This is the Skywalker Effect. When your close friends and family sees you approaching darkness and by the time they all give up on you, the greatest help can be someone from the past, but more importantly someone who has an ideal image of you, that they can use to remind you who you were so that you can compare it to who you are now and make that desicion again about who you want to be.

@Tangent of circle. Well, no. That was a little padawan with no personal connection with Anakin, no persuading strategy, no verbal skills, fookin' scared, fearing for his life. He wasn't someone from Anakin's past and he wasn't someone who COULD use that ideal image in his head, because he didn't have the wisdom, perspective and other skills that Luke had in 'Return of The Jedi' and this judge had. I haven't watched 'Star Wars: Rebels' but I guess there Ahsoka is scared as hell too, so she can't really position herself to change Vader back to Anakin. I mean, even Luke didn't look like he knew exactly what he was doing he just knew he wanted to turn his father back. He just tried to talk to Vader and then started dying and begging for help. But that talk and begging was good enough with the current surcemstances.

It is difficult to explain, but hugging him would have been inappropriate from a purely moral standpoint. She can't hug him because it would send the wrong message. Usually you hug someone to comfort them, so by not hugging him she is telling him to become stronger as a person. If she hugs and comforts him she is subconsciously reinforcing his addiction and weakness. So she is behaving as a true friend rather than a false one by not hugging him.

I thought the same. But sometimes, and this works better for males typically, a little shame and a little praise can go a long long way. So often anymore people don't know their neighbors and often aren't close with their families, and the consequences of bad behavior don't touch a person as deeply when there is little to no human connexion. But as soon as she spoke to him as a fondly remembered classmate, and he recognizes her, you see that immediate flash of wonder and joy and the years melt from him, only to be replaced with the realization of the situation they're in. The Judge taking the time to tell the whole courtroom and Arthur that he's remained "the nicest boy" in her mind and she'd wondered about him in the intervening years likely had more effect upon him than any amount of time incarcerated. I wish them both all the best.

Jesus can give you a second chance. We sometimes give up on ourselves because we simply have limits. If we would only take the trust and belief from off of ourselves and place it in Jesus, anything is possible.
      Don't keep Jesus waiting...
Confess Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Tell him that you're taking your trust and putting it in Him.
      Romans 10:9-10
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
