Very one-sided view on corsets. Tight lacing was only something the very wealthy and fashionable did, not the every day working woman. In a properly fitted corset that is not laced too tight you can move around freely and it gives you the needed bust support. There were also special corsets for exercise, swimming, housework etc. which had no steel boning but only cording and were very soft and flexible. If you say corsets are torture than you most also say bras are torture and both would be wrong. They were normal undergarments that women wore everyday and for centuries and therefore they must have worked. Some were, like modern bras, only for special occasions were you wanted to look extra attractive.

Agreed. A lot of the critique against corsets came from men complaining about women “changing” their bodies too…

"wore everyday and for centuries and therefore they must have worked" - that's not a good thing to say though, the history is flooded with phenomena used for thousands of years that did not work, and made people suffer. Foot binding were also used for centuries.
It is true coursets were not dangerous unless they were tight laced. And it is true that it was the only thing you had to support the bust, and because of that reason, women wanted to wear it: they had few choices since there were no bra. However, the good support given to your back as not a good thing, it will weaken your own muscles. And it was far from only the upper classes who tight laced. It was in fact very common to tight lace. Women tight laced themselwes and their own daughters as children, because it was simply seen as the given thing to do if you wanted to fit in to the ideal of femininity, and it was painful and restrictive. You got used to it, and no longer saw it as restrictive that you could not breath as easy as a man, move as easy as a man, but that was not seen as a problem, because it was considered feminine. The ideal of femininity was extremely strong. No one had to force these women, they themselwes saw it as a given thing for a woman. If you did not wear a corset, you were seen as a "loose" (!) woman. Corset makers recomended corsets for female children and little girls and for women to wear corsets day and night. Employers demanded female store clerks to tight lace. There were medical illnesses noted to have occurred because of tight lacing.
Of course not everyone tight laced. But it was quite common. The was a reason the women of the dress reform movement battled the corset.

@@kimm.8800 There were sports corsets that had cording instead of boning and also some elastics later. Also working women corsets like the pretty house maid were a thing. How you describe it makes women from the past look dumb. They weren't. If the every day corset wear would have been too restrictive they would have changed things faster than they did. Corsets could support skirts which were often quite heavy and would have been really uncomfortable to just wear in the waist with the weight-distribution of the corset. Do you have sources to back the claim that corsets were bad for women's health? Because usually this misconception stems from ads or "science" of the time that claimed all sorts of things we now know is not factual. If you have credible sources for this, I'd be happy to read them.
The fashionable silhouette of a small waist was more often achieved with padding out bust and hips than lacing the waist tight.

Very ignorant and at times pure misinformation. So dissapointing to see that the demonizing of the corset still lives on, truly, the ridicule of womens fashion seems to be constant throughout history. Know that it was sexist men with no understanding of biology who are the reason we hate corsets today. Luckily the corset is coming back in popularity largely thanks to the forward thinking, late Vivienne Westwood. Remember that fashion cannot oppress, people do.

A wise man once said: never say never. Some fashion is opressive. Like the foot binding in china I would call opressive tho i will admit i could do more research

Very sad to see a person who wants one gender to be forced to wear a certain garment. Women in those daus had few choices.

I am happy that I do not have to wear a corset and I never will. Men do not have to, and I sure as hell hope the times when women have to wear corsets and men didn't have to will never come back. I prefer to be free as a man.
