What Is Safety Stock Inventory? | Rowtons Training by Laurence Gartside

"Safety Stock" inventory is a term used for the inventory we keep in stock to protect against potential future disruption - variation and uncertainty of supply and demand.
Without any "safety stock", a small delay in an incoming shipment of raw materials or a sudden, unexpected surge in demand could cause production to stop or a stock-out.
Many businesses deliberately keep this extra "safety stock" inventory to protect themselves against a certain level of foreseeable variation or disruption. Some prefer to call this "Buffer Inventory" (whilst others reserve this term for temporary inventory held within the system to protect a particularly important process from upstream disruption).

Calculating how much safety stock to hold is a whole extra topic with many possible methods ranging from the quick and crude to detailed statistical modelling.
