Harvard and Spitfire aircraft: Zoom H5 Road test!

When you’re stood ten feet away from a Merlin engine starting up, it’s a deafening but magical sound!
At Compton Abbas airfield, near Shaftesbury, Dorset, UK, these two vintage aircraft appeared at the weekend, taking off, landing and taking very lucky (and wealthy!) people out for flights.
I recently bought a Zoom H5 to do some field recording on a project, and it captured these two effortlessly. Can the mics record a 27-liter V12 Rolls Royce? You bet they can!

I had the experience of the Lancaster bomber "Just Jane" at RAF Conningsby Lincolnshire... to say it was loud would be an understatement! I'm not one to glorify war, but I have to say the Spitfire is a very beautiful machine indeed! Nice to see you back!

what setting on your recorder ?? I assume you used the stereo head for the zoom . I use a H6 and for morning birds or overnight nature , I dial in to Level 7

With the spitfire I had to bring the mic level down a fair bit! Yes-it’s the XY head and 48k 24 bit
