What if he stayed at Mercedes for 2013?: czcams.com/video/OguwadtuK5c/video.html
I remember you mentioning wanting to make this video a while ago and I'm so glad you did. One thing that really hurt Schumacher's return in 2010 that no one really mentions was the change from grooved tyres to slick ones. Michael of course was used to a whole different way of handling tyres and as you said, with no in season testing he was effectively slower than nico in 2010. But by the second half of 2011 he had pretty much closed the gap and I'd say he was even faster than him in 12.
If things had played like this, he would've outscored Nico by at least 15-20 points.
I doubt it was the switch from grooved to slick tyres that had an effect, he'd spent his first 7 years in F1 racing on slick tyres after all. It can't be underestimated just how bad his motorbike crash was, it could very easily have been fatal, and he was still recovering in 2010.
My favourite memory from his comeback is the clever overtake on the final corner of Monaco 2010. It was so incredibly cheeky and so incredibly *Michael* to have found a loophole in those rules.
And so incredibly Damon Hill to be on the stewards panel that gave him an unwarranted 30-sec penalty for it...
That's why he is lauded. He wasn't afraid to push the boundaries if there was a legal way to do it.
It was a weird quirk for me that I ended up a Schumacher fan in 2010 when he returned. In the 2000s I supported Hakkinen, Montoya and Alonso against him (None were my favourite drivers though, those were Fisichella, Massa, Frentzen and Trulli). But when he came back I wanted him to stamp his authority and remind us of the legend he was. It's a shame that's how history panned out, and even bigger shame what happened to him. Keep Fighting Champ!
I suppose folks were happy to see him come back and try again.
What I found ironic is that when watching coverage the BBC one time around the Monaco GP in 2012 stated that Schumacher had an "incredibly poor" start to the season just before he clinched the Monaco GP pole and would need to do better if he wanted to stay on for 2013. Incredible how envious the BBC were of Michael in those days.
It was incredibly unfair to say that. He had so much unreliability whereas Nico had a tank.
It was the most disappointed Brundle had been since Shrek 2 @@LawVS
@@connorappleton1945Surely Brundle had Shrek the Third in mind when he said that, bevause there ain't no way any sane human being was dissappointed in Shrek 2
MS was known for his amazing reliabilty record and winning when other cars broke. 2012 was the year when most of bad luck struck and he thought, "It's probably an omen my time is done." I hope he's doing well in his circumstances.
I am not referring to his skiing accident, more about his F1 career having to end one day.
Perhaps yeah. The momentum wound up with Nico
I never considered how many points he lost here. Good points!
Micheal could have also been a 9-time world champion and won over 100 races if he didn't retire.
LEWIS COULD HAVE BEEN AN 10 TIME CHAMPION
ehhhhh i don’t know about that one haha
On my fantasy, he retire after the 2013 season and still competing in 2007-2009.
Agreed. I was a bit upset by Kimi's performance in 2007. Michael would have won title with a few races remaining because Ferrari was a bit faster than McLaren.
And Prost an 8 times world Champion!!
Glad you're making these "History of F1" videos. I didn't start watching until 2022 (although I was generally aware of what was going on in 2021, and I knew what F1 was as far back as 2005).
As a fellow Schumey fanboy, I always appreciate videos like this! :D keep up the good work Masako :)
2000's Michael would've absolutely crushed any technical issues and would've demmanded the team to solve it.
2010's Schumacher knew his goal wasn't really winning, he wanted to help push the tram forward. In 2013 and beyond Mercedes has spoken that Michael's feedback was fundamental for them to develop the car to what they got in 2014 and beyond.
For whatever's worth. I think Michael was at peace with having issues as long as Nico had a clean race. He didn't have anything else to prove.
#KeepFightingMichael
Of course. Him getting the podium against the odds was enough for him. He still had it.
I miss Schumacher on the grid... I feel like if he would have never left racing, he wouldn't have been out skiing that fateful afternoon... God bless the F1 king! 🏁
Yeah. Such a shame.
maybe he'd come back for a race or two like jenson did in 2017
@@dutcharest9731 he can't. Michael Schumacher is having severe health issues and I guess needs constant care since his skiing accident... Mick would need to drive Dad. (Which would still be cool af!)
@@dutcharest9731From what little has got out from his family (I try to avoid the click bait videos and articles regarding his condition), he's most likely unable to communicate, let alone walk.
I hope I'm wrong, I _truly_ do, but the fact that they say next to nothing about his condition, the worse his condition is likely to be. What little I've seen from "friends", his condition is pretty tragic 😢.
I'll be honest, I wasn't a Schumacher fan when he was driving (or during the race weekend), particularly in his first career, but I had nothing against him as a person. He always seemed to be a devoted family man, which we can see in Mick's behaviour. He's a lovely lad. I always respected him for that. Saying this, if I could do _anything_ to make him better, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
um, duh? i was saying if he didn't have the accident
thank you for this. Ive always felt so frustrated as a schumi fan in the first half of 2012. I knew he lost a lot of points due to dnf but i didnt know it was this much. It would have been great if this was his final season. It would have ended more fondly
It is just a hypothetical but you feel a couple of podiums and consistent top 5 finishes were denied him whilst the car was strong.
One thing to note is that in 2009 he suffered a horrendous motorbike accident. He suffered a Basal Skull Fracture which is usually 90% fatal and apparently suffered neuron damage - hence why he couldn't replace Massa after his own head injury. It's something that sometimes overlooked regarding the severity of the crash and to come back racing after that and just get back to the pace by 2012, you have to give him a lot of credit.
Of course. He came back from near death and drove splendidly.
Awesome video. enjoyed it a lot ! Keep Fighting Michael!
I’m so glad someones covered this i’ve always thought this Michael was so good in 2012 it felt like he was getting into his stride again like he was almost a rookie in 2010 finding his feet
Another fun little “What If” video there Law 👍 Even though I wasn’t always the biggest fan of Michael, I did feel for him during this last period of his career. Just to have him there on the grid again was just really cool to see and it’s a dam shame he wasn’t able to get at least a few more podiums or at least one more victory 🏁
Thanks for the video , Michaels last season wasnt bad and still showed he could be competitive, he only had terrible bad luck..
Indeed. You could easily claim he would've outperformed Nico.
I literally wrote an article about this a while back. People don’t realize how well Schumacher was driving in 2012. Some of it was his fault though. A lot of needless contact.
Of course. Although Rosberg was quite prone to prangs himself.
@@LawVSThe biggest shame is that is gave so much ammo to Schumi haters. While I wasn’t in his fan club, I admired him greatly and could see his amazing speed was still there even if less consistently.
@@LawVS Rosberg and Schumi though. What a pair for car development. While I think driver development importance is overrated by a factor of 50, it’s still important and these guys are two of the best ever for that.
Great video keep it up you're doing amazing things 😁👍
Keep Fighting Michael
Don't forget Mick
Major problems for Schumacher was the Mercedes over heat it tyres and it was worst with Pirelli tyres. Back in Ferrari days he was obliged to use harder component than his team mate because of his driving style. His driving style also need more reflex and it's a problem when you become older. He suffered motion seeckness in simulator and it was a problem without test sessions. He struggled with drs and according to Rosberg he sometimes forgot to open it or it was open. This explain some of his crash
But in fact he was able to federate the team and point it in the right direction. Even Jock Clear (Villeneuve engineer) who hated him before enjoyed to work with Michael.
He clearly wasn't lucky and take penalty others didn't take but he delivered some great performance during these 3 years.
That's a fair assessment. I get the same vibe from Seb at Aston.
1:53 I think the last decade and more, FIA and manufacturers realised that they can't constantly throw away money and they have to really push for sustainability. If they had done that till this era especially after a pandemic, this sport would be way close to shutting down.
Indeed. The 2010s saw the rise of sustainability.
the real GOAT
Finally a realistic assessment of Schumacher's second career in F1. And as some people said, the true severity of the motorcycle crash and the injuries he sustained in 2009 only started to come to light years after his retirement in 2012. Nowadays, we can safely assume that he was still nowhere near being 100% fit come 2010.
We should also factor in that he had to completely change his philosophy toward the sport with much less testing to work it out.
As a Schumi fan who watched him win Spa 92 against Nigel I was so happy to see him come back but couldn't believe his luck. But Mercedes was lucky to have him build the team up
Indeed. Michael knew how to build a team around the drivers.
I remember Michael "complaining" about the weight of the car in an interview shortly after he came out of retirement. Now, 40 or 50kg more may not sound all that much (and they were still "lightweights" in comparison) but for him it was quite a big deal.
It's nearly a 10% gain from the 600kg 2000 machines. Quite a big difference.
as a newer fan of F1 i really appricate this type of content as I don't really know much about the history of F1
You're welcome. It's good to get in touch with its history.
Michael really came on well in ‘12. Pity he was pushed out
It looked like he finally got the hang of the car. Shame the car broke so often that he was made to look inferior again.
@@LawVS In an era that rewarded rear stability and taking care of the tyres which was the opposite of his driving style throughout his career. Certainly adapted a lot better than people think
Despite being a Damon fangirl (even now; it's why I am a neutral for today's grid. It's better for the blood pressure!), I was choked up for him when he got that podium. He put a car which barely deserved it up there.
I'll be honest, thinking about him now can make me cry. I've got through a few tissues watching this.😢 If only I had a magic wand, eh?
I think we all wish for that wand.
is amazing how Schumi was very lucky having championship dominating cars but at the same time so unlucky he retired both times with his team winning the championship next year
2006 could've been his had his car not died at Suzuka. Again.
Great video 🥲 what coulda been with Mick if he didn't start with Haas though?
I got you there! I have a video about what if he started at Alfa.
I wish Schumi stayed till 2014 so that we could have seen how he was in a championship winning car again
It's a shame the car denied him a chance to get closer to Nico. If he hadn't had those failures he would've had more points.
I mean the most heartbraking one was 2006 to be honest. GOD THAT MAN HAD BAD LUCK. My man was flying to his 8th. The moment when his engine blew up in suzuka is something Inwill never forget. That moment I knew it was f****
And then the 10 grid drop in brazil, the puncture from Fisi... MY MAN HAD SO MUCH BAD LUCK. Not michael Masi type of bad luck but the worst technical luck.
People often forget how close michael was to 8.
Then there was 1998 when all that stopped him from the title was a tyre blowout.
@@LawVS Insane.... Literally insane how close my man was to even more WDC
Henri Coanda mentioned🤙
Wow, I never knew Schumacher was SO unlucky that year! I mean, I watched (back when I was a kid) and then rewatched some years ago Valencia 2012, and I knew Rosberg overscored Michael in Mercedes, but I always wrongly assumed that was because of his age.
Note apart, I find very ¿interesting? (I guess) the one-session-engines.
Age isn't the problem. As long as any drivers in any given age can still reach their performance threshold they can operate in their absolute best. Each drivers have their own performance thresholds physically and motoric respond ability to show their absolute best. Higher performance level than their thresholds only make them more durable not make them faster in term of raw pace. The stronger you are, the faster you are. It isn’t like this in F1. Talent, skill, and technique are much important than strength to be the best F1 driver. There is also law of physic limiting how fast you can go. I think a higher fitness level give a driver a longer durability to operate in his absolute best. FE: might be by being 20ish Russell can do 23 back-to-back races, might be Hamilton can't do it because he is close to his 40ish. He may get exhausted faster than Russell.
Oh yeah. Teams had cash to throw at one-time engines just for the sake of ultimate performance.
Imagine Schumi having the 8 title in 2012. goose bumps
I don't see him doing it in 2012 but it would've been a huge boost for his confidence and probably ensured his retirement would not have happened then.
Poor Schumi at the time. I always imagine if Schumi only DNF because of car failure like in Australia, Monaco, Hungary, Singapore, and India, not like in China, Spain, and Canada, and always can scored point if he can finished. I can imagine if he can always became "Best of the Rest" behind Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari in 2010-2012.
On my fantasy, he retire after the 2013 season and still competing in 2007-2009.
04/01/2024 17:02 At My Local Time.
so if schumi would have snached some points from vettel, maybe alo would be 3 time world champion?
Now that is controversial
Quite possibly
Imagine Schumacher continue to racing till (at least) 2014 😞😔
That would be good
If you look on the video in the pinned comment I talk about just that!
I was at the Australian GP at the bend that schumacher got hit.
I even at the time happened to turn my camera on for a video at that exact time it happened.
That's cool!
It was really odd how many times he retired 2012. There are some driver errors as well but the car wasn't in his favour the whole season. There were many podiums or winning opportunity.
Of course but in those first 8 races all bar one was down to some kind of car failure. That's wild.
That is the sad thing about points history. It doesn't reflect having a bad car. So people dunk on Michael.
Indeed. Take all this into account and his 2012 was most impressive
Ohh I forgot, Happy belated birthday to Michael Schumacher because its an hour past midnight here. Hehe I should get some sleep..
Think about it. If F1 continued like way back when. Monza's top speed would be approaching 450 km/h. If not more, which would be lethal in potential crashes.
The Bonneville 400 test would've been pedestrian!
Now i need to see what if senna didn't lose his life and went through the whole season
Me too. I bet he would've been a formidable rival for Michael after the B-spec FW16 arrived.
The sport changes *so* much as the years go by. Regulations, engines, aero, weight, tires, new rules thst don't work and are withdrawn, and on and on and on. I think that's where Michael faltered. 4 years off, it must have been a struggle to adjust to all the changes.
I watched a race the other day from Round 1, it was either 2000 or 2005, and they were trying out a new rule where tires could not be changed the entire race. Not once. They had to make their tires last from start to finish. Bizarre... I don't know how long it lasted. Bit of a yoke.
Exactly. It changed so much that Michael was back to square one and for him to catch up in two year was impressive.
I think Michael's bad luck actually started at Suzuka 2006.
Them pesky engines.
Good day, Ladder man!
How was your new year?
It was good thank you. Hope yours was good.
MB spent zero money before 2011. BTW *_”ALL THE TIME YOU HAVE TO LEAVE A SPACE!”_* Best part is if you look at the clip Maldonado is spinning in the background.
hey! another 40 year old driver who did well was nigel mansell. Won a couple of races even.
Yep! That was great.
make a video like this for fernando in 2022 now that you mention it. didnt fernando say something like 70 points lost due to reliability.
It's certainly a decent follow up. I'll keep it in mind!
He wasn't just unlucky. He lost some touch, maybe after the bike crash because in the Mercede's years he keap entering inside others rear ends. He crashed way more often than Rosberg.
Sure he lost his utmost pace but the fact he was on top of the car in two years in his 40s showed he hadn't lost his core mojo.
@@LawVS a mid Schumacher still was a very good driver.
Schumacher desvered a lot more in 2012
He really did. He finally got the hang of the cars.
Happy birthday to the greatest driver ever
The true red baron
Definitely somebody who I'd love to see Max go up against.
@@LawVS Yesss good lord that would have been
awesome
You could also say the same for Hamilton that year as well
For sure. 2009 was also pretty bad.
This era bored me. I caught the end of Senna and McLaren and watching Michael start his career. Spa 92 👍.
The Sound!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where are the V12s and V10s
Sustainability.
Hey man
Hey
those were the days when teams could bin engines like mad man and still spend less than with these hybrid V8s
Actually costs are much less compared to those years, sure the engines are expensive but they are reliable so they don't need to replace it every now and then, also these are v6 engines not v8
It kinda shifted away in the 2010s. The late 2000s was when that peaked.
I’m pretty sure winter 2013 was his unluckiest season
Ouch.
I share a bday with Michael!
Neat!
Wish he stayed for 2013. I think he would've won again, and been able to retire on a high note.
He would've had a better chance of more podiums.
Sadly it seems like Micheal had used up most his luck at this point. He didnt even get to stay for 13 to reap the rewards of setting up the team and then the accident happened.
Remember Hakkinen walked away from the sport for tempting fate a few too many times and claiming that he will run out of luck if he continued.
I suppose so.
But Schumacher didn't have a very competitive car.
In the first half of 2012, the W03 WAS right up there but it fell away very quickly and by the second half it was barely able to score points. Michael had the tools to get podiums and a win but he had the broken car.
All based on the assumption that Schumacher was the only driver who had bad luck in 2012.
He had bad luck like many other drivers, including Hamilton.
Schumacher is a slow burner. This the medians of Schumacher vs Rosberg in Q:
2010: 0.283s slower than Rosberg
2011: 0.462s slower than Rosberg
2012: 0.049s faster than Rosberg
Had Schumacher hadn't quit in 2012, I believe he could have beaten Rosberg at least one in hybrid era.
Agreed. He needed two years to adapt to modern F1 practices of preserving components, not thrashing them to get ultimate performance.
=WELL,THAT *_RUST_* COULDNT BE TAKEN AWAY BC RULES WERE KINDA AGAINST MICHAEL JUST IN PERSON,THO......
.......BY THE WAY..........1ST OF ALL,IT'S KINDA UPSETTING THAT *MERCEDES WAS SHORT OF BUDGET* AND 2ND......IN FACT IF U DIDNT KNOW MICHAEL WAS HAVING AGREEMENT WITH MERCEDES SINCE 93-94,RIGHT???
.........AGREEMENT WAS ABOUT IF MERCEDES TO EVER DECIDE,MICHAEL TO JOIN THEM....RIGHT???????
...........SOOO,THERE WAS KINDA DOUBLE DOOM,DAMNIT
Mercedes weren't as trusting to begin with. It was only 2013 when Benz bought in more.
Michael should have stayed for 2013.
If he had the same reliability as Rosberg he would've been in the top 5 of the championship.
I hope you weren't counting the Spain race given that was his own fault.
Honestly Hamilton has a much better claim to the "What If" of 2012, loosing well over 100pts and the title to McLarens reliability problems and pitstop screwups.
I did count it, yes. Like I counted Malaysia and Bahrain.
Of course. At least he had an exit plan.
@@LawVS I disagree with that, there's no point to a "what if his car was reliable" scenario and then discounting driver mistakes as well, Maldonado has a claim to best driver on the grid at that point, and Bahrain definitely counts as it was a DRS failure that dropped him out of Q1.
Malaysia is a tricky one, while he was taken out of 3rd by a Grosjean shaped harpoon that race was the definition of chaotic and trying to guess where he would have finished is impossible.
Pretty sure ‘99 was a bit more unlucky don’t you? 🤨
He would have walked to that title if he hadn’t broken his leg.
I understand what you mean and it's certainly debatable.
LawVS could do better in 2012
schumi not winning monaco in 2012 was such a miss, even tho it was his fault
edit: and he blamed senna for it, jusst *facepalm*
Even his team knew Michael messed up
he probably knew too, at that point i reckon he was just frustrated with where he was that season
Surely his unluckiest season was ski season… 😢
Too soon
