the Alfa, which has no shortage of power itself, with its 2.9-litre V6 making the self same 503bhp (510hp) as the M3 but with a little less torque, of 443lb ft. But then, it has less to carry around, weighing in at 1580kg, a much more palatable figure for a compact executive saloon.
As a result the Giulia Quadrifoglio can get from 0-62mph in just 3.9sec and it has a whopping top speed of 191mph. It costs £67,995.
Which car will our testers prefer, though? Our testers Matt Prior and James Disdale head to Blyton Park circuit in the UK to find out.

I own the Giulia Ti Sport (Veloce) and it is an absolute blissful experience every time I drive her. Going on three years with not so much as a hiccup. It is a brilliant machine. Easily the best, most fun sports-sedan on the planet by a considerable margin.
Maybe the best you've driven, but not even close to being easily the best....
@@leok7193 This is true but judging a car only on specs is not very wise and it gives you only one perspective. This BMW is a great car that is certain, however for some of us Alfa has something that BMW will never have and that is why in general Giulia is such a great car, objectively and subjectively.
How many days did you sleep at the shop?
I have it too for almost an year now. I totally agree with you, but I do have one complaint and that's the turning circle. Could be better.

I've owned Ferraris and own 3 Porsches now including a 997.2 GT3. My Alfa QV is my favorite car. And it drives like a Mercedes on bad California roads whereas an M3 would cause loose fillings in my teeth. I'm at 3 years, and it still inspires me. Why they don't compare them on ROADS where they are driven 99% of the time is baffling. I don't live on a track. I live in Los Angeles, the land of potholes.
Have you tried the new M3s? I've been driving one daily for the past few weeks and it is very comfortable in comfort mode...
Why you watch stupid reviews which is all about "how I feel" and one dude obviously struggling with keeping car on the road. Go to car center and request a test drive 🤣 im not as fancy as you tho. I only own 1 Porsche and BMW X7

I believe New Orleans may hold the record for potholes on the road... Its ridiculous
I owned Bugatti and 3 Koenigsegg now including Pagani Hyura. My M3 Competition is my favorite car. And it drives like BMW......
I have owned an Alfa QV for three years now and i think its the most balanced and complete car I have ever owned or driven. Still years ahead of competition despite being 4 years old.

Very good review. Consistency instead of appearance. BMW is a great car, better interior quality and more gadgets....no discussion on that. The Alfa is more refined under the "skin" with a double wishbone suspension, rear slip differential and with a carbon-fiber propeller shaft. It is unbelivable that after 5 years this Alfa still competent and competitive on the market....what a machine!

Very nice review. The Giulia is definitely a better car in my opinion, which will become a classic, like the BMW E46. Looking at the 2 cars together in this video you immediately see the differences..The M3 is a tuned 3 series while the Giulia QV was developed from zero with the purpose of being a sport car. All vents and dams are functional. BMW clearly tried to copy some of the Giulia's aesthetic features (see the shape of the rear spoiler, the Montreal green color, the carbon bucket seats, the new bigger paddle shift)..but it was impossible to achieve top driving dynamics starting from a normal 3 series.
totally agree - ALfa QV - real car, bmw m3 - fake car :)
Ok so what you’re saying is that a standard giulia doesn’t exist and that the qv version is a besboke model that doesn’t share anything with the normal car 🤨🤨🤨 COTA YLE XoarXXar? :))
@@nikashushanashvili8100 No Nika, i am not saying this. I mean that the standard Giulia was developed after the Giulia QV, which was developed from scratch by the same engineer who worked on the 458, with the purpose of creating a proper sport car with 4 doors. So the normal Giulia is a scaled down version of the QV, but sharing the same steering, chassis, carbon fiber driveshaft and extensive use of aluminum, which makes the normal car a reference in the category for driving dynamics and weight. That said i believe that the normal BMW 3 series is a better package than the normal Giulia, because in buying a normal saloon the parameters of valuation are different, and a fancy cabin, top class infotainment, laser led lights, virtual dashboard and so on are much more important in this segment.
@@MrGiamma84 bang on! That’s also why the regular Giulia has a carbon prop shaft 👍
Except the regular 3 series has better driving dynamics than the regular giulia and the M3 has always had better handling/ driving dynamics as well as better daily capabilities than the Giulia QV

100% spot on. Alfa Romeo QF will be a future collectable, it's just THAT good even after 5 years.
I am on my 2nd Alfa and I will never go German again. The Alfa wants you to enjoy life, I don't care about the dated interior, I love that in Seattle, no one knows what it is, and people are constantly asking me about it. My friends all have Audi and BMW, and these cars are the road going equivalent of an emotionally withholding father. Very distant and cold autos.
The interior of my Ti Sport is beautiful- lovely retro gauges, a screen that blends with the dash and doesn’t look like someone wedged an iPad there, apple car play and all the other tech I need. Plus no friggin touch screen, just a nice rotary dial. If that’s what dated is, I’ll take it.
I have 1500 miles on my first Alfa, a 2021 Ti Sport with adaptive suspension and this is the best description I’ve seen of the difference between Alfa’s and the Germans. The passion of Italian cars is a well worn cliche but after driving German cars, driving an Alfa with pace immediately makes the cliche a reality. I drove a Mito QV in Mexico and it cemented my opinion that Alfa makes the best road suspensions in the world.

The alfa as a engine made by ferrari and thats enough for me (if i had the age /the money to drive it lol)

I got a GQ recently and although I’ve owned many cars and bikes, it is by far the most complete package of them all. Beauty, power but like James Bond it can put on dress clothes for the casino. It is basically a Ferrari sedan. Instant classic. I would recommend buying one before it’s too late.
I love my 2019 QV, it’s faster than my California and NA2 NSX.
really like the new M3, but I think it now makes most sense as a xDrive version in a space the M5 once was in. A fun, very fast and competent daily. But it leaves plenty of room for the M2. I hope it stays considerably cheaper, lighter and more of an enthusiasts sports car.
Dude...HELGA IS GETTING BIGGER AND FATTER !!!
I'm waiting for this showdown, and I'm glad you guys did it.
The thing is they are comparing a 5 year old car to one that has finally caught up with them
Alfa Romeo is king well done Alfa Romeo
BMW is king
Love the Alfa - BMW have completely lost the plot and M3 occupies the same space that the M5 did - bloated luxo barge. Being back the tidy lightweight M3 saloon!!
Lost the plot, sounds funny from you boy, and no not the same space go check yourself before talking nonsense.
Get an m2 then. This is miles faster than that and all your old m3s.

Yes I agree
@@jaruslavnguyen4777 everybody does see through your soft ass🤣🤣
Did anyone really have any question which car they were gonna pick? The Alfa is one of the GOATs of the sedan world.
the goat that no one buys
I traded my m2 in for one two years ago and it was the best decision I’ve ever made
@@Tatamo1989 because it's ugly
GOATs?
haha little kid, it looks 2/10
Brilliant review. 2 top men. Alfa all day for me also. And I am a 3 time m3 owner
why would you want the uglier car?
@@saidalas7763 anybody blessed with the gift of sight will agree the new M3 is possible the ugliest m car ever made.
@@johncreedon1833 and that's confirmed from the sales?
You are just a fanboy.
Get your eyes checked
@@saidalas7763 a fan boy ? I have been driving M3's for the last 9 years. Still have one. And your calling me an Alfa fan boy 🤔🤣🤣🤣
@@johncreedon1833 get your eyes checked.
Seriously, there's no way a person with functioning eyes sees tha Alfa as the better looking car, unless he's a fanboy.
Ask your non car people firends, your gf or faimly members who they think is the better looking car.
101% sure they'll say the BMW, which is nothing more but reflecting the sales numbers
So what is the M3s Ring time ? Surely it must be better than Alfas, since you say its the better track car...
Alfa all day every day, no comparison
Why are you showing a photo of a non Quadrifoglio? Could not take a video of a Quadrifoglio interior which looks much better?
Glad someone else noticed it!!
I don't like the fact that BMW made the M3's body wider, but kept the rear doors untouched. The wide body behind the rear doors looks incredibly forced, and I am sorry that the accountants won and the designers lost. Don't buy this car, it was created by penny pinchers.
Bmws break like no one’s Business, lost faith in them ages ago.had 4 used ones and never had a great experience really.they are fun cars but they cost to
Much to fix and they deprecate to much.then again I’m not a rich man, so I shouldn’t be driving one anyway.
Alfa any day, this car is the nuts.
BMW had Alfa in its sights when it revised the Bimmer
BUT FAILED MISERABLY !!!
Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio
Prettier, faster and better 😉👍👍
@@jrgensenbo2999 said no one with half a brain or more
Alfa QV still the best sport sedan even bmw has a new M3 model
Good stuff. For my money it would be the Alfa every time.
That's why you don't have this kind of money. The people who do (most likely smart people), will buy the M3. We all know the M3 will be a sales success.
Sorry.
Tell that to O A ....THE TOOL !!!!
@@jamesterakazis6624 tell that to James Terakazis.. the FOOL!!
Alfa all day💪🍀🇮🇹
What would be REALLY good is a comparison review between the new M3 and an Alpina B3...
Great vid Autocar
I can’t believe you did not do a head to head drag race for us while you had the cars??!🤔🤨
@Can do Life True.
@Can do Life TOP SPEED ALFA ALL DAY LONG....
Still stay Alfa Romeo for life
BMW M3 for me all the way, I wouldn't even consider the Alfa. I think that some journalist are trying hard for people to side with them in hating this new BMW design language. If you don't like it so what and who cares coz these cars(BMW M3 and M4) will do grate, no matter how much you try. Grill this grill that as if people do not notice it. We have eyes and we see them and have no problem with it, speaking for those that likes them.
Definitely taking the M3 no debate
Definitely
Since 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia QV is Nightmare for other Cars in this Class
such are BMW M3 or M4 🍀
BMW playing catchup even after so many years. They even tried to copy the look of Alpha with the lights and grille.
These track comparisons are really pointless when the cars are equipped with different tires...even you say that alfas corsas suck in the wet/cold, but by the end you totally forget that and declare the m3 a better track car...with no lap time whatso ever taken into account. Btw, what is the M3s Ring time ? Surely it must be better than Alfas, since you say its the better track car...
Amusingly enough, the number plate improved the front end of the M3, LOL!
I drive a Giulia QF. The brakes are NOT a grabby at all. However there is variation in the brake calibration between cars with some (like mine) easily modulated and others (ones I tested) being more binary on or off.
BMW iDrive is best in class. Alpha infotainment system is dated and clunky. Even using Apple CarPlay it is not intuitive.
Carbon seats in the Alpha lift the interior. Nowhere near the BMW still though.
Thank you for another great review Matt.
