  • @2HitWonder
    @2HitWonder Před 6 lety +45

    For all the chatter about this: Dennis would never want to do the amount of touring that Styx still does, it's really a moot point. He does his thing, and Styx does theirs. I saw them live in April and they were awesome. I think it's cool that they lightened their stance and did Roboto. The stageshow will not be brought back, haha.

    • @Supertron1
      @Supertron1 Před 6 lety +4

      I guess it was simply because Mr. Roboto was such a hit, considering Tommy and JY won't even play any of their own songs from that album, like Cold War, Haven't We Been Here Before, Heavy Metal Poisoning, or Double Life. Despite what happened with Dennis, many Styx fans still want to hear all of the hits and beloved favorites.

    • @2HitWonder
      @2HitWonder Před 6 lety +4

      Supertron5000 agreed. They seem very eager to give the live crowds exactly what they want. At the concert I went to they played one song from their last album and were almost apologizing for it. “We know you came to hear your favorite classics, but we are just going to play you one song from our current album, then back to your regular scheduled program”. Probably they went back to Roboto because the fans mostly want it.

    • @Supertron1
      @Supertron1 Před 6 lety +5

      Jason M. I suspect the people calling Tommy and JY hypocrites and thieves are simply still angry because they said on national TV they're not gonna bring back Dennis. Likely the closest they'll come to bringing him back is through bringing back some of his old ideas and songs. Admittedly, right now i can't imagine them playing Babe, Don't Let It End, or Show me the Way... But i couldn't have imagined them playing Mr. Roboto either.

    This is fucking incredible, and is a note-perfect rendition. Why did they wait 35 years to dust off what is one of the most underrated songs in the Styx canon? Sure, it's very attached to Dennis and his pet project, but so were other songs they've been playing with Gowan since '99.
    This just fills me with so much joy. "Mr. Roboto" was one of the first songs I downloaded off Napster when I was 20, and kicked off the beginnings of my 80s nostalgia when I bought Kilroy Was Here not long after.

      Gowan pulls it off so perfectly, no matter what anyone says. Rather than try to be DDY, Gowan just puts his own twist into every performance of DDY songs and it always sounds incredible. They should give "Haven't We Been Here Before" a makeover next, that song is one of the better Kilroy tracks and actually one of Tommy Shaw's best.

You guys that are constantly bitching about Dennis not being in the band anymore need to wake up. A reunion is never going to happen. And if you're a true fan, you really shouldn't wish for it to because there's bad blood between Dennis and Tommy/JY. I have to say, as someone who doesn't care for the current Styx line-up, and agrees with the guys who says Dennis's touring band is much better, They did a pretty good job here. I think eventually they're going to have to do something with Dennis, whether its a full reunion, have him sing on a song or two on an album (if they do another one. @mortisspellstone2906 Před 3 lety +1

      Having just watched Dennis’ version, the original version and this one, I’d say this is closer to the original that’s DeYoung’s. His is TBH a pretty cheesy performance and when it’s time for the highest note, I’m pretty sure it’s the female background singer that took it. Harmonies are better here as well.
      TBC, I’m not a diehard Styx, but I saw the Kilroy tour 2x (the last 2 NOLA shows, which were the 2 the filmed shows), which were excellent, and once on the arena tour (which was not great).
      That said, if they did it like they did on the theater show (which sadly is dramatically edited on the tour video), Cold War would be a good addition. For the theater leg, Tommy sat on the front of the stage and did a slow bluesy jam then got up and walked up the aisle stage left and jammed. I believe only the latter is in the video...and they added that borderline rap, which I don’t recall being done in any way shape or form live.

    Okay I definitely agree that this song is nothing like it was without Dennis DeYoung, but I feel like the actual music without the singing is still spot-on. Particularly the slow buildup keyboard intro. That was always the part that defined the song for me. So yes, it was not as good as it should have been, but I think it was still quite a good performance.

I have to admit it’s a little weird hearing Styx play live with a track, but in this isolated case it actually sounds quite amazing, and as long as they never start using a backing track on any of their other songs, it works for this one.

    Its too bad these disagreements had happened. Clearly, They are all very talented people, and have more in common , than not. Like the saying , “we are on the same team”, sometimes conflict happens, when outsiders would say, sad, too bad they are fighting... like in classic star trek , when the two black/ white characters were always fighting. To outside observers, like Kirk and Spock, it made no sense for them to fight. They had a lot in common and when Kirk pointed this out, one character loudly protested that he had NOTHING in common with that other guy .... Kirk looked puzzled and pointed out the obvious , that they both were black on one side and white on other.... the character said that his enemy was black on the opposite side !!! Kirk and spock looked absolutely surprised, and so do many of us when we see people like DDY and TS so strongly disagree. Jaw dropping. But we all make mistakes. It was a long time ago. We are wiser, they are playing Mr Roboto ( awesome tune) , I love Tommy Shaws tunes like Renegade and Angry. Young Man.... maybe they could make up before somebody dies and feels bad for never reconciling ... and who knows , maybe privately they have... life is too short ..... peace to all ... chris

      The current lineup of Styx had the band's highest charting album since Kilroy Was Here with The Mission. They've already demonstrated that they can make great new music without Dennis DeYoung in the band. They're just playing Mr. Roboto because their fans wanted them to.
      Using "defeat" to describe this is a bit misleading.

      @Lancerlady Před 6 lety +1

      Not really to each their own. Just because some fans wanted some new music from them but it wasn't that great. I listened to it. But couldn't get past the hypocrisy of them saying they wouldn't do concept albums and who is the first one who gets credit? Regardless they all make money off the old songs the sing..both sides of the fence.

    • @misterninetyseven2898
      @misterninetyseven2898 Před 6 lety +1

      This is precisely what a lot of people don't seem to understand. The problem with Kilroy wasn't the fact that it was a concept album. Its overbearing, operatic nature was the problem. The Mission is a return to the band's rock roots. Both are concept albums, yes. The question is which one is better, which one sounds more Styx-like. It wasn't just Tommy Shaw and James Young that didn't like Kilroy Was Here; it still gets flak from many a Styx fan to this day. Not because it was a concept album (and I might add that Paradise Theater, a well received and highly regarded Styx album which came out earlier, is a concept album), but because it just wasn't a good album. Simple.
      If you don't like The Mission, fine, you can go back to your childish Lawrence Gowan bashing. But a lot of Styx fans love The Mission, and have heralded it as a comeback to the band's original style, myself included. Recently Lawrence said another new album is possible too. They're on a roll here and I for one am glad that they're not slowing down.
      And at the end of the day. Dennis had his time with Styx and they benefited from it. But he's not in the band anymore. He's been out of the band for about 20 years I say let's stop beating the dead horse and move on

    • @misterninetyseven2898
