    Wherever there are rules, there are people using creative ways to break or at least bend them. This applies to real estate and planning regulations as much as anything else. For some, doing what they want on their own property, away from the prying eyes of the authorities is worth the risk of prosecution. Up until recently, the English homestead of Reeta Herzallah and Hamdi Almasri featured the most amazing hidden feature - until it was discovered by the local council.

      Yes, it stops people erecting monstrosities that dont fit in with the area. After travelling in the US, I see planning is a good idea. Some houses look like they have been designed by the Tele Tubbies. Ive seen roofs of differing pitches on the same building, out of propotion feature the works. You wonder if the designers had sight issues.

    How does converting a garage effect the public? It's ok to live under a bridge but not a small cottage. The council should keep their stinking nose out of people's private property and pay more attention to real problems like abused children or the homeless or by making efforts to not waste millions of hard earned tax dollars.

    Why people feel the need to snitch about a person living in their garage or building a structure in their own damn yard is beyond me. Do you feel better watching them have to demolish something on their own property? People need to get lives, are you seriously circling the neighborhood looking for wrong doers!?

      Did you not understand why what they did was illegal? Did you not understand how their selfishness would affect neighbours rights to have car parking spaces? and how them driving straight into a main highway would pose road safety concerns?

    • @Tiggaknock
      @Tiggaknock Před 6 lety +15

      People can be wrong. People write laws. So, no I don't understand, because the aerial view they showed is of a narrow side street with other cars parked right across from their makeshift driveway that would back into the road as well, no way that is a "main highway." I understand it was wrong for them to build fencing to block other parking, fine them, but I don't understand the living in the structure issue. Even if that was a garage they'd pull into the street anyway, that is their freaking driveway and their particular structure still looks just like a garage. I don't see how that hurts anyone but nosy people in their business. Mainly, I don't understand why people buy houses on top of other people if they plan to expand. Get some land out in the outskirts and build without answering to people like this. You have a permit? Cool. If not, that's not my concern as your neighbor on my way to work in the morning if it doesn't affect me living my life.

    It never ceases to amaze me how the council comes down hard on folks who OWN their property and make garages into living accommodation. Yet they can put non fire resistant cladding on a high rise tower causing the death of many tenants in Grenfell Tower. It seems there is a law for some but the council can do whatever it damned well pleases. I applied for an extension to my home and despite the fact not one neighbour complained with some even saying they liked it the council said the side extension was too high. This when it was well below the height of the existing house. Yet they recently sold land to a private building contractor making a fortune, who has now built a five story flat complex opposite flats and shops nearby. This plan is far higher than any extension I ever proposed, which I was told was not in keeping with local properties!! Like I said, a law for them and a law for us...It seems they can do as they please...we on the other hand have to jump through hoops. Its truly not fair. I am in a wheelchair and my extension was to create a bedroom and a bathroom and extend my kitchen to allow for my wheelchair on the ground floor which currently exists of a cloak toilet, lounge and kitchen (small) I also wanted to have a carers bedroom installed above the side extension... So that my carer could be accommodated. The property is currently a two bed end of terrace with a large piece of land at the side. I wanted to make it into a four bed...so that I would have a bedroom for my daughter who lives with us, a bedroom for us, a bedroom for my carer so that when she needed to sleep over she had her own space, and a guest bedroom for anyone visiting...Yet it was not allowed. Now I sleep in a caravan because it is all on one floor. I had no choice, because i could no longer manage the stairs in my own house... So I can no longer reside in it. I appealed and the council still said no!! Yet they passed cladding that was NOT fireproof on a high rise building causing the death of many...I mean WTF?!!! And they passed flats five stories high locally ...apparently they weren't to high at all!!!

    So they removed the garage door when they converted the garage to a "garden annex".
    Put up a fence around it, then when they took the fence down, wanted to convert what they believed was a legal dwelling back to a garage now that people could see it?
    And they say they had no idea they were breaking any laws?

  • @FriedTurkey

When you actually decide to buy a home there will be this bank guy who wants to send his inspector (at your cost) to inspect and then demand some improvements all while you stand there with your wife's panties in a knot. Then there will be a pesky insurance man with some demands of his own. It's their land and their house. They will let you pretend you own it, maintain it, and stay in it for a small monthly fee.

    This is so weird because in America you can build an apartment upstairs from your garage they call it the mother in-law suite or the guest house they're just mad because the government didn't get any money from it that's all it is you cannot help anybody without the government getting a portion of the money that's how greedy the government is whether it's in England or United States

      totally different scenario. what happened in the video is equivalent to living in a home owner association neighborhood. Before you buy the house in the UK or USA you HAVE to see what neighborhood rules they have. Go ahead and Google the problems people in the usa have had with HOA's and how some are being fined. HOA's were supposed to help keep blight (rundown homes, overgrown lawns, trash piles, etc) from happening. Homes cost a lot so if your neighbors make their homes trashy it makes your home worth less and you lose your hard earned money. This can really really make people mad to lose money just because their neighbors make the neighborhood look 'ghetto'.

    There hasn't been 'open land' in England since 1650, all land has been divided up & owned by someone, either individuals or local, regional or national government. The English have had to be quite strict on the usage of land otherwise developers would have built on every available plot of land, eliminating all farms, parks, etc. Because everything is so compact it's also recognized that what is done on a plot of land affects the property values on adjacent plots of land. Hence strict controls on uses & types & designs of structures. Americans visiting the U.K. are often startled at what is considered a full size house as the typical British full size house is about 60% of the size of an American house of the same design. I once lived in a 304 sq ft studio in Manhattan which I felt claustrophobic in yet some British friends thought it quite spacious. So a direct comparison between Britain & America in regards to land use & restrictions has to allow for the vast size difference & population density. It always startles me as how efficient the British are in the use of land, managing outside of the major cities to make the land seem far more rural than it really is. All that is due to strict controls, which were arrived at over a century ago out of necessity.

    • @lll4599
      @lll4599 Před 6 lety +1

      Martin S right 👍but the distance between the garage door and their street remains the same. So if they have two cars, one will be parked on that space, and the other car along the street. Making them destroy the property is a bit extreme. Maybe fine them an amount that can also serve as a deterrent. The councils should also include ‘clear terms and conditions for erecting unapproved buildings be it a garage, house, or patio’, since it’s becoming a regular occurrence with property owners. Put it in as part of the agreement, terms and conditions of sale or rental 😏🤷‍♀️

    It's not the county of "Lye-chester" or even "Lye-sester". Leicester is pronounced "Lester". [Gloucester is "Gloster" and Worcester is "Wuster"].

      Alan George Barstow Are you a native Brit? Do Brits use Worcestershire sauce? Is it pronounced Wooster-shy-er or Wooster-sheer or maybe Wooster-sher? (My mom always said -sheer. My dad always pretended he couldn't say it. He thought he was being funny, and maybe it was when I was 6.)

    • @alangeorgebarstow
      @alangeorgebarstow Před 6 lety

      david david, I am English (I'm not fond of the word 'Brit') and we do indeed use Worcestershire sauce. I expect that is because it was invented here and has always been a popular ingredient in our cooking. The 'shire' part of any English county is generally 'swallowed' and hardly emphasised when pronounced. Most people say a vague 'sher' (the final 'r' being almost non-existent) when pronouncing 'shire'. Thus, Worcestershire is pronounced 'wooster-sher' (or 'wuster-shuh'). Incidentally, in practice, most British people refer to the sauce as 'Worcester sauce' (dropping the 'shire' bit completely) and this is pronounced 'wooster sauce' (or 'wuster sauce'). By the way, Lea & Perrins (of Worcester) invented the sauce and that is the only version to buy. I hope this helps.

      Alan George Barstow I am very sorry and embarrassed that I offended you. Please accept my apology. Thank you very much for talking about what might be the most enigmatic food word in the US. I am relieved to know I was raised pronouncing it mostly correctly. And I would share that I was raised on Lea & Perrins. I recall as a child the bottle was sold wrapped in brown paper with, I think, a red band around the neck of the bottle. Never really used it with anything other than beef and steak, but I think we can purchase another sauce today made for chicken and poultry, but neither has the brown paper wrapping. If you ever have any questions about how we say any US place names, how we might pronounce a particular word, or what we call something, give me a shout. Imagine my surprise when, being given directions to find our rented cottage in the Highlands, I was told to drive over the sleeping policeman (We call them speed bumps.) I was confused when purchasing a bottle of water to drink and was asked in return, "Still?" There was an awkward pause, and I was about to reply, "Of course I still want it. I just asked for it." Before I embarrassed myself, the question was repeated, "Would you like a bottle of sparkling water or a bottle of still water?" and I understood what she meant. Over here we refer to all bottled water as, simply, water, or by its brand name (Evian, Perrier, etc.) unless there is something different or special about it - sparkling, flavored, tonic, seltzer, or what-have-you. I very much appreciate the kindness shown when a shopkeeper explained what a toilet roll is (here a roll of toilet paper, toilet tissue, bathroom tissue, or by the brand name (Charmin, for instance). Well, cheers then. Thanks, again.

      david david, Please don't feel embarrassed or be sorry; you did not offend me in the slightest. I was only too happy to explain the differences in pronunciation between our respective countries. Yes, we do have some quaint customs and they must be most bewildering to foreigners (I too get confused when visiting different parts of the British Isles). I am quite au fait with a lot of American parlance since, here in Europe, we watch a lot of American films (movies) and enjoy concerts from many American musicians (I am a huge fan of the Blues). I have only visited the United States on two occasions and I enjoyed my visits on both occasions immensely. The first time was 1980 when I visited Los Angeles. It was just after the Mount St Helens eruption in Washington State and the effect this had on the west coast weather systems was incredible. It actually blew all the foul air (motor fumes) away from the city and the locals told me they could see their city (and breathe clean air) for the first time in decades! Before my visit, I bought a small booklet, which explained the differences between the way both countries talk. In the book I was surprised to find that Americans call prawns "shrimps" and shrimps "prawns". The foreword was written by a British politician who, on his first visit Stateside, was invited to a White House banquet. He toured the tailor shops of Washington DC asking for "braces for his trousers" and all he got was confused looks It was only when a local informed him that he ought to ask for "suspenders for his pants" that he managed to buy the merchandise he sought. [in the UK, "suspenders" (garter belts) are worn by ladies to hold up their "nylon stockings" (hose)]. My second visit to the States took in New York State, New Jersey ("Noo Joisey"), Pennsylvania, and bits of Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut before returning and having a few days exploring NYC. I loved both visits and met some wonderful people. I must return at some stage before I get too old. Thanks again for your kind reply.

    LOL I rented from a dude like this in Los Angeles years ago. He turned the 2nd story of his house into a 2 bedroom apt, where I lived, which was probably legal. But then he converted his garage (totally illegal) and rented it to a young family, and finally his TOOL SHED hahaha. He put a toilet and shower stall in it, and rented it out too. He had a nice little hood empire going there until the city found out and shut him down. Luckily the upstairs 2-bedroom where I lived remained

    Here in the UK? you need planning permission if you wish to extend or add to your property. If you only wish to change the way you 'use' the building your in? you still need to inform the council planners to make sure everything is done to current' building regulations. This couple, attempted to get around both of them issues. These 2 are NOT of low IQ. They are both doctors therefore 1 would consider them to have a 'brain' between their ears. They both 'knew' what they were doing. They both 'knew' it was wrong. If they were un-sure? then all they had to do was visit their local council planners and simply 'ask' for advice. Did they do that? NO! WHY did they not do that? (you decide). But as always, right at the end, when caught with your pants down? they come up with the usual trump card, 'racism'. I got NO simpathy with people like this. There is NO excuse what-so-ever. Trouble is, THIS type of thing is wayyyy too prevelant in the UK, and guess what? it is a very popular issue among people of ethnic minority. Trust me, this I KNOW!

      WRONG> In the Uk (and I would have thought ANY sensible country), when you want to purchase a property? you expect that property to have been built correctly, in accordance with recognised building standards and practises. The UK has building regulations to make sure all buildings that are built? meet these said requirments. Before any1 can start to biuld anything? people MUST apply for 'planning permission' if you wish to build OR extend your dwelling. If you merely wish to change the use of certain rooms in your house? you STILL need to meet, 'building regulations'. This completely arrogant couple KNEW what they did was wrong. They went ahead and did what they did AFTER being refused permission form the council. END OF. This pair are NOT people of low IQ. They are both doctors. Therefore there is NO excuse they can come up with. It is their utter arrogance and stoubourness that they went ahead in spite of the fact that they KNEW they were wrong AND they knew what the consequences might be if/when they were found out. In my view? if they refuse to comply with the councils directions? then the council should take control and do the nesseccary work and then send them the bill. Job Done!

We have a small one bedroom cottage built next to our house in our garden here in South Africa, no problems with planning permission as long as three neighbours approve. We are a quiet family and dont party so we expect our renters to be quiet people too. As I am housebound due to being ill and only one income coming in for years with 2 boys the extra finances from our kind renters is a god send... its our property so we should be able to build if it does not interfere with our neighbours. Some of our neighbours do NOT give us the same consideration when they have their very loud drunken parties that go on til 2 or 3am.

    If you own your property and there is no homeowner's association in place, you should be able to build what ever you wish on your property. You cannot travel across another persons property or add roads or driveways on land that isnt yours though. I understand that the HOA's are in place to prevent people from dragging the value of property down but I chose to buy a home that we really liked for the reason that I don't want people to tell me how to live. I have never received any complaints on my home either though. Some people just don't have a clue towards how to act.
