    I remember when I was in chess camp something like 15-20 years ago, my teacher was showing all of us how to use an engine (back then of course they were still very strong, but a shadow of what they are today). So he gave a position to an engine, and he also had to input how long the computer was allowed to think. So he gave the computer a position, let it think for 2 seconds, then gave it the same position and let it think for 10 seconds. Then he gave the computer a minute or two and the whole time was saying how the computer would probably give the same answer because it was a very straightforward position.
    The computer came back and gave a very different move that didn't look possible. The teacher looked at where the line went and just said something along the lines of "Oh, well, I guess that works. The computer found something better."
    Like, holy shit. Even back then on our shitty classroom Windows XP the computers were being absolute scumbags.

    I don't see how chess cheaters could feel any sense of accomplishment from cheating, most especially when they're at high ELOs. Imagine playing for weeks/days/hours just to get to 1000+ ELO by cheating, and by the time you get to a higher ELO, it's easier to notice whether you're cheating, then you get subsequently banned, wasting your weeks/days/hours of sitting through matches while the AI engine thinks for you.
    Also, I was thinking if players with 2000+ ELOs should have their cameras open everytime they play with each other, just so it's easier to weed out those who are cheating at high ELOs, because there is no way those cheaters would even want the world to see their faces while cheating.

      I agree with you, but you and I think with the mind of someone who doesn't cheat. Cheaters think differently. My guess is that they are weak but sadistic. The point is not them winning, but the other one losing. The higher the rating of the opponent the more satisfying it gets. And then they play the last couple of moves themselves to give the final blow, because it is very satisfying to them to kick someone who is already on the ground. Sad.

      Don't you get 1000 elo right away? At least I thought so because it was basically my starting level(ok, I could beat any bot up to 1000 elo right away, and 1000 elo after couple of games, so I guess 1000 should be like zero level for adults, right?)

      Cheaters find all sorts of ways to justify cheating. They might think of cheating as temporary, something that will help teach them to become a better player over time and eventually they will no longer need to cheat. They might convince themselves that everybody else is cheating and that is why they are losing matches, and that them cheating is merely levelling the playing field. When there is prize money on the line or prestigious titles often cheaters manage to convince themselves that they deserve to win and are in fact the better player, but for reasons beyond their control they can't win without cheating - the cheating is justified because that's what they have to do to get what they feel like they deserve. Most cheaters are also convinced they're smart enough to get away with it indefinitely so they're not even considering the possibility they will get banned for cheating and have all they did be for nothing.
      I believe most cheaters when they win would feel a sense of accomplishment, simply because they believe that cheating was justified and they deserved to win. And I think that applies to basically everything too - like when you hear about athletes taking performance enhancing drugs they almost always say the reason they decided to do it is because they believe all their competition is doing it and it was required to be on an even playing field, or they felt it was required due to being set back by an injury outside of their control. They might express regret and whatnot after being caught, but almost without fail they will all basically justify their behaviour in some way and it's clear that what they actually regret is being caught, not cheating.
      As for the idea of having a webcam on for high rated chess players - I personally hate the idea. I would not be willing to do that, even if it helped address the cheating problem. I hate cheating as much as the next guy, but I also hate being on camera and simply would rather not play chess than stream myself playing chess. I don't think that is a solution people would go for.

    There's nothing to gain from cheating in chess. You can't do it in an otb situation. There's no monetary gain. If you cheat in chess, you know you're not as smart as any of your opponents, so you're basically just putting yourself down and admitting that you aren't very bright. Man, their lives must really suck

Maybe different modes for how many cheat moves or how many moves ahead it calculates.

      @@PanicoMight no not by a long shot. I'm not saying these moves where made by humans, I'm merely curious to how quick the machine does it. Maybe they dont need a great deal of depth for it to work since a human is not using its full "depth" potential as it is in bullet speed?

    • @PanicoMight
      @PanicoMight Před měsícem

      @@oivindification All right, got it! To put on perspective, imagine that a human try to think the most possible moves ahead in a fraction of a second and he play what he think is the most optimal move. In a fraction of a second, a computer can think in all possible moves and he will give you the move they will win at the end even it the move look bad. You can look for stockfish to understand better how the better chess engine works. The longer you give to stockfish, more depth he will get but whit a good processor they don't need much time to analyze every possible scenario
