- K'naan - Wavin' Flag
Album: Troubadour
"Wavin' Flag" is a song by Somali-Canadian artist K'naan from his album Troubadour. The song was a global hit, reaching the top ten in 19 charts around the world and was chosen as Coca-Cola's promotional anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, hosted by South Africa. The English version was released as "Wavin' Flag (Celebration Mix)" by K'naan. A version of the song featuring will.i.am and David Guetta was targeted for international release. Many other bilingual and country-specific versions were released. A remake of the song by an ad hoc supergroup of Canadian artists, credited as Young Artists for Haiti, became a charity single in Canada.
I finally found the version I've been searching for years.

"I heard them say, love is the way. Love is the answer. That's what they say. But look how they treat us.."
We fight their battles, then they deceive us
Try to control us, they couldn't hold us
'Cause we just move forward like Buffalo Soldiers

The whites knew how to rule SA. Respect apartheid
"But it's my home, all I've ever known" - amazing lyrics

Doesn't matter where he is talking about. This song is universal so everybody can identify with it.

Agree
When I get older I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom, just like a wavin' flag
[Chorus]
When I get older, I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom just like a wavin' flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back, oh
[Verse 1]
Born to a throne, stronger than Rome
A violence prone, poor people zone
But it's my home, all I have known
Where I got grown, streets we would roam
Out of the darkness, I came the farthest
Among the hardest survival
Learn from these streets, it can be bleak
Accept no defeat, surrender, retreat
So we struggling, fighting to eat
And we wondering when we'll be free
So we patiently wait for that fateful day
It's not far away, but for now we say
[Chorus]
When I get older I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom just like a wavin' flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back, oh
[Verse 2]
So many wars, settling scores
Bringing us promises, leaving us poor
I heard them say 'love is the way'
'Love is the answer,' that's what they say
But look how they treat us, make us believers
We fight their battles, then they deceive us
Try to control us, they couldn't hold us
Cause we just move forward like Buffalo Soldiers
But we struggling, fighting to eat
And we wondering, when we'll be free
So we patiently wait for that faithful day
It's not far away but for now we say
[Chorus]
When I get older, I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom just like a wavin' flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back, oh
When I get older I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom just like a wavin' flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back, and then it goes
And then it goes
And everybody will be singing it
And you and I will be singing it
And we all will be singing it
[Chorus]
When I get older, I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom just like a wavin' flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back, oh
When I get older, when I get older
I will be stronger just like a wavin' flag
Just like a wavin' flag, just like a wavin' flag
Flag, flag, just like a wavin' flag

Ya. He is talking about growing up in Somalia 🇸🇴 which is very dangerous and is currently in a civil war and was declared a “failed state”. The lyrics about what it’s like there.

Just to add that Bruno Mars co-wrote the lyrics.

Man I remember back in the 2010 summer when this song got confirmed to be the WC 2010. I learned the lyrics and told all my friends and kept singing it, then it turned out the official version was slightly different and more based on the WC. But I always preferred the original, this version just can't be beaten. I'm 25 now and this song brings back such good memories!
Me too bro. Love from brazil
For our brothers & sisters in Palestine. We are with you.
This song should have walked away with 10 Grammies!!! This song has helped me overcome so much in my Life!! Thank yuh K’Naan!!!

Glad you doing better brother 🇸🇴
they made a world cup remix and ruined the original purpose of the song
I can relate this song so much to growing up in my home country. People face so much hardship but still don't give up and move forward with smiles on their faces. This is beautiful.
What is your home country?
I love the part where he says "I heard them say, love is the way" to Buffalo solders and struggling... I

Poor people's zone, but it's my home❤
The year was 2010. Our lives were in turmoil. The world was dying spiritually. Then 2010 summers came, the World Cup united the entire world, this was its anthem and compassion grew amongst the people
This song hits differently when you think of what africa has gone through
Stunning and so inspiring! This song will still evoke the same emotions decades later... Ageless!
After all these years, the original lyrics still hit me so hard and so good
This song never fails to cheer me up on a rough day ❤️
I cried the first time I heard the ending part of this song .. I was 13 and lost my twin brother...

This is one powerful song.....still awesome today and will be tomorrow.
It's been 10 years and it's still one of my favorite song. The lyrics to this song are so empowering, its universal for the all the people around the world who have been oppressed for centuries.
I’ve always preferred this version over the Coca Cola. It took out some of the natural beauty of this song. 😍😍😍 I will always love these songs
My Dad loved this song and the lyrics. He's passed now. See you again Dad.
That Rome line was 🔥
It’s a catchy song, but the lyrics are amazing!! If only all music was like this in current day.
the most powerfull song never get old. pushes the spirit to be like a waving flag in a smooth breeze

What a song the lyrics are so deep, makes me want to cry
I just discovered the WC version a few months ago and it is truly an amazing song...but this blows it out of the water.
One of my best memories of my mom was when I played this song for her. It touched her heart and she was cried. This artist transcends rap he is a poet.
This better than waka waka.

After losing just about everything being a bartender in 2020... I love this song
this has, literally, been the only song capable of motivatin me enough to actually wanna get off my ass and go run, for the past 5-6 years.
no matter the circumstance, or situation... this song has always helped me to get over the past and strive for a better self, a better life and a better future.
