- Should have mentioned Logan on Stormrider can get increased dmage on the charge with Thunderwolves. Could be a big deal against the right target.

Helbrecht can also get a +1 damage in melee if he is leading the sword brethren, especially powerful with his sweep profile.

And every night I pray for a new night lords line of minis. No the kill team does not count. Just because you can use them to kitbash night lords doesn’t mean my boyz in midnight clad suddenly have the same treatment as the thousand sons or the world eaters. You’d have to buy like 6 of those kill teams anyways just to make an army which is frankly not worth the money.
The fact that in the codex flesh tearers have a chapter master and other founding chapters only got a captain as a character is wild.
Yeah. I love Gabriel Seth but even I think it’s wild that flesh tearers get a unique chapter master model but meanwhile Tu’Shan, a character who has had 3 books focusing on him to my knowledge AND is best bros with Dante doesn’t have a model.
As an iron warrior I say count your blessings 😂

One relevant thing about Helbrecht that you didn't mention is that his base is HUGE. Helps get more of your guys in the fight, which for a melee focused unit is a strange but great buff.
Also. I pair helbrecht with sword brethren. They give +1 damage or +1 attack. So really helbrecht has 6 attacks, hitting on 2s (5,6 auto wounding) strength 9, ap -3, 4 damage attacks. Jump into a big group. Spend a cp to give him precision and he’ll murder pretty much anything. His mortal wounds are spicy and that big base is great. For more in engagement.

@@calvin4912 The Epic Challenge strategm. It's a core strategm, so any army can use it.
The fact that Dante is the cm of the melee focused space marines, and only has a 2 dmg attack, is wild.
He's supposed to embed in a unit as a leader that's why, if you stick him in Sang Guard he gets -1 to hit & -1 to wound vs Melee attacks against him and he gives his unit +1 to hit (including himself).
With 8 attacks plus all of that AND more flat damage he would be completely busted.
Tabletop Crunch =/= Lore Fluff.

@@rankcolour8780 But his Leadship ability sucks, It's only a +1 to hit and charge (and the fact that that's all he gets for his, I rule half the imperium, ability, is insulting), and the SG buff only applies while the unit is alive. SG aren't that good now anyways. So ya, Dante ain't doing good right now compared to other Chapter Masters.
@@johnaxios6335 unit abilities work both ways so he picky up any unit abilities from a unit he leads so it's not a case of looking at what he does it's about looking at the rules for the unit he leads as well.
I'm assuming you know how to tell model and unit rules apart?

It's a massive oversight. It's not like salamanders don't have enough popularity.
Templars player: always run Helbrecht in sword brethren. Lethal hits on 5+ and the sword bretheren buff him back as their extra damage or extra attack is on the unit. Brutal.
Add a Lieutenant with Tbones and watch your opponents cry when the Lion kills 2 of them max and they can fight on death (on a 3+) for 1 CP.

When leading Thunderwolves Logan Grimnar gets +1 damage on the charge, this makes his sweep attack pretty good against Space Marines and boosts the Flurry of Teeth and Claws attack too.
Stormrider’s large oval base also makes it really easy to get the TWC he’s leading into combat which is otherwise a huge issue for them.
@@UnnamedEagle I literally came here to state this. Getting units into melee when he's leading them is extreamly easy and imo one of his best features. Sadly a wolf lord on thunder wolf IMO just does a better job leading a squad.
Hadn't considered that - that is a pretty big deal! Will try and make a mention of it when I finally do a proper Space Wolves army video for 10th. Hopefully should be soon!
@@auspextactics It goes further in that a battle leader is normally given to the squad turning all attacks into lethal hits.
@@darkgeargaming1564 Battle Leader also lets you take Hunter’s Instincts in the Stormlance Detachment if you feel inclined to put the Stormrider unit in Strategic Reserves, and the once per game D6 move can be huge.
Despite having two named heroes, it's odd that Salamanders don't have a Tu'Shan model.
Vulkan He'stan should be promoted to Chapter Master with a new primaris model, he absolutely deserves it!

Obviously you have no idea about Salamanders. He'Stan has a very special mission to accomplish. We have a mighty Chapter Master in Tu'Shan. Even Dante recognizes him as a great Chapter Master.
Pedro Kantor is seriously underrated. His buffs on a unit of Sternguard make them incredibly deadly and they've become my favourite unit in 10th edition.
Toss a lieutenant in that squad and you got some incredible firepower

I'm loving my Kayvaan. While I'm running the Vangaurd, redeploying with my phobos captain, doing lieutentant shoot n moves, and a warsuit that keeps them busy, my opponents seem to forget I have him in deep strike. Dropping him and 5 jump intercessors behind lines, using rapid ingress, at 13" all they can do is stare. Then comes the mortal wounds change.
He is pretty cool. I think assault jump intercessors have grenade too. So you can do a double whammy grenade + mortals from the charge
Deep strike is a way of life in the sneaky beaky brigade. They always forget us ;)
We need Iron Hands Chapter Master ASAP! Master of the Forge Malkaan Feirros or Kardan Stronos.. But yes for our High Marshal Helbrecht!!
I'd argue for a Kristos model over a Feirros one, since we already have a model for Feirros and I'd like to take multiple Epic Heroes in one list. Kristos canonically has a lot of cool abilities (at least, as of the 2nd book) and would definitely make for an interesting tabletop character. Kardan Stronos though, I'd go insane if GW made one. Need more love for the Xth

Iron Hands elect their Chapter Master, currently it‘s Kardan Stronos who fits the role.
Iron Hands Chapter Masters can‘t decide over the Legion alone, they need the approval of the Iron Council, that consists of 43 members, 40 Iron Fathers (4 of each clan company), the Master of the Forge aka the leading Techmarine of the Iron Hands, the Chapter Master and 1 Representative Techpriest of the Admech.

Something else I miss about 9th edition is the ability to make a generic captain a chapter master.
It felt great to be able to make a homebrew chapter and actually field a chapter master. Like, with the rules to match and everything.
Alas, list building was apparently too hard for the people who could never make it past a 3rd grade reading level and now all flavour and fluff is gone.

Helbrecht is a god of war when he’s leading sword brethren. His sword goes to damage 4! Or damage 2 with 12 attacks on horde mode!
Are you sure Sword Brethren’s ability applies to the attached leader? I didn’t think abilities went in that direction. Usually an ability that affects attached units is spelled out more clearly.
If this is true, I’ve been missing out on a major damage buff!
@reavern it does indeed work both ways, the buff applies to the entire unit including helbrecht. Turning his sweeps into damage 2 makes him absolutely blend up other space marines.

My Black Templars have been dominating our games versus their Orks and Tyranids armies, so my friends have been borrowing my armies to be more competitive, using my Death Guard or World Eaters armies. Only Daemon Primarchs are tough enough to oppose Helbrecht with Sword Brethren. Damage 4 strikes should make their duels more equal.
Also, I should probably go back to using the Accept Any Challenge vow for Sustained Hits to increase the potential number of wounds at D4. I’ve been using UtHotE and Tannhauser’s Bones on a Castellan to give Helbrecht’s Sword Brethren unit greater survivability against those Daemon Primarchs… but sometimes the best defence is a strong offence!
@reavern I mix up the vows quite a bit, do still like the 6 up fnp army wide though, then add a lieutenant for lethal hits and can stratagem into sustained aswell if needed. Sometimes its overkill anyway, I play against a friends guard army a lot and they even cut through his tanks in combat with lethal and the double thunderhammer in the unit.
Imperial Fists need Lysander to be promoted. They’ve had three Chapter Masters in the space of about thirty years in lore. Vladimir Pugh, Vorn Hagen, Gregor Dessian. None have any real lore presence.
Mostly because the Imperial fists don't really have lore presence as much as their successor chapters do, or are as likable in my opinion.
So there’s nothing lost by promoting Lysander.

@@mk-ultraviolence1760 Its a real shame. They're my second favourite legion, but have lost a lot of character as a chapter and GW seems to enjoy neglecting them. I think if they had more lore presence, more people would appreciate them
@@LysimedVenteel It's baffling to me that they made the VII legion the poster boys of HH2.0 while keeping them almost entirely out of the setting in 40k. If they wanted to synchronize 2E with the Siege of Terra novels so badly, they should have just picked the Blood Angels. As it were, we have had more VII legion praetor in tartaros armor models than we have modern Fists characters in 40k.

Yay! Thank you for the GK Kaldor Draigo inclusion. That guy practically solo'd a World Eaters Daemon Prince for me in one game.
My first game with GK was immediately after 6th came out, before any decent FAQs came out and Heralds of Tzeentch could just spontaneously turn into greater daemons for free. He killed two Bloodthirsters and a Keeper of Secrets by himself in three consecutive assault phases. He's great now, but he used to be completely nuts.
Chapter Masters need to take the reigns for 40k. Primarchs are amazing, but it quickly becomes a battle over Primarch v Primarch in Chaos v Astartes. I miss when it was space marines against the odds, fighting monstrous beasts with just their strength and determination.

"look at this insanely powerful, enhanced super soldier. Now imagine a universe where this level of power only JUST allows him to survive, and in the grand scheme of things is quite low on the power scale."
Now it's become too Heresy era, everything is Primarch Vs Primarch, God Vs God. There's very little attention shown to humanity and it's best warriors' fight against the dying of the light.
@@spaghettimkay5795 I play Sisters mainly because they're one of the few armies without big and sometimes mandatory pieces.
Funny thing is, they do sometimes give other characters other than primarchs the spotlight. It's just not the Chapter Masters. For instance Lord Solar Leontus was featured very prominently in recent lore fighting against impossible odds but not any Chapter Masters. I think that last time a Chapter Master took center stage with minimal primarch presence was Dante during the Devastation of Baal.

I like black templars because they’re basically that, no primarch or even psykers, just sheer will power and fury.
I like ultramarines or Dark angels but i prefer way more those founding or successor chapters which have to stand on their own without the primarch on the back.
I wanted to make a dark angel force for example but now that they got The Lion you can’t really imagine them without him.
I almost always field Kantor when I play my Crimson Fists. While I can't say he's been the linchpin of my plans, I've never been sad that I took him.

Thanks for the video! A few notes: First off, Helbrecht costs 95 not 105 points. And, I am pretty sure 90% of the time, he is leading Sword Brethren, not Crusader Squads. Their synergies with Helbrecht are just insane. 5 PSB with Lt and Helbrecht can easily kill a Titan or 10 Termis in one round. Helbrecht alone has 6 D4 or 12 D2 attacks with them. Plus his mortal wounds, plus lethals and sustained. On a 5+.
I find it amazing how Helbrecht is always undervalued by everone outside of the BT community, but for all of 10th edition, you easily find him in 50% of BT lists to this day. No other chapter master comes close to this continuity.
And he’s giving those Sword Brethren critical hits on 5+. I’ve actually been banned from bringing Helbrecht leading Sword Bros to friendly games with my 40K group. They were sick of them just melting anything they were aimed at 😂
I think this can also be connected to the fact that lore wise Helbrecht isn’t that much of a fighter but more a commander, so a lot of misunderstanding in terms of rules when it comes to translate the lore into the tabletop.

@@tanaka601 Interesting. Definitely possible. Although, that's no excuse for Auspex ;). I got the impression that Auspex is really only thinking about combining Helbrecht with the Primaris Crusader Squads, he has mentioned that combo multiple times. It's definitely a good combo, but with Sword Brethren, it's a match made in heaven and much more conventient to use. I don't get why Auspex seems to ignore it ^^
@@peterkroger4311 yeah outside our community there’s a lot of underestimating and lack of focus in my opinion.
I always run crusader squads with grimaldus or at least a chaplain because that is the infantry blob you always need, if you want to hit hard you have to combine a good melee character with sword bros(i’ve seen also people using bladeguards but sword brethren is just too op at the moment) so helbrecht or a judiciar/marshal, but again here you would be basically sleep on Helbrecht since he is too good to be left out.

Pedro Kantor has the "Imperial Fists" keyword, so he does not lock you out of characters to the same extent Kayvaan Shrike does (meaning Darnath Lysander and Tor Garadon are available for picking)
Cant believe you left out the best most supreme Chapter Master of them all, Lugft Huron, Chapter Master of the Astral Claws, Tyrant of Badab, Ruler of the Maelstrom, Huron Blackheart
Azrael is just dumb, most of my lists start with him and a unit for him to lead. He's a great support piece for the extra CP, back line defender and late game finisher. Hi's gun is also quite dumb, sometimes doing 4x2 devastating wounds to something critical in the later turns is really powerful.
I'm surprised that there has not been a model for the chapter masters for the White Scars with Jubal Kahn, The Iron Hands with Kardan Stronos, Gregor Dessian for the Imperial Fists, or Tu'Shan for the Salamanders. Let's hope someday these guys will get there models and there days to shine with the rest of the chapters.
Relevant thing to note about Grimnar’s CP ability: RAW you can resolve attack by attack to ensure Grimnar gets to try at the final swing on a unit.
RAW, even if you decide to slow-roll your attacks, it can be a little trickier than that practically speaking, due to the Shooting & Fight phase rules which forbid players from making attacks with new weapon profiles until all attacks with identical weapon profiles have been made(you can find that rule I'm speaking of under paragraph 3 of the Fight rules under the "Make Attacks" section).
To give a practical example, if you had Logan Grimnar leading a unit of 5 Terminators all equipped with Powerfists then during the Fight phase you could either:
-Attack with your Powerfists and then use Logan's Axe of Morkai profile.
-Or you could start with Logan's Axe of Morkai profile and then make your Powerfist attacks afterwards.
-But you *cannot* attack with a couple of Powerfist attacks, then switch to the Axe of Morkai, and then go back to rest of your Powerfist attacks. Even if you slow rolled the first couple of Powerfist attacks attacks, that would still be an illegal move as per the rule I mentioned above.
If the unit of Terminators had say 3 Powerfists(A) and 2 Chainfists(B) instead of 5 Powerfists, then you could do either A->B->C(Axe of Morkai being C) or A/C/B, B/A/C, B/C/A, C/A/B, or C/B/A. But again, you can never do something like A1(first Powerfist)->B1(first Chainfist)->C1(Axe of Morkai)->A2(2nd Powerfist).
I hope I explained that well enough.
Considering Logan's Axe is a Khorne axe forged to kill Psykers - in lore - I really feel it should at least have a 4+ anti Psyker rule. I'd rather it be a 3+, mostly because 2+ feels too greedy. But I'd be willing to settle. Be cool if it also got special rules against psykers or it had innate Devastating wounds or something. Either way, I love running him.
We don't need any additional punishment for the psyker keyword that already offers zero benefits.
@@ElCedrico94 lol That's fair, I've been saying since the edition came out, Psyker is just a debuff. Since basically any ability a Psyker can do - outside very few case - another model could get without Pysker.

4 start for big Dante seems very generous considering Sang Guard sucks and if you want a big melee threat in BA you'd run either a Jump Chaplain or Lemartes with Death Company
people are running sang priest + jump captain with van vets at the moment, dante being swapped in is still really nice
@notvkn why are people choosing van vets over jump intercessors? I put my Van Vets to the side knowing the more time I waste on them the more likely GW are going to release new models with none of the Weapon options. I'm running my captain and sang priest with jump pack intercessors for the cost and the mortal wounds charge
Giving Dante that and Seth his is mental. Seth tbh is much better on the board than Dante. The guy is a fucking nutribullet in the right unit with the right strat

@@notvkn I've tried so many variants with Dante + the Priest and the list just always feels lacking somehow.
Kaldor + 10 Terminators is the lynchpin of my competitive lists, you are guaranteed to get rid of any one thing off them that turn that teleport in, and they're so hard to kill off entirely, giving the narthecium a chance to keep them at healthy numbers, a teleporting sledgehammer of beauty
I run Crimson Fists and Pedro Kantor pared with Tactical Squad works. With Anvil Siege Force, I have a thematic combo of Tactical Squad with Plasma Gun, Missile Launcher, and Sergeant with Plasma Pistol and Power Fist, lead by Pedro Kantor and an Ancient with the Stoic Defender enhancement. (OC never goes to zero and 6+ feel no pain for the unit while on objective) Have them in a Rhino for protection as they go up the board, or have them on home objective with a Dreadnought for reroll hit rolls of one. With accurate, flexible shooting, Pedro's abilities, and death by punches if something charges the unit, for the games I played with this unit setup, I've not lost them yet.
When playing raven guard shrike is great for doing actions and moving around easily. Also have Calgar for when i want to run large bricks of aggressors when going blueberries. Its also lame that Imperial fists and salamanders are missing their chapter master models
I think Codex Space Marines needs a datasheet for "Chapter Master" basically an Captain but with a few stat options, and some unique wargear loadout options. Think of enhancements, I think that'd be really cool for anyone who runs a successor chapter.
More chapters deserve their Chapter Masters on the table (and White Scars need a new chapter master xD)
They need to put Jubal Khan in a Dreadnought. We have K'sarro, I have K'sarro. I like his model I like his lore, but compared to someone like Shrike or even Seth he's wanting for flavor as the only white scars model available
@@Wesson42 yes and no, Whote Scars in general are quite against Dreadnoughts in lore apparently, so as much as I’ve always loved Dreadnought characters in the game as a concept. I’m not sure it necessarily makes sense in this instance sadly.
I’m hoping that when Jaghatai returns White Scars will get a few unique kits etc to flesh out the chapter a bit more. Maybe getting models for Jaghatai, a new First Captain (on bike obviously!) and a Scars specific bike unit 😅
@@Vikingeek White Scars are against it as a rule but given the circumstances Jubal’s freedom is much more restricted considering he’s in an ICU bed permanently. Plus it’d be pretty cool if they put wheels on a Dreadnought and said “go vroom buddy, for the Khan”

Sustained Hits and Lethal Hits on Hellblasters is absolutely nasty. I personally prefer an Apothecary to provide some durability with 1 Hellblaster being returned to the unit in my Command Phase. But Lt instead is also good.
Yeh Az and plasma fortress with WOTDA was crazy.
Space Wolf player here. I can't seem to get away from logan on storm rider, mostly because I have been running a ton of Thunderwolves lately and aside from the bog standard wolflord he's pretty much the best character to lead them, so whenever I have 2 or more blocks he works his way in. That said a little cp farming and a turn of melee bombing never hurt anybody...except obviously the people you hurt with it.
Any battle shock rebuffs, like Death Mask of Sanguinius, should just be 'pick X units within 6 inches of this model: those units ARE battleshocked'
Seth really should be allowed with bladeguard and death company on foot.
In the case of the latter this would give the unit a tiny niche in contrast to jump pack
Don't think I'll ever forgive GW for not giving Tyberos any 10th edition rules at all...
Yeah, this might have been an edition where off Chapters could shine, with detachments, and so it's also the edition that dropped Tyberos and Asterion Moloch.

Azrael, Apothecary, 10 Hellblasters. An absolute beast of a unit.
Have always loved Shrike, cant wait to get my Jumppack Intercessors to finally have him lead a squad. (I run Primaris only for RG, first born only Deathwatch)
I've been using Azrael and a Apothecary with 10 Hellblasters, it's been working pretty good.
You can pair Logan on or of StormRider with a wolf lord battle leader and give him plus the unit he leads lethal hits. If its on foot the battle leader also gives him a 4+ feel no pain. Mounted he is able to move d6 after an enemy has targeted his unit during a shooting phase. On top of the fact thunderwolf calvary also add 1 to damage on a charge.
Grimmnar in Stormrider not doing much for his unit? Well repeating charges and impacts for his unit and everything else on the army, even if it is once per game sounds good enough to me! hah. And not to mention, when on Stormrider he will be leading Thunderwolves, which means that ALL the weapons get +1 damage on charge, that means his axe goes to damage 4 and his 6 wolf attacks are damage 2, big boost! Also when on the chariot, Grimnar not only gains 6 extra wounds and +1 toughness, he also becomes cavalry which means he´s not affected by anti-infantry or anti-vehicle, and as far as I know there´s no anti-cavalry on the game. Yes his mobility changes as he´s in a way chunckier unit now, but his movement also goes from 5 to 10. Logan on foot is a great option, played him like that plenty of times, but I find the chariot option equally good, just different playstyle.
Helbrecht has a few other silly advantages you can exploit. He is surprisingly OC2 (thanks servitors buddies), which while not the most important has come up for me in several situations. His giant base makes it so you can fit more guys in for a fight with base to base contact. The sword brethren rule of getting either +1 damage or +1 attack CAN APPLY TO HELBRECHT, his strike profile being able to go to damage 4 is just silly and his sweep going up to damage 2 means he can mince apart marine squads by himself. Castellan is great combo for him for those lethal hits, but it also means you can get an enhancement in the squad like tannhauser’s bones to make up for their lower durability. Put helbrecht, a castellan, and a full squad of sword brethren in a land raider as a massive threat moving up the board forcing the opponent to either dedicate themselves in taking them out quickly or just deal with the squad murdering its way through their lines. Several times I’ve had such a squad take down knights in single turns of combat without using all their attacks.
They need to add some flavor abilites for people making their own chapter. Would be nice to have something more than a vanilla Captain. Would love to see stat boost, save boost, unique weapon statlines etc for added points to add some flavor and put them more on par with some of the lesser chapter masters or captains out there.

It’s a crime that a third of the named chaos space marine characters come from black legion with 2 out of our six. The others bring Lucius the eternal, Huron blackheart, Fabius bile and vashtorr.
I would really appreciate a 'best combos' vid. Almost all the videos rate units in isolation but that's not how 10th is designed. Its all about characters leading units in detachments. I know this is mentioned in multiple videos but actually doing the rankings that way would be super interesting.
I do feel like rather than releasing a billion lieutenants we could have some more fleshed out chapters with more characters.. would be nice to see iron hands and raven guard with a few each for ex
The downside of that is the potential return of Herohammer with every army relying on named characters to do all the work. Also characters are consistently the worst price per point of all models and are ALWAYS low on stock. It took me half a year just to get Kharn, and he wasn't even good at the time. At least Captains and Lieutenants often come in combo boxes.

Azrael offers so much value for points that it's hard to consider any other character from the DA's roster.

1. the chapters do all have chapter masters in lore, just not all of them have models currently. Seeing as this is a video about chapter master models, the chapters that have models for their CM are featured in the video. The ones that don’t have models yet are irrelevant for this video.
2. Because everyone knows Helbrecht and Draigo are chapter masters regardless of keywords.
3. I don’t agree with you in saying the white scars have been forgotten. While yes they currently lack a chapter master model, theres nothing really to complain about. SM have the biggest range by far. Plus theres a whole detachment based on the white scars fighting style in the new codex.

Draigo and Calgar are staples of my Space Marines. Calgar is especially nasty. Very strong threat in his own right.

Helbrecht has not missed a battle yet for my Templars. He is an absolute beat stick. He pretty much takes out whatever he is pointed at, vehicle, squad or in between, his squad with him is just there to soak up wounds more or less.

As a Dark Angels player, Azrael has been on the board almost every game since 8th edition, almost always running with a brick of Hellblasters, though nowadays he often hangs out with company heroes for cheap durable objective holding.
I use High Marshal Helbrecht in most of my lists.
Helbrecht is an absolute unit with sword bros. 12 attcks at strength 7, ap-3, dmg 2 with their plus one dmg ability. I usually run the sustained hits vow so he averages 14 hits. He's only 95 pts now.
i've paired helbrecht with an apothecary leading a sword bro's squad its disgusting but ive discovered the castellen pairing which is great as well.
Fun fact, Shrike was originally captain of the first company, but later changed to chapter master

You can proxy him with a primaris model in friendly games.

Yes. And seeing as most people run a lot of cav with space wolves the charge re rolls is really strong. Most lists I see either run him on storm rider or bjorn. I’ve seen it about 50/50. Id probably rate Logan 4.5 stars

If I'm making a home-brew Ultramarines successor chapter and want to include Marneus Calgar, should I paint him as an Ultramarine, or in my own colour scheme? If in my own colour scheme, should I give him a new 'identity'? Trying to be lore compliant. Any advice is much appreciated.
Marneus Calgar should have won Warhammer Worlds. I mean he did, it’s the players that messed up his victory. Still, it was a great run!

Doesn't stormrider logan grimnar get +1 to his damage on all attacks when he charges with thunderwolves? So his axe will either do 2 or 4 damage and his wolves will do 2 damage
