Building an AWD mk1 VW Scirocco in 11 minutes - 2 Years Start-to-Finish

  • This is a slideshow summary with a few video shorts.
    My main goal was a mk1 Scirocco with enough traction to seamlessly deliver a lot of power. I also wanted the car to look normal inside and out, be easily maintained with standard VAG parts, and be bulletproof reliable.
    For whatever reason(s), a lot of these AWD VW conversions are either never completed, or they stay in a rough state. In order to avoid those types of outcomes, I carefully considered what approaches would yield a fully completed car in a reasonable timeframe and within an acceptable budget. It was still a huge undertaking: I spent most of 2 years in my garage and the project cost $13000 including both donors, specialized tools, supplies, along with tons of help from friends.
    I grafted into the Scirocco's shell an entire AWD Audi TT floor-pan along with the firewall and front frame rails. The front end is a removable "veneer" and it discreetly leaves full airflow to the radiator and intercoolers. I installed the 225 1.8t, AWD running gear, ABS and ESP hardware, pared-down TT electrical system, with carpet and seats also from the Audi. I scratch-built the dash and center console around the TT's instrument cluster and the center tunnel.
    The car has a Forge 008 diverter valve and an APR stage 1 tune on 100 Octane, supposedly good for 277hp. Initial weight was 2623 lbs and I've since whittled that down to 2568. I wish it were another 300 pounds lighter, and the rocker panels are bulkier than I'd like.
    At 11:10 is about one second of full boost in 5th at 60mph.
    I posted a driving video with a "spirited" bit here: • AWD mk1 Scirocco #32

    BEAUTIFUL! I bought a used 1980 Scirocco S in 1984 for college and I loved that car. It drove through all weather conditions and I loved driving it in the snow. This AWD version with an Audi engine must be a blast to drive, great job.

      I'm glad you like it! I think the car addresses the lackluster performance of the early Sciroccos, and corrects the TT's ugliness.
      We joked about taking the leftovers to build a 3300lb FWD 70hp blob-shape. The result would be the ugliest possible car with a predicted 0-60 time of 42 seconds, lol.

    That's an absolutely SICK build dude!!! Normally I'd say building a Mk I VW would be iffy (at best) due to age, metal fatigue, rust, etc... But this is definitely the way to go! Crazy amounts of fabrication, but it looks fantastic and seems like it's got a ton of power. I've seen a few Mk II Golf AWD conversions, but never a Scirocco... Outstanding job! What a car...

    • @echassin
      @echassin  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Sadly, IDK how to improve the look. It's actually lower than a stock Scirocco, but the rocker panels are definitely bulkier than I'd like. I begrudgingly accepted that early in the build to accommodate the hood line and the door sill height. I run 205 wide tires, IMO that's the max without resorting to Berg Cup styling or having too much poke.
