  • www.acbestpractices.com - The first in a three part series on creating custom objects for the ArchiCAD library. (The second one may be viewed at • ArchiCAD Tutorial | Ma... - the third one will be posted next week.)
These tutorials are excerpted from my comprehensive ArchiCAD training resource, the Best Practices Course - www.acbestpractices.com
In this 16 minute video, we look at how to create a basic 2D symbol as well as a quick way to save a new 3D object. The basic process is simple: draw or model whatever you'd like to turn into an object, select these elements on the floor plan, then use the File menu - Libraries and Objects - Save Selection As - Object command and give the new object a name.
After a new object is created, it can be made more flexible by adding parameters and editing the GDL script to make it more parametric, allowing it to change with each instance or insertion into the project.
The hotspots or selection handles of new objects are created automatically by ArchiCAD, and by default will include the bounding box corners and geometric center of the element. To optimize these handles, simply draw in your own hotspots on the plan with the hotspot tool, then select these hotspots along with the 2D or 3D elements when you are creating the object.
When you have hotspots included in the selection, you may turn off the bounding box handles by unchecking the Details - Compatibility Options - Bounding Box Hotspots checkbox, then resaving the object. (Note: if you have an object already placed, you may not see the updated symbol until you refresh the view by zooming in or out.)

I sketched a simple rectangle with a text inside but when I change the dimensions of the my object also distorts the text!....I wonder what I am doing wrong.... Your help would be precious to me.... Thank you in advance..

    Awesome Eric! Thanks a lot!
I have a questionEric, is it posible to make the text in the object able to have free movement around the object?

    • @EricBobrow
      @EricBobrow  Před 4 lety

Carlos - It is possible to make the text moveable, however it takes some very precise GDL coding to create the offset parameters and tie them into an editable / stretchable hotspot. I've done it on occasion, it always takes me a while to figure it out again from the manual, since I don't do it often.

    Hi there Eric!
I am working in an Architectural firm that will soon switch to Archicad.
We are trying to figure out things before we start.
    My question is this:
Let' assume you have the same window repeated 12 times on a building.
You create the window as an object and add it to the Library.
Then you place that object on the 12 different locations.
If for some reason we decide to change the window type
(let's assume that wall opening remains the same),
what is the way to change them all together?
Go to the library and change the saved object?
Will that change all the 12 windows?
Since this is something that often has to be done in projects, what is the procedure?
Have you done a tutorial about this subject?
    Thank you in advance,
    Antony

Hello, my name is Kevin i am an Architecture studying, recently I've been using ARCHICAD 18 to make my college work, but i have a several problems and i don't find any answers on the web. I've been trying to change the settings of the "audience seats layout" from the object library but i cant change them at all, it always stay in the default setting no matter what i do, the only thing i can do is change the number of seats!! And the same thing happen with a lot of other things, like walls, i can't change them to "non-load bearing element or load-bearing element" they keep on "undefined" no matter how many times i change it they always go back to the default.. PLEASE HELP ME, i am so desperate...
