- Found this bit of old footage amongst my dad's tapes. A good representation of NBC's football coverage at the time, along with a couple neat promos and commercials. Taped off KCST (later KNSD). Marty Levin is still their main anchor as far as I know.
Man the good old days, man I miss them days
ahmad Rashad is another guy I miss as an NFL analyst. football is still great today but there was something special about the way it was done in the 80's. I can see why the sport experienced so much growth through that decade, it was a golden age.
This is when pre, half and post game shows were solely about football...no over-production, no stupid comedy bit, or seven songs with explosions...JUST FOOTBALL
it still is, and to be honest, this was DULL.
Stevie must be a millenial
This is AWESOME! My fondest memories are watching NFL football with my grandfather in the 80s
I'm old enough to remember when San Diego had a team.
lmao
No I can't go I called her she won't be home till 6
man I miss this. I remember playing on Saturday and just relaxing and watching NFL on Sundays.
,
Good analysis by costas, ahmad and everyone at NBC Sports.
NBC was cookin at this point. They had the NFL, MLB and the NBA was on the way.
Brings back a lot of memories. When there were both baseball and football Cardinals in St. Louis, the Rams called Southern California home, the now Tennessee Titans were known as the Houston Oilers, and the Indianapolis Colts were NFL punching bags. Things have a changed a lot over the last 20-plus years.
Love that cool effect for the peacock in the NFL Live logo.
KCST is now known as KNSD (standing for Nbc San Diego) and is now owned by NBC itself.
Don Criqui sounds the same today as he did back then.
This is awesome Vhs from NBC covering the NFL! More soon.
Plenty of great old NFL Today footage, would love to see more old NFL Live footage as well.
This is so great to watch... when football was real! No soap opera garbage! I even got a kick out of the old commerials!
oh shut up, it is still real, you get on the field for once.
I somewhat agree with you, while I won't go to the extent of claiming which coverage should belong where, I must admit that Fox Sports (in itself,) as well as the new generation of ESPN has been terrible for maintaining a level of respectability and professionalism for their part in covering the NFL.
don criqui on the play by play at the beginning
Love the 1980's, the NFL in the 1980's were fabulous in those days!
Classic NFL NBC tv coverage.
Nice job my Costas : "Colts are an eight point underdog lead by nine at the half". No widespread legal Sports Betting in 1987! Lol
The NFL on NBC at it's finest, nice!
Back when primetime tv was watchable
+Kevin S I've seen several comments (and tend to hold this view myself) that Phil Simms' best work as a broadcaster was working with Dick Enberg and Paul Maguire his first three years in the booth. It seems like once CBS got the AFC coverage in 1998; Simms hit a plateau that he never seemed to move beyond.
man home depot.was in san diego..back then...dam.. home depot didnt come to detroit unitl the late 90's ..
Back when the NFL was still fun.
Junior Seau's brain might disagree.
So, let's see, now the Oilers are in Tennessee, Cleveland moved to Baltimore after the Colts moved to Indianapolis, the Rams have gone from Los Angeles to St. Louis because the Cardinals moved to Arizona but now the Rams have gone back to L.A.
markko17 and the hapless Patriots are the best dynasty ever.
@@Grandizer8989 lol not even close
And Cleveland would get another Browns team while Houston would get another NFL team, the Texans.
I really miss real highlights
AWESOME! MORE NFL NBC IN 1997.
Teams looked more flashier with white shoes rather than with black ones
Hi know that is hard to find good stream , thats why I am watching it on ScreenVariety :)
why do we need 10 different people to talk about one thing in the studio? one guy is more than enough to sum it all up.now its all the guys talking about who wont be playing, and will be playing, what the temperature is going to be in buffalo.
Matlock, Tuesday!
FYI-Steelers won the game referenced in this clip, not the Seahawks. The final score was 13-9.
Sunday 12.6.87!
@SuperBowlExpert Interesting, although I guess by that point the Steelers were a somewhat average team; IIRC their last Super Bowl appearance by that point was 1980.
This was back when you KNEW the Seahawks would beat the Steelers rather than have the official screw things up.
At about 5 minutes in, the Redskins score comes in. Shockingly, Bob Costas doesn't stop sports and lecture everyone on how the name is a racial slur. Rather, he uses it multiple times.
P.C indoctination wasn't as much en vouge back then.
Yeah, and airplanes had a smoking section.
true
I'd like to punch him in the face.
Snowflake.
R.I.P. Andy Griffith
@4:38, Seakawks 12-year vet Steve Largent had moves that had not been invented yet, and phenomenal concentration. At this point, Largent could seemingly play forever, and because speed had never been his strong suit, the loss of a step or two over the years was hardly noticeable. Largent was a technician who got on a defender quick off the line and could turn people. Most WRs sell a fake then get into their route. Largent sold two or three fakes. CBs who bit on 1st move got burned for 6 points.
@SuperBowlExpert I guess the 80's was a somewhat down decade for the Steelers; although they did make the playoffs four times.
Matlock was always kicking some fuckin ass!
@jwp1002steel Interesting, the Steelers actually won, although 13-9 probably wasn't a very exciting final score.
Chuck Noll wanted def. coord. Tony Dungy to succeed him and be the first black head coach. But Rooney had Noll demote him after the '88 season. Instead of taking the demotion he went to KC under Schottenheimer as db coach. Art Shell would be first black HC. And Schottenheimer's DC Cowher would replace Noll
Classy bob..
Did Bob offer Paul and Ahmad lunch?
@2:22-25, Colts LB #98 Johnie Cooks benefited from new blitzing scheme in 1987 & rediscovered pass rush skills he always had.Cooks was physical hitter, strong at attack point, penetrated well(especially on sweep),& was Colts' most instinctive coverage LB. @2:26,#38 Eugene Daniel had good acceleration, especially driving forward on the ball, good footwork & a nose for contact on sweeps. But Daniel tended to stay in backpedal too long & lose where the ball was at times, costing him 6 INTs from '86-'87.
A rare time that the Seahawks didn't win a game against a decent time back then; although I don't know how good or bad the Steelers were in 1987.
Nickle98499 The Steelers had a great defense in 87. They scored 6 or 7 defensive touchdowns. But they were woeful offensively. Mark Malone threw 6 TD's and 19ints.
@5:16-18, Oilers SS #25 Keith Bostic was a bell-ringer; a run-forcer and blitzing load who would draw some flags but also sent up a red flag to WRs. @5:34-36, Oilers 5'9" RB #20 Allen Pickett was versatile & cat-quick. Pinkett was a smart runner & was especially effective when using his remarkable cut-back ability on draw plays out of the run-and-shoot. Pound for pound, Pinkett was the strongest player on the team.
@a7b7c78 Montana was the best ever!!! Stop being a hater!!! 4 Super Bowl rings and 3 SB MVP to prove it.
@DUBS82 ---- I couldn't agree more. And get rid of dome stadiums.
The Chargers scab team won all three games and the Chargers bolted off to a 8 and 2 record .... then it turned to shit , Fouts last season the Bolts lost their last 5 games to miss the playoffs. It was the last season they had the blue helmet with a yellow lightning bolt . I cried when they changed their uniforms in 88 . The last season the Bolts had yellow facemask too !!!
Mark Malone Steelers crushed them.....so you KNOW they sucked!!!!
Mr Gorbachev tear down that wall
...and no protests!
Awww poor white guy
Cool...
@giantlew I disagree (to an extent). I think that the MLB should be on whatever channel Al Michaels is on.
Who dat our first good season
wonder who won
dON cICKY was a good announcer.
Oh man that in the grasp shit was awful.
You're not kidding. It was nonsense. Someone said that if they had this rule when he played Fran Tarkenton could not have thrown half of the touchdown passes that he did!
The Chargers fell off a cliff in 1987. Riding high st 8-1, only to lose their last 6, and miss the playoffs.
CBs who bit on Largent's 2nd move got burned for 1st down. CBs who didn't bite on any of Largent's moves generally found themselves pushing Largent out of bounds at the tail end of a 15-yard out.Slants, hooks, curls, ins & outs-Largent ran all routes meticulously and was productive from sideline to sideline.Largent also excelled at catching the low ball & his moves and uncanny ability to break away from defenders without blazing speed was testimony to his intelligence, hands, concentration & burst.
Hines Ward was better, shame he won't get in hof...Steeler bias, Seahawk suck so you didn't neeed to do much to getin HOF.
In the grasp...What an asinine rule. Patriots would be champs in 07 if they hadn't got rid of that rule, thank the Lord.
For me the glory years of NFL on television began with the yellow-stripe technology.
Except that the Lions still suck.
Cool...
