Biggest tip is from 37 to 38 minutes. Cast and leave rod tip lifted towards flies as they pendulum down to the bottom while stripping line for tension. Don’t start leading the flies right away or the strike zone will be decreased and the flies may never pendulum to the bottom. That pendulum motion allows the flies to drift freely with the current exactly like any other type of food that naturally flows through the river. Trout go nuts for that natural free drift whole euro nymphing. It’s addicting.

Thanks so much for sharing this technique with us beginners concerning Euro Nymphing. I tried the technique yesterday on my home tailrace and found out pretty quick I needed some more instruction. After watching this presentation I found out where I was making mistakes with the presentation and drift.
I watched this as a primer to my first euro nymphing experience this past weekend. I managed to hook 5-6 wild rainbows but landed 3. I came back and rewatched it today and I think I learned more the second time around than the first!
Some wonderful instruction here. Thanks. I'm headed for the river tomorrow with my new rod and rig. The famous Little Red River, my main fishing flow for 50 years.

This is a fantastic intro to euro nymphing. While I've been fly fishing for years, euro style is completely new to me and a technique that I've wanted to add to my arsenal for quite some time. I fished euro style for the first time yesterday in gin clear, low flow conditions in the infamous Cheesman Canyon, a gorgeous fishery with monster browns and rainbows, but notoriously well-educated fish. I followed George Daniel's tips for making your own leader, casting form and his guidelines for ensuring direct contact with your point fly at all times, and ended up landing a beautiful, uber-healthy 22" rainbow in a fast-moving shallow current, where an indicator set up would simply have not worked. While everyone seems to have their own style and techniques, George Daniel's are a great place to start.

This is an especially good video... very detailed. "Very detailed" is correct.
The "Two-Turn Orvis Tippet Knot," (tying on the dropper line), is major good info... precisely what I needed to see.
Looping around the bottom of the initial loop, prior to going through the loop twice, is what makes this "one easy step" better than just a straight "Surgeons Knot."

Well, I just learned something new today. Orvis customer since 1972. Recently retired so updating myself.
It sounds like what Ted Fay used to do on the Upper Sacramento River in Northern California in the 50s/60s.
We didn't have the equipment back then.
We didn't have the 10 foot rods with 2-3 weight line
We weren't using buoyant indicators back then
We just wrapped lots of lead wire around the shank of the hook
Waded upstream and cast behind rocks.
This is a sick video. I thought euro nymphing was super complex and kind of daunting until now

Anyone with same indicator on my type can cast the same with Indicator on or High stick . Once line is below is loaded to cast ahead easy to pointed by arm to any area destined by tip of Fly Rod NP. Few times and never false cast in most good nymph fishing Tom.Noticed you hang up on bottom often ? i cast 3 flies 2 droppers NP You!

Except for the reel and the weighted flies, this is very similar to the way Japanese masters fish tenkara rods - which are often 14 to 16 feet long. Deadly. This (Euro nymphing or the tenkara presentation style - with the sighters rather than strike indicators) is an especially effective method for presenting salmon egg patterns.
I'm new to fly fishing but maybe not. The best trout fishing back home in Alaska I did was with a spin rod and no sinkers just a hook and was definitely 'Tenkara' style. I just sat above a sizable pool and dropped my single egg on hook right in then lifted. Had my limit of dollies for breakfast in zero time.
What kind of net does George have? I like that it has a long handle.

That net is made by FishPond. I have a CatchCam net, that is similar, but allows for filming too. If you want a cheaper version, but still good, Frabill makes one as well. The Fishpond I believe runs around $150.

Tom, can I ask a question? The full leader length is what? Is the technique all leader, or does the fly line come beyond the tip of the rod? If not, you’re using Chameleon line to make the leader 25 ft? Hope this isn’t too many questions. Thanks!

Heres a problem I have encountered with my short leader setup. Using a short leader setup typically I have the euro nymph line maybe out of the top guide a MAX of a foot. I get line twist.. Its to the point where my euro nymph mono core line starts twisting all the way down to the reel.. Any idea if this is caused by me or just naturally happens.. Anyways I ended just putting about a 15ft section of chameleon on the back end of the leader and problem seems to be solved.

What about fishing very deep pools or deep fast runs? How do you get down without a ton a split shot?
Tie your own flies with lead wire or tungsten beads... but it is a fly rod after all... you can’t dredge with it...
Lance Egan says the top fly is the point and should always be the heaviest.. I wondered if you could get Lance on the Pod

Waders are also important with this method since if your to far out with your nymphs you can’t properly tightline nymph Hense the reason they use 10 foot rods not 7 foot rods
Good point. I think a 10' rod is a must. Most specifically a 2-4 wt. I have a 3 :)
Vacuum up fish with euro nymphing. Feels weird to tell others in the parking lot that I got 18 fish and they tell you that they got skunked. Plus you can fish fast runs and riffles that traditional fly fisherman skip so you get water to yourself!
So right! I actually fish less water then what most people do. I am hunting for runs and riffles, whereas a lot of people skip it right over. I actually don't care for the pools as much. Give me some rain/clouds and put me in the moving water :)

How heavy of a fly would you need to do this? I would imagine you wouldn't have enough weight to get down.
Mono Rig ?
This set up is a little different. They don't use the long butt section. I believe George directly connects his sighter to euro fly line. Whereas for the Mono Rig, which I use, there is use of Maxima Chamleon Line for like 20-24 ft before you get to tippet rings and sighter. Such a great system. I do a couple videos on it as well. Definitely my go to!
You want to lean this technique look up Lance Egan. Modern Nymphing changed my life

This is very difficult to do on most river systems. The issue is getting to the fish without spooking them. Get too close, and they dont eat.
Can 100% be done with shot. Dropper loops on nymphs with shot below are actually more effective than abeadhead. The fly is in the zone for even longer. Crazy a person who's been doing this for only a few years telling "the nymph guy" this, seems like a no brainer to me. Tick the bottom with shot below a nymph on a loop. Free motion.

Like your vids- but minor suggestion. When it comes to Brook trout streams I’d be cautious of naming them on social media. Instead just mention the general area youre fishing, like Grand Canyon PA, or Pine Creek Tribs.. These little treasure of a streams can’t handle much pressure before the fishing suffers.
Like people don't already know about pine creek, kettle creek, etc.?
They said it was the Farmington river, a place very popular to fish. They aren’t naming a trickle in the woods with big fish, they are naming a river that is known all over the place.
