  • For a few months every year, thousands of people will head into B.C's most remote areas to plant trees. But unless you've tried the job yourself, you likely don't have a clear sense of what goes into it. The industry, culture, and labour of the tree planter is the subject of a new documentary called One Million Trees.
It can be watched online at CBC Gem.

Tree planters are in excellent physical condition. Worked alongside them as a forest tech. Great people. Tough as nails.

Same. Worked alongside them as a landscaper and contractor. Hard as nails.

Nowadays I work with a forest tech doing layouts. 20 year career as a planter, well over 1 million trees. Its a swan song helping with the layouts. forest techs are important.

I planted trees for 15 or so seasons mostly in Louisiana and East Texas did a few seasons up in Minnesota and Wisconsin quit counting after two million trees that was in the 80s 63 have had back surgery and both hips recently replaced. It'll wear you out but it was a fun time

I didi it for 4 seasons in BC. It’s a tough job but can be fun and satisfying (as well as physically and mentally challenging). If you choose to to do it, it’s just like any demanding task: keep your goal in mind , strive ti do your best but also try not to let it take an undue toll on your health.

Thank you so much for planting trees we desperately need. Remember when Trudeau promised to plant like a billion trees across Canada?? He's yet to plant one!

I should hope the trees planted in cut blocks don't count towards Trudeau's promise as the logging companies are already required to have those trees replanted.

Tree planting is easy. I enjoyed it. You have to be an outdoorsy type preferably the hunting type, surveying type or Seismic type that’s used to being in all types of terrain and weather. If you can go on an Elk hunt or Mountain Sheep hunt you are good to go. It’s what you make out of it. If you think the job sucks balls then you’ll be miserable. Imo nothing sucks more balls than a Service rig.

Tree's plant themselves. I'd like to see and 5yr and 10yr comparison of a man-tree planted section, vs one left to nature.
