I was raised in Renovo, PA, a small railroad town in adjoining Western Clinton County 52 miles northwest of Williamsport. I was born in the Williamsport Hospital and just about all of our medical and dental providers were in Williamsport so it was no big deal to just drive that hour to access them. Also, two of my three siblings were also born in the Williamsport Hospital so I guess my parents didn't mind driving the hour when it was time for the babies to arrive. There was a very prominent and even famous obstetrician, Dr. Nutt who had a very busy clinic there along with, I think, his brother who was also an obgyn. I remember Christmas shopping downtown which was a busy, bustling, festive place, packed with hurried shoppers and decorated for the Holidays along with the shops of that era, including the two department stores, L.L. Stearns & Sons and The Carroll House. It was a different time and place.
It felt kind of weird that there were virtually no people on these streets the narrators walked in this video. I think they did say it was a Sunday but, still, it's clear that Williamsport, along with hundreds of towns and small cities all over the country are shadows of their former selves.

I'm not from Central PA, but my boyfriend was raised in Williamsport. We often wander around downtown and rarely see more than 10 to 12 people. Like you, the area brings back a lot of memories of what once was. One of the goals of this channel is to visit as many of these small towns as possible before they fade away completely. I grew up in Philadelphia, so I was definitely a city girl, but I love the vibe of small-town America. Thanks for watching, and please check back now and then!

I briefly attended Lycoming College in the late 70s. I didn't like the school for a number of reasons, and I transferred to a university in Washington, D.C.
However, I found the town to be quite interesting. I often escaped the campus and explored downtown Williamsport, and I enjoyed speaking to some of the locals. The town had clearly seen better days and was somewhat depressed, but the residents went about their business with friendly attitudes. One thing that struck me at the time was the lack of a very strong relationship between the college and the town. I knew a few students who did internships in Williamsport, and a few had part-time jobs, but there was a definite unspoken separation between the college and the rest of Williamsport. It might be different now. I'd like to go back, but I'm going to have to be content with your video in the meantime. Thanks for posting this.

      Hi William,
People are still quite friendly in Williamsport. I'm from Philadelphia and what I like so much about small towns like Williamsport, is how everyone says hello to each other. : )
I'm thinking that there's still sort of a separation between the college students and the townspeople. Sort of shame
      Thank you for watching!

I grew up in nearby Jersey Shore, PA (and still come back to the Williamsport/State College region). Really nice video, and makes me feel at home again. A shame you skipped over the Community Arts Center-one of Pennsylvania’s finest theaters!

I watched again last night. If you get back to the post office/city hall building on 4th street (near the sun-gazette) you can see gargoyles on some of the corners of the towers of the building. The sun building was also a city bus stop and I spent many times as a little kid looking at the "monsters" and wondering why they were on the building. The Hiawatha paddle-wheel boat went on the river in the early 80s i think.

I am in Williamsport now visiting my daughter. I may just have to check out the monsters. ...lol...unfortunately I didn't bring my camera with me. I'll have to do another Williamsport town walk. I really like it here. I'm thinking it must have been a wonderful place to grow up. Thank you for watching, my friend!

Williamsport had (& has...) many famous people - some Hollywood folks - live there, or stay there over the last century.
Very nice place to visit, with lots of great places to eat when I've gone ❤😊

Hi Jen, Yeah, Kathryn Hepburn spent a LOT of time in Williamsport and the surrounding area. She had friends there she stayed with many times.
In Salladsburgh at the old Cohick's store, she had a stool with her name on it at the lunch counter.
I used to set on it as a kid, lol 😂❤
