    Dr. Douglas J. Lisle, Ph.D.is the co-author of The Pleasure Trap available here:
    www.amazon.com/dp/1570671974?...
    Dr. Doug Lisle is an evolutionary psychologist and co-author of The Pleasure Trap: Mastering the Hidden Force that Undermines Health and Happiness. He and his colleagues (Jennifer Howk and Richard Seidel) have developed a revolutionary method for approaching life challenges and improving self-confidence and self-esteem. They describe their approach as Esteem Dynamics - an approach with clinical insights derived from evolutionary psychology.
    Central figures having major influence on the development of Esteem Dynamics include Richard Dawkins, John Tooby and Leda Cosmides, David Buss, Robert Trivers, Steven Pinker, and Geoffrey Miller. All of these individuals are considered world-leading theorists in evolutionary theory and human psychology. Somewhat surprisingly, insights from these trailblazers has yet to reach mainstream clinical psychology, and thus major advances stemming from some of the world’s greatest thinkers have yet to be systematically applied to problems of helping people improve their lives. Esteem Dynamics is the first such effort, and weds Dr. Lisle’s 30-years of clinical experience to the deep insights into human nature only recently available via evolutionary psychology.
    Dr. Lisle received his undergraduate education from the University of California, San Diego. He completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Virginia, and was then appointed Lecturer in Psychology at Stanford University. His research and clinical interests include health and wellness, self-esteem, relationship satisfaction, the treatment of anxiety and depression, the genetics of individual differences, and optimizing achievement motivation. In addition to his work with Esteem Dynamics, Dr. Lisle lectures widely on health and wellness.

    Unfortunately, the idea that you cannot overeat on whole plant foods is not entirely true. It is EASY for me to eat a HUGE meal of japanese sweet potatoes and steamed broccoli with nothing added. When I see peaches on the counter, stuffed as I am, I will eat multiples of them for dessert. And repeated consistently, up goes the body fat. Some of us who are not good at honoring hunger and fullness still have to fight the urge to overeat and still gain weight. It's been years since I have had any sort of processed things like cookies, chips, etc, and they are not at all appealing anymore. I just took those unhealthy habits and moved them to whole food (particularly fruit). While the effects may not be as dramatic, weight gain still happens if you eat more than your body needs, no matter what food it is.

      If I salt my food, I gain weight, my body is sensitive to it. Dry flour products definitely take a hit on my weight @ 1500 calories a pound; gave up eating Cheerios & Shredded Wheat with my coffee & lost another 12 lbs. Eating anything 600 calories a pound or less & I'm losing or maintaining weight.

      I also find myself overeating on vegan foods. However, I've just started to learn to stop eating after 6pm. We should try to learn to stop eating when we are about 75% full; it is so much healthier. Let's all start to practice good habits.

      That sounds about right, taking the median of 18lbs of potatoes per week is 6,372 calories, so 910 calories per day from potatoes, Your BMR + Activity burn for a male 5'7" 120lbs, assuming you exercise 1-3 times per week is about 1977 calories burnt per day, so potatoes make up just a bit under half of your daily diet to maintain your weight.

    I have the utmost respect for Dr. Lisle, but the open loops/associations area is one that I totally disagree with him about. It is pretty clear that he has had a very blessed life and it is no wonder that he doesn't understand open loops/associations and how they can constantly pound on you and how your brain can make connections and associations to current situations where you have no idea what the connection is or why these traumas are being called up. I think that he does not appreciate how your brain can make much broader connections and associations than the specific traumas might seem to warrant and repeated traumas can make connections to more and more areas of your life and life experiences.

      From my own personal experience, eating potatoes is kind of self-correcting. You can't really over eat them. It's similar to, if you had a basket of apples, and started eating apples - after X number of apples, your body would just tell you enough. When I eat potatoes, my eyes and brain thinks I can eat a lot of potatoes, but once I've eaten the amount of potatoes that satiates my body, I cannot even force myself to eat any more potatoes. In my mind, I'm thinking that no, you can't really overeat them because your body will tell you to stop.

    I think when it comes to grandparents, sometimes they don't understand the ways they undermine the parents and they always think they know best.
    Feels like an unfair question given we don't know the perspective of the parent.
    My kids have a wonderful grandparent but there are a lot of ways grandparents think they're helpful and it's not. The subtle or not subtle undermining can get tiresome. And when time with a grandparent results in behavioral issues after a visit, it's not an incentive to allow the grandparents to "help" when it's not helpful.

    • @elizabethheiland5632
      @elizabethheiland5632 Před rokem +1

      I totally agree. My mom tries to undermine what I ask her for my children all of the time. For instance, she was trying to get them to do chores for her and pay them a quarter. I don't see the point of that, she keeps prodding them to do it, do it. And my mom's vey coable to do it herself. So I told her they dont need to do chores, let them just play. So that made her mad she told me later in a fight. One year later, I just had a new baby and my mom starts slipping my daughter 5 dollars and making a big deal that it's for helping mommy. Then she keeps announcing my daughter Should get paid for helping. My daughter has been very helpful all on her own and I don't think it's right for my mom to steal her pride like that. It'd look like she's only helping because my mom's paying her. Now Ill have to bring it up to her again that I don't like that So I agree, it's the subtle undermining.
