  • In this video, I show you how I used recycled straw braid to make a reproduction of a Regency summer bonnet!
This video is part of the #relaxedregency challenge hosted by RetroClaude, in which Costubers make regency fashions in a low-stress atmosphere on their own timeline.
This bonnet took me six months to make (October 2020 - March2021), and I'll be using it as a teaching sample for a lifelong learning lecture I'm giving in April 2021 as part of a series on Regency fashion for Jane Austen fans.

This was very helpful for me as I've been experimenting with sewing straw hats. I loved the braided stripe inserts and I can't believe it never occurred to me that there are special sewing machines for straw!

So far as I know, the ones still in operation are all antiques. I’ve worked at two shops that had one, and I have two friends who are milliners who own them. I have a search on eBay for them and I occasionally get notifications for listings, but they always start around $600.
