My South Jersey Garden Tour August 3, 2024 Gloucester County, New Jersey

- Super Sweet 100 Cherry Tomatoes, Sweet Tangerine Hybrid tomatoes, Early Girl tomatoes, 4 Orange Habanero Peppers, Mammoth Jalapeno Peppers, 1 row of Anaheim Peppers, and 2 rows of Cubanelle Peppers. Yes, I realize for some reason, I said 2014 in the video it was 6 a.m. Zone 7.
The trellis studs are 8 ft buried 2 ft into the ground. All plants are planted on hills. 8 ft horizontal studs between the posts and all vertical posts are doubled up except for the end posts. I screwed the doubled up posts together. This is my first season adding the horizontal beam to stop the posts from bowing inward on the row due to the heaviness of the tomatoes. I'll be using this version of the trellis every season from here on out.

Stunning! What a dream to have a garden like this.. WOW
Thank you!
You do an excellent job removing weeds. I saw some around the pumpkin patch, that's expected. The tomato and pepper rows had none. Bravo!
Thanks! Yeah, the pumpkin patch is on it's own with the weeds. After the plants vine out , there really isn't much weeds as the shade from the pumpkin leaves make it hard for weeds to grow. I did, however militantly weeded and hoe'd those three rows before they got that big.
Wow great job fantastic garden .
Thanks!
You have a wonderful garden, I also want to grow many kinds of vegetables like that.
It's pretty easy. God does most of the work.
Lovely garden! I have been organic gardening in the NJ pine Barrens in Wharton State Forest for 40+ years. Horse manure was my start to improve the sandy soil. Now I use chicken manure. Gardening is an adventure to battle, deer, drought, and weeds! God bless your efforts
Thank you for the compliment! So my mom has chickens at her house. What do you do with the chicken manure? Do you just clean out the coop and everything that was in there is dumped into your garden? We have 1 horse and he produces so much to compost. Did you notice a diffreence between the two types? Every year we learn so much for the next season. Gardening is awesome
You have a great plot. Tomatoes look incredibly healthy.
Thanks! God does most of the work
OH WOW, a garden after my own hart.😲Beautiful garden.👍
Thank you!
Looks beautiful, congrats.
Thank you!
Thanks for your humor! I would go crazy too if something was out of place
Good Great Green .
Your garden is gorgeous!! Clean and organize. Thank you for sharing ❤
thank you!
I ❤your tomatoe trellis rows !
Thank you! I've mastered this method over the past 10 years. I have a few vids on my channel about how to tie them, what knots to use, etc.
Holy moly dude this is the type garden the avg gardener dreams of having :)
Thanks for saying that! I spend a lot of time on it. It's not always perfect. I just posted a new video to my channel showing my methods.
Awesome job on the garden. Killer tomato set up as the air gets between the rows and lets the garden breath. I think the cucumber plant "corner", might not have enough wind circulation to dry the plant out when it gets wet. I would not water overhead on the leaves to avoid the blight issue and when it rains out, get the leaf blower to dry off the plants when there is no full sun for more than 24 hours. I see the blight spreading to the pumpkins in that same corner also, it has to be a moisture thing. If a plant looks too bushy, it will also hold excess moisture inside and cause problems, thinning out some sucker branches and leaves will help the airflow better. I see some beauties to pick, Happy Harvesting!
For two seasons in a row, I had the cucumbers in the corner that I have my tomatoe trellises in this year. I think it really comes down to the variety of cucumber plant. We will see next season when I try a few varieties on more trellises that I'll make then.
@@LibertyNJ Very well could be
What a beautiful, thought out garden,so well cared for!
Thank you! A garden is just OCD on display.
Bucks County PA here…love the garden my man!
I had to trash 2/3 of my straight eights, and the only few surviving are barely holding on. But the burpless ones did great for me.
I had a crazy infestation of the cucumber beetles this year - how’d you hold them off the pumpkins??
@@_RyanHutchinson Thanks! Yes, I plan on trying some other variety other than straight eights next year. I'm going to build a few more trellises for them and try a couple different varieties.
Your garden is absolutely beautiful! I live in New Jersey also and my garden looks like a hot mess!😬
Cool! What county? We had a very hot start to our season. It could make or break anyone's garden.
@@LibertyNJ I’m down in Cape May county. The beginning of the season was hot and very dry and then we had those huge amounts of rain all at one time often on over this last month or so. I feel like by this time every year the insect pressure and disease it can be discouraging at times the squash vine borer really destroys a lot of my garden. But I love being out in the yard so each year I keep trying, but honestly honestly, I think next year I’m staying away from cucumbers and squash.
I was looking to buy some property in that area myself. It has a good climate, good rainfall and well draining soil. I am into fruit trees and all types of berries
I’m right on the border of Franklinville/Monroe Twp. I have pretty sandy soil, so my tomatoes don’t do well normally. I’ve been pretty successful with blueberries and greens though!
I'm very lucky to have plenty of compost. I've had 4 years of compost being dumped in. The original soil had a lot of stones in it. I just till, till, till and keep adding compost.
Wow ,So beautiful your marvelous garden ❤
thank you!
Great job 👏
thanks!
Absolutely amazing garden.
thanks!
hey man i love your set up- would you mind sharing your spacing dimensions with me- width of beds and distance between beds. Thanks
A beautiful garden I've never had seen before. Thanks for your showing and sharing. Great job! I'm your subscriber now.
thanks for the compliments
luống cà chua làm giàn rất lạ, đẹp quả nhiều quá, cám ơn bạn chia sẻ hay
Thank you. I learned this method ten years ago from watching youtube videos on the subject and have had great success with this style of trellis.
I was thinking very neet and tidy veggie garden and then u mentioned ur ocd and it all made sense.
You do it beautifully.❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks! Been practicing for a while
Hi, try Tasty Green Hybrid cucumber. Very disease resistant, good taste, and small seeds. Pick when they are about 1-1/2" diameter or a little small. Have planted for three years now. The plants I plant in May have lasted into September.
Thanks! I'll look into them.
What an incredible garden! Great job!
thank you!
Beautiful I Love the trellis idea definitely using this
yes! It is the best and looks the best in any garden. The whole trellis system makes each row look like a hedge. Check out my other videos on "stringing up tomatoes". I would highly suggest you place an 8ft stud horizontally between each stud to prevent the end studs from bowing in under the weight of the growing plant/fruits. And buy yourself a box of "tomato twine" off of amazon. You get about a mile worth for 25 bucks. And use a clinch knot when tying to the posts.
@@LibertyNJ got it, thanks for the advice
Wow man, that is really impressive!
Thanks!
Garden is so great! Thank you for introducing tangerine tomatoes. I will get seeds for the next year for sure! I am also in nj and what I do with my cucumber plants- at the end of July I an cutting down all leaves except very ends of vine, give these plant roots good boost adding blood meal/bone meal/ epsom salt, and mulching each plant by grass. After that we have cucumbers from the same plants till the end of October))
thanks for the compliment! I definitely need to get my cucumber game up to snuff. there is always next season! I'll have a couple more trellises made for them by spring so I can try a few different varieties. I usually only stick with the straight eights and wind up with the same results.
I really enjoyed your video.
It has such a peaceful and relaxing vibe. 💚
You got my subscribe 👍
thanks! I'm not a big fan of talking in my videos, I have a few where I just walk through in silence. They are really nice because you can hear all of the birds in the morning and nature sounds.
How do you not have any weeds? I have crabgrass and bermuda grass and it invades my entire garden every year no matter how hard I try.
I rotortill about every 3 weeks. Every 2 weeks I hoe to break up the dirt between and around the each plant, then give them all bone and blood meal. Then I just upkeep every day with a hoe after I tend to my tomato trellises. now that my trellises are maxed out, it's even easier for me to upkeep. This video was taken a couple days after a rotortill.
@@LibertyNJ I appreciate the reply and the great advice, thank you.
Looking good..nice 👌 ❤
thanks!
What part of NJ? I'm from Vineland and I've been gardening for 14 years. Love your garden!
*You need to prune the excess leaves on the cucumbers. They need ventilation. We have heat and humidity which also causes ventilation issues.
Franklinville
@@LibertyNJ nice! Howdy neighbor, lol.
I live down in Cape May County and I have been gardening for a few years and wish my garden looked that beautiful!! Great job. I hope to have time to watch your tomato trellis videos because my tomatoes are all over the place😬
How awesome to find some neighbors on here by accident. I’m right between Vineland and Franklinville 😂
I live in south jersey. Maple shade
perfect garden
thank you for the compliment!
Very organized landscape ❤ probably can try to install some surrounding wood pallet fr the pumpkin prevent them to crawl over the border
you can't go wrong with simplicity. Rows make it very easy to rotortill.
I have family in Sewell NJ, Washington township. Nice video, it makes my ocd feel good 😊 except that one tomato plant in the corner of your garden 😂
I had three plants in that corner in pots to show my wife how propagation works after you break off stems from the main plant.
@@LibertyNJ oh I see, I meant the other first plants you showed us were you said you put a regular tomato plant where you meant to put the cherry tomatoes
Dude put alot in his garden I like that 👍
a couple hours a day is all it takes. I planted all the first week of june
Nice tomatoes.
First time seeing that type of trellising
It's the best way for a long row of tomatoes! you should try it out
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Beautiful garden
Thank you!
Excellent looking garden,my cucumbers do that every year near the end of the season,I’m assuming you have already harvested a bunch, you can reseed in late July and get better results than waiting for the last ones plus you don’t have to watch them die. I would be curious about what chemicals you use? Insecticides? Anti-fungals? I got a ton of fruit trees it’s a real challenge trying to grow decent fruit with minimal chemicals so a lot of fruit goes in my compost instead of jars. I’ve been using cages for my tomatoes that I made from leftover horse fence,I’ve been trying some trellis methods the last couple of years,we had a massive windstorm come through here in early July it came from the complete opposite direction we usually get our wind and it just leveled tons of my tomatoes events like this is why we always plant way more than enough.
Thank you. By this time every season, I'm pretty much over cucumbers anyway, but next season I'm going to do more varieties of cucumber and actually have a plan to reseed when appropriate and see how long I can get them into the end of september/october
I love my Early Girls for cooking. It takes a little longer to cook down for sauce but nothing produces more tomatoes per plant.
I use them for my salsa recipe. And yes, they produce a ton of tomatoes!
Hey neighbor! Camden county here. Love your setup. My garden grows more each year. I have had horrible issues with blossom end rot. Planted 144 seds 6 dif varieties. Only needed 14 for my beds but they are doing horrible. What do you use for fertilizer?? New sub also.
I’m in Cape May county! This garden looks amazing
I start out every season before I even plant with a load of compost that is 100% horse manure. Then every two weeks I treat each plant with bone meal and blood meal. That is it. 100% organic non GMO
Beautiful garden well kept. What do you feed your bell pepper plants? Mine are lush green but small, they are planted In ground. Thanks jim80.
I do not have any bell pepper plants. If I were you, I would always feed each plant a tablespoon of blood meal and a tablespoon of bone meal every 2 weeks. It's amazing what that will do for your garden.
your garden looks amazing, i love the setup.
Thanks! I try to keep my layout very simple and easy to rotortill.
Wow great job 👏
Great video
thank you!
Nice job
Thanks!
You must love your Tomatoes, how did you get those Tomatoes to grow so tall?
As long as they are supported (in my case, with string) and vertical growth is promoted, they will grow 9ft plus, I do have to top them. It all really depends on the variety. If you see, the sweet tangerine tomato row is fully grown and they only get about 4-4.5 ft tall while the 2 early girl rows and the cherry tomato section aren't stopping and I have to top them.
Nice garden! You plant tomatoes in the same spot every year?
Beautiful job ,how do you keep it so weed free
Thanks! I rotortill every 2-3 weeks and upkeep between tillings with my hoe.
man spectacular garden OMG can you fedex me a tomato sandwich? Next Business Afternoon works LOL 🔥
haha thanks a lot!
@@LibertyNJ to be honest you're you only person on the CZcamss that have shown a seriously technical Florida Weave and kept it going... dude amazing.. you OCD bastard, might have to subscribe... dunno....
Beautiful! But how do you keep squirrels from getting into everything?
The squirrels do not bother with the garden at all. And if they did, I'd take care of them the same way that I do with rabbits and groundhogs.
@LibertyNJ yeah I would too but dang neighbors r too close
Something is eating rhe plant roots I'd say ifit's just a plant here and there.
Hi my brother! You have so beautiful and healthy garden. What do you use to prevent from disease? I try to prevent tomatoes from phytophthora but can’t.
I just use what works best for me year to year. If one variety of tomato does poorly, I won't plant them next season. I just try to find disease resistant varieties for my zone. Good luck!
@@LibertyNJ Thank You So Much!!!
I was thinking ---Who would devote this much care in gardening and then you said something about OCD. I have a problem in my garden and I would say I am the opposite of OCD. Ducks, woodchucks, birds, chipmunks get lost in my garden. I get a few tomatoes and sunflower seed heads in my south Jersey garden. No blueberries, no strawberries...too many birds---even with 7 blueberry bushes.
Your channel just popped up on my feed, I’m in Burlington county! Do you hand water or have irrigation?
I'm in Gloucester County. I hand water with just a garden hose.
Do you grow tomatoes in the same spot every year? I always heard it wears out the soil if you don't plant other vegetables in that place.
No. I usually keep them in the same area, but every year in the beginning of the season, I get a ton of compost dumped in and then I spread it and rotortill. then, every two weeks after planting, I feed each plant with equal parts bone meal and blood meal. This was the first year I had my tomatoes in the area they are in in the video. As long as you put compost in, every year, the soil is still great. I use pure horse manure compost.
Beautiful garden! Trash the cucumbers. Go with a bush determinate variety.
I'll be trying out a few different varieties next season. I'll build a few more trellises for them. Thanks for the compliment!
What kind of cucumbers are you growing? I noticed a big difference when I switched over to Sujo cucumbers so much better, they perform well in Nj
sujo? I've never heard of them. I'll have to look into them. I've been growing straight eights and in seasons past, some burpless varieties.
@@LibertyNJ suyo sorry autocorrect
Ào thật la tuyệt vời, tôi sẽ thiết kế vườn của tôi giống như này❤🎉
thank you!
How did u do this garden from beginning and type of dirt. Look at migardener great seeds
My garden is 50ft X 50ft. I start out by clearing out all of the brush from fall/winter/spring and then I rotortill a few times. Then I water it, wait a week, then rotortill a couple more times. I'll add my compost which is just composted horse manure, rotortill it all in. Then I make my rows. I make hills for the rows. I do supplement my plants every three weeks with bone meal and blood meal.
Do you do anything against blight since it looks like you don’t prune your plants. Is it the bone and blood meal ?
If you are talking about my cucumbers, no, i don't prune them. Actually, I don't really prune anything in my garden except when the cucumbers and pumpkin vines get too long on the ground. And I only top my tomato plants.
Are you asking if the blood meal and bone meal are causing the blight?
@@LibertyNJ I'm talking about your tomato plants i saw no blight spots or any decaying leafs. personally i've had some blight issues on my tomatos this year, my guess is because i live in a humid climate. and i was asking if the bone and blood meal could help prevent such diseases. you also inspired me a lot so next year i'm making a smaller trellis just like yours. also if you got any tips to prevent blight on my tomato plants, please tell me. should i still prune some of the suckers to get more air flow or should i just leave it ? thanks a lot!
@@panda6162 There was barely anything on my tomato plants in the video. But last week, the blight started low and is working it's way up. I'm still harvesting from my early girls and cherries, but this is usually how it gets by September. I do not spray anything except for my pumpkin and cucumber plants
how often do you water your plants?
once a day. most of the time, I do it in the morning after work. If it is a heatwave I will water in the morning heavily and then just water the base of the rows on both sides in the evening.
👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
thanks!
What fertilizer are you using? Very nice garden!
Perfect climate. No way this works in Oklahoma
not sure what your weather is like, but the first two months here were hot as hell and had a few heatwaves. You just have to keep watering watering watering.
That’s basically a farm
Looks phenomenal! Do you spray for disease/insects?
Thanks! yes, just my cucumbers and pumpkins.
What is your fertilization regime for the tomatoes?
@@andrewphillips7320 i start the season with a load of manure compost and till it in. Then, every 2 weeks I feed each plant one tablespoon of bone meal and one tablespoon of blood meal. Super simple.
@@LibertyNJ respect and thanks
wow nice garden. i think i seen insect damage on those peppers. wish i didnt have weeds like you.
There is some colorado potato beetle damage, but not like in the beginning of the season. You can never prevent all the bugs.
beautiful. how do you keep it so clean
I rotortill every three weeks, and keep up with it on my morning walkthrough with the hoe. All of my strings on the peppers and tomatoes are high enough down the row to fit a hoe under so you can get between each plant.
What is the size of the garden?
it's 50 feet by 50 feet or 2500 square feet
Str 8 not good in the heat I do bush
definitely going to try bush next season

I do not understand how anyone could be into gardening and still be an atheist. It is so obvious that God Almighty created EVERYTHING.
Super impressive!! ,how do you keep your plants so healthy? I'm in hunterdon county Nj and I struggle with late blight and sometimes a little end rot on my tomatoes and this year got hammered with cucumber beetles , took out 5 of my 6 cucumber plants with bacterial wilt, i got 1 cucumber and the rest were lost at about 2 inches in length with the wilt.I put in a banana pepper plant around end of May and that is my best plant going this year, it is about 4 feet tall and I have gotten 2 twelve ounce jars off of it so far pickled for salads and sandwiches. I will get another jars worth off of it in about a week or so. Chipmunks robbed every strawberry I had except a hand full.
So, on the edges of my fence-line, I do not weed whack inside or out. This leaves something for pests to eat instead of your plants. I've seen waaayyyyy more damage on the edgelines of the garden than on any of my plants. dont get me wrong, I do get some leaves that have been munched on, but its nothing at all really. I do not spray anything except for my cucubrits *pumpkins cucumbers, squash etc* As for the tomatoes, I had a lot of colorado potato beetles in the beginning of the season, but I hardly had any young squishy black and orange colorado potato beetle larvae that I kill when I do my daily trellis work.
Please, brother, I follow you on CZcams and Instagram. Please help me find a job contract on a farm. May God bless you.🇲🇦🇺🇸🙏🙏
I don't have an Instagram....fibber.
@@LibertyNJ Sorry
Hey Bud..your OCD is doing wonders for your garden..your garden and plants look great !!
Hope you don’t mind a couple questions..?
You mentioned blight on your cucumbers, how did you determine it was blight ? A lot of the leaves show signs of Downey mildew with the small yellow dots. What about the underside of the leaves..what do they look like? Do you rotate where you plant them every year?
About the cucumbers..
If you want to try one or two new varieties to replace the 8’s take a look at Holmes Seed out of Ohio. They’re a commercial seed company that sells to home gardeners as well. They offer the same commercial varieties but instead of having to buy 1K of seed, they sell qtys. of 10,20 & 50 for home growers. This is where my OCD kicks in.. I want to buy the same seeds professional growers & farmers use, I figure if it’s good enough for them to make a living on they’re good enough for me.
Check out the “Bristol” and “Cobra” varieties of slicing cucumbers. They’re both hybrids, with better disease resistance and the production is off the chain compared to older varieties like Straight 8. These varieties are also gynoecious meaning they produce more female blossoms than male so you get more cukes.
Sorry for the long post, not sure how long you’ve been at this so if you’ve already been thru a lot of my questions please disregard them..not trying to break your ba!!s. I wish the summers here in Tx were a little milder so my tomatoes wouldn’t get beat up so bad, but at least I can grow 10 months out of the year !!
Keep on growing..your garden is a great example to new gardeners on keeping your weeds in check and your plants trellised or using your own version of the Florida Weave.
I did not have mildew on them as there wasn't any powder. Also, I've been spraying them every 2 weeks for mildew. I just assumed it was blight as it spread. My pumpkins still to today do not have any mildew yet and they are right next tot he cucumbers. The undersides of the leaves look like the tops, crunchy and brown. I'll definitely look into the seeds you suggested. I'm no master gardener. God does most of the work every year, I just pretty much water everything. I repeat what works for me. I do not ph test my soil. I did however rotate my cucumbers from one side to the opposite side this year. I planted in pure manure compost. It has got to be the variety.
