Trump, Pence and McConnel about went into cardiac arrest. I'll always remember John McCain for doing the right thing for millions of Americans. It is sad that this was demonized by some politicians and especially Fox News. They all have great insurance and probably don't pay a dime and the nerve of them to turn hatred towards President Obama and not give a damn about people who needed health insurance and issues with pre-existing conditions. I also remember, way back when he was running against the then fellow Senator Obama, him being in a town hall, when one of member of the audience, an older middle age woman, begain her complaint against Sen. Obama, by, iirc, stating that he "is an Arab, and not a family man, and ...", but whilst in mid-sentence, Sen. McCain gently took the microphone away from her. His reply ...? "No, ma'am. He is an American, and a decent family man, with whom I only have major disagreements about policy on." ...
In other words, despite being President Obama's then political opponent, he was only his opponent on policy ... and nothing else. John McCain, for all his faults, showed what decent Republicans could be like, by 'steelmaning' his opponent, and not by bismirching them with smears, and stupid rhetoric. Although John McCain was more to the right than I am, given the choice, he was one of the few Republicans I would happily vote for. I only wish that Sen. McCain was now President, if it had to be a Republican, rather than President Trump ...

Depending on what limits you may set yourself, that very well may be true ...
Sometime ago, an elderly lady, living next door in a small studio apartment, much like mine, and all on this floor, in this shared, six story, housing block, died. As a neighbour, I kinda got on well enough with Pam, to the point we could have not only rather pleasant conversations, but also to where she invited me in, especially to see her cat, whom tended to dislike the few visitors she did have, but somehow he took a liking to me ...
Trouble is, she had had a pretty tough life, especially being alienated from her, eventually deceased parents, but also her two other sisters. Unfortunately, she carried that acrimonism across, and, whilst she was always amicable towards me, she had a habit of speaking her mind aloud, that can, and did, came across as passive aggressive. But, as I only saw her occasionally, that I didn't see her for a while, especially when I was working a full time job, for which I had to get up at 5am, and often didn't get home until 6.30pm, wasn't surprising.
So it came as a real shock to hear from a fellow neighbour, that lives a floor above, tell me she (Pam) was hospitalized with an aggressive form of stomach cancer; in fact, so aggressive, she died in only a matter of a few weeks (methinks is was two-three months, but I could be very wrong ... ) after she was admitted into hospital.
But because she was the way she was, only that neighbour -- and the neighbour's daughter -- and myself, attended her funeral. She had no husband/partner, and no children. And her two remaining sisters just sent a joint bouquet, in lieu of attending. It was by far the strangest, eeriest, sadiest, and tragic (in every, and all, senses of those two last words) funeral I have ever attended, and I have lost count of how many I have attended. Yes, she was cremated, and, no, have no idea where here ashes went, but even my mum's funeral/burial, from hearse, directly to her grave, was far 'better', with ten people, including myself, and the Church Elder, from which he belonged to, and whom acted as the Celebrant, than Pam's funeral was. Even the poor Vicar, whom acted as Pam's Celebrant, could only do so, being as he was the hospital's Chaplain ... and even he struggled to word a eulogy about her ...
The TL; DR is that, sadly, your words ring pretty truer than people actually think ...
[Side note: a true skill of an actor is being able to portray a character as such complete villain, that just saying that character's name can cause upset, and vilification ... think Joffrey from 'Game of Thrones' ...]

I am wondering why one of the McCain staffers didn't pull Jared and Ivanka aside and politely say 'please leave...your presence is not wanted at this occasion, you are not welcome'. It's a family event. The Trumps were not paying out of pocket for it.

My ex brought his girlfriend, my former best friend from the time I was 17 years old, (my marriage fell apart when I was 40) someone who I loved like a sister until I found out about her and my husband to my fathers funeral after I expressly told him that he was welcome for the sake of the kids, but she was not. He told me a funeral isnt a birthday, that she didnt need to be invited to pay her final respects to my father! Some people have no class.

I’m a lifelong Democrat and a Liberal. I live in DC, and even though I did not agree with his politics I went to pay my respects when John McCain was lying in state at the Capital. It was a miserably hot day in DC, as they can be, and like us all the Red Cross vastly underestimated the size of the crowd, the amount of bottled water that was needed, the length of the line and time we had to wait (over 3 hours) just get through the line outside and into the building. Still we all stayed. Military in full dress uniform, Vietnamese holding signs thanking him for helping to end the war, and I discovered some Liberals like myself in line out of admiration for a man of patriotism, principles and courage.
I'm not a Republican but I've always respected John McCain. He endured 5 years of torture. He could leave his father was an Admiral but refused to leave without his men.
I know that I may be condemned for this but just maybe Ivanka and Jared were
not there to spy or for publicity.

Having just watched a bunch of videos of McCain defending Obama and Obama's eulogy, I think that the feelings you speak of should be embraced as natural. You can respect someone yet at the same time think that person has absolutely ridiculous views at the same time. It's the way things *should* be. You don't have to *either* love or hate everybody.

I m an African American liberal maybe at this point would never vote for John Mcain but when he passed I felt for the family so funny how we fight our whole lives for causes and with others and debate but we die all of us die we lose people and you look back and say well I can appreciate that person respect that person even though we did not agree. Perhaps call me crazy, but I personally think that, even if I fundamentally disagree with someone, both politically, and philosophically, but still is, at heart, says, and acts, as a decent human being, with grace, mercy, compassion, understanding, and, yes, even magnanimity, then that person should be treated in a like manner, especially at their passing.
It reminds me of that time, not long after, here in the UK, a former Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, died. Yes, she was a very divisive, and derisive, political figure, especially through the policies that she enacted as part of her being Prime Minister. Depending on whom you ask, she was either the best Prime Minister we have had since Winston Churchill ... or, perhaps, the very worse.
But whilst I disagreed with her on almost, practically speaking, everything, to hear people singing "Ding, Dong, the Wicked Witch is Dead", from 'The Wizard of Oz', I, personally, found, not only distasteful, but crass, and disgusting. Having, just very recently, myself, lost an elderly mother, I can, kinda, relate to how her children must have felt: I knew she was ill, for sometime, but she was just as ill before, yet fully recovered from that disabling bout of 'flu. Her sudden death, practically overnight, is a shock which, almost three months later, I am still trying to comprehend. For me, seeing her wicker basket coffin, being lowered into the ground, was so surreal, it didn't feel like it was happening, hence a total numbness ...
But like Meghan McCain, my mum's eventual memorial service, that will happen in time, given the restrictions that are in place governing how funerals are conducted at the present, it would be one whereby if any one I know personally that my mum didn't want to be there, actually turned up, it would be pretty upset about that ...
At what point, in our collective history of humanity, did we forget the idea, and ideal, of dignity ...?

If you talk to real life normal conservatives you realize why it’s not as crazy as it sounds. They believe that life begins at conception and that abortion is murder (don’t shoot the messenger guys). And they also believe you can protect your life or somebody else’s life against an evil person by packing heat to deter them from harm. I have to say last year I was robbed at knifepoint in a parking lot right next to my car. I gave the jerk the cash that was on me because I didn’t have my wallet and he then ran away. I was shaking like a leaf the whole time and cried for a bit when I got home. And honestly while I was getting robbed I wish I had a hand gun on me. Life is way more nuanced than partisan politics.

I've lost my mother, my father, my younger brother, my son, my uncles and aunts and my grand mothers and grand fathers. After having attended all or most of those funerals...one thing remains a constant. Having to face a future without them. I felt for the family as I do any family who goes through this. Just having the courage to carry takes a lot.
There are no words for what you have had to go through. For what it’s worth, from a stranger who sees you, I’m sorry for your loss. Much love. ❤

I am so sorry for her loss as a daughter because her dad seemed like a wonderful father. I did not agree with his politics but he was a wholly decent man. I just need her to achieve something in her life that is not because of who her dad was.
