- One year ago, I added Engine Restore to a turbo diesel engine (Ford 5000) tractor with low compression. • Does Restore Work? Wi... I tested compression before and after adding Engine Restorer (Restore). Did Engine Restorer continue to help the compression or was it a temporary fix? The tractor compression continued to improve a little and not it starts better when the engine is cold.

I have two 6cyl and one 4cyl cars, so I think I'll just buy 48oz (three 16oz bottles) and measure it out myself...
4cyl 9oz x 2 = $24 (18oz)
(2)6cyl 12.5oz x 4 = $52 (25oz)
Totaling $76 for 2 oil changes each (43oz)

16oz x 3 = $36 for 2 oil changes each (48oz)
That equals 3oz at $1.50 per cylinder, for less than half the total price if you buy the "correct" bottles.
Pay attention in school kids lol.
If u ever cut open another oil filter, squeeze the paper before you open it to dry it out the liquids then open to see if anything is between bends(thick liquids can hide solids)

When you use the magnet checking for metal in the oil, cut the finger off of one of your black gloves and wire tie around the magnet. The black glove will provide contrast to the fragments and save time cleaning the magnet.

I wouldn't have ever used Restore if I didn't watch your videos. My town and country has 367000 miles on it and had no power left. It was getting between 250 to 300 miles per tank. It now is getting 550 miles per tank now it took about 1000 miles to see the full "Restore" and runs absolutely Amazing! Thank you for your testing and sharing of the info you learn! Much appreciated!!!

Just a quick tip, when applying tape to pipe threads start your tape about 2 threads from the end. Pipe threads are tapered and often the edge of the tape will tear off and be left in the pipe because the threads don't fully engage at the end causing contamination and possibly some blockage in the pipe. The same is true for pipe dope. Your videos are always great and very informative.

I found engine restore to be a very good product.
I had a 1983 Honda accord with over 250k miles on it and it was losing power so I tried ER and the person I sold the car to put another 185k miles on it before pulling the engine. The car was scrapped but the engine is still in use in another car.

id like to see Restore used in one of those really badly damaged lawnmower engines and see before and after shots of cyl walls, bearings and journals, etc.

I don't think it does anything for the journals, bearings, or bearing surfaces, only the cylinder walls in sealing the rings. Basically if you're rings are shot, like I had with a Honda Civic I had recently, it helped tremendously

I’ve used Engine Restore for years on older 4 cylinder engines. It’s great stuff. Keep using this on your tractor & any other older vehicles you own.
After watching your videos, I added Restore to my 4.3 V6 Blazer. It has 203,000 miles and the compression was low. It also was hard to start and had a noticeable stumble off idle. I was having to add oil every couple hundred miles. After adding the Restore, all of the issues disappeared almost immediately. The engine runs smoothly and has no stumble. It starts easier and hasn't used any oil since I put the product in. It's almost too good to be true! Thanks for sharing all of your data with the world.

@@ProjectFarm ...been using Restore since early 80's when it came out. most noticeable results i found were in low HP 4 cyl engines with over 70k miles, i use half what they recommend and it never caused any leaks!! perhaps a test on water wetters, had noticeable results with the Redline product. enjoy your videos. I have been using restore since the late 80's. Always worked very well. I just recently got a used 05 gmc 4.3 with 163k. Added a bottle made for V8's and in the same day it ran noticeably better. I dont use test equipment. But its quieter and burns less oil and runs a great deal smoother.

I have been using engine restorer in numerous engines over the years and it seems to be one of the few products that has proven to improve engine compression almost immediately. It has now shown to continue improving compression based on your experiment which is reassuring. I run it in my 5.9 cummins and she seems to like it a lot.

I used this stuff in my 89 Ford F350 with a 351w almost a decade ago, when it was in a more "pop can like" container. Motor had a ton of blow by and smoked blue on start up pretty badly. I put a couple cans through the motor over a couple of oil changes and it almost entirely fixed my issues. Finally replaced the motor this year after even this stuff wouldn't band-aid the issue. I don't know what that stuff does, but it sure does it well. Great video and follow up.

I watch a lot of automotive CZcams videos and may I just say I trust you so much that i decided to dump Restore in my 98 4runner (253,000 miles) with fingers crossed. After less than an hour of leaving the Walmart parking lot, the idle seemed to even out and it ran like a dream and had much more power. The engined quieted down and my gas mileage increased! I combined it with AT-205 for my seeping seals. I trust modern science more than I trust automotive purists that call additives snake oil. Thanks for doing these tests and helping people save money. You're doing the Lord's work brother.

AT-205 is good for oil seals. but you gotta add it at every oil change after the first time you use it or your seals will eventually shrink back up. Ask me how i know. haha. Same is true with restore... which is fine. a couple bucks for a can of goop is a HELL of a lot cheaper than a new engine or vehicle.
Liqui moly motor oil saver is great for seals.
I'm not a big additive fan but restore worked on my old bmw 4 cylinder big time. Near new compression and a very smooth happy engine again. Oil consumption literally went to 0 between changes! I, like this video used the 6 cylindrical can, I could only find 6 and 8 cylinder cans, they do make a 4 cyl can. I've since used it in my porsche which I'm super picky about and the engine is very happy and my mileage increased as well!

Old video I know, but after watching these videos I decided with some urging from a friend to try Engine Restore in an old utility tractor I had with a 3 cylinder diesel engine. I got pretty much the same results. The engine quit smoking white on startup, it had more power, started better, and ran smoother. Thank you Todd for all of your hard work in testing products for us, I appreciate your efforts!

If you stack the filter element in a vice and squeeze the oil out its much easier to see contaminates and shavings. Thanks George.(The guy who showed me this trick).

yeah i learned about the teflon tape tip the hard way, my first job was prepping parts for welding in a fabrication shop, they started to grow so they took on other types of work and i was asked to wrap teflon tape onto all of the pneumatic parts when i had time in between grinding/flapping and i had never used teflon tape before so when they went to do a hydro pressure test one day, half of the fittings leaked and at around 800psi a hydro leak is basically a water blade and the stream hit a piece of plywood that was acting as a make shift wall next to the test bay and cut a hole through it, luckily nobody was hurt but after that i was schooled really quickly on the right way to wrap fittings lol i still double check myself to this day by "tightening" the fitting in my fingers to make sure its on right

I strongly prefer liquid Teflon. It easier to use and doesn't unwrap obviously, and easier to keep small parts of the tape from getting into your delivery lines and plugging something.
I remember it the same way. tighten the tape on.
Yeah, that lefty loosely, righty tightly is fine most times. But then you could have my neighbor's problem of buying an old 1964international delivery box van to convert to a fishing/camping buggy. Back then, there were left hand threads on the left side wheels. (The idea was that right hand threads could potentially back off going down the highway.)
First thing he needed to do was take off the tires and wheels for replacement so he could transport it around his workspace. When I showed up, he was hotter than tar on a tin roof, with a torch trying to heat the studs to remove the lugnuts. I got him shut down before he melted more than his dignity.There wasn't any Teflon rolling involved, but just remember that rules only apply till they don't.
I know this is an old video, but I just used engine restore in my 97 wrangler with straight 6 @195k miles. Had lifter noise, almost sounded like a diesel when running, used a can of this and in a few minutes it started quieting up, took it for a few trips and no lifter noise at all now. Amazing stuff. I've followed your channel for some years now, I had to follow up with these engine restore videos because I recently added some to my old 3 cylinder Mitsubishi. And man, this stuff really makes it feel smooth in acceleration and throttle response. I had to come double check your videos to make sure I wasn't imagining it!

Got a test for you. New vehicles with the synthetic oil are now saying go 10,000 miles before changing the oil and filter. This get's stuck in my craw as I'm from the old "3,000 mile or 3 month" oil change era. I've talked to several technicians asking what they do with their OWN car and I have yet to find one that goes by the new guidelines. Experiment Synthetic Oil: catch some of the oil from a 5,000 mile change and also from a 10,000 mile oil change and compare to a sample of new oil. Compare visibly along with your lubricity tester. Let's see what we think after all the data is in. Thanks! Jim.

I had an 07 corolla bought new. Put 8000 miles every 3 months until 2014 and not one engine oil related issue. Sold the car to family and its still going strong.
I do long oil changes on my car 16 Maxima, 15000-20000 with also using Archoil 9100 and Mobil 1. Great results and my oil analysis has looked great.
I would like to add that the last 2 cars of mine burn a qt of per 1000 miles. So, 10 added plus the initial 5 in my case all I would gain is 1000 miles. I buy 6 qts. Change the oil add at the 1000 and ignore the level and change at 3000. Only way to win. Also has anyone noticed they no longer have a low oil light? It because they designed them to sacrifice oil for mpg.

Another excellent video. One tip I'd like to mention when doing the dirty job of changing oil filters is that if you wrap a small plastic garbage bag around the old filter as you're removing it you'll probably catch most of the residual dirty oil that's in the filter and galleries.

A year ago I bought a restored 65 GTO powered by a hot 406 CI smallblock Chevy. Though it ran fine I soon realized it was burning a lot of oil, about a quart per tank of gas. Based on your video I added some Restorer. I checked the oil at the next fillup and, like clockwork it was down a quart. However today, one tankful later, I checked the oil and the level hasn't budged. If this keeps up it will be a miracle. Thanks for the useful service you provide.

I really appreciate that you provide updates like this and your ford pickup. I am currently helping my 13 year old cousin get a ford 8n going. I know that when my grandpa parked it, it was smoking so bad. So, probably like you, I look for cleaners and performance enhancers that will get us by until we can tear stuff down and fix them. Right now, he's just learning and to keep his interest up, I am just looking to get it started and running without fouling plugs. If he has a continued interest, then we can go farther into it. This product is fantastic. I used it 25* years ago in an old 74 bronco w/ 302 that smoked like a freight train and used oil like an airplane. 1 bottle and all the problems vanished. And I never added it again! It just took one bottle. That truck ran like a sewing machine for the next 5 years until I sold it. I’ve since used it over the years in just about everything I own .

Ahhhh! You already did a video on Restore! The stuff is pretty amazing, isn't it :) I've been using it for around 25 yrs or so, and it's the only product I've ever consistently recommended to my friends and customers. The first motor I ever used it on was a Ford 289 that I was getting ready to bore and rebuild, so I figured what the heck, nothing to lose. I was stunned by how well it worked after about the first 100 miles, it was like a totally different engine. I'm glad you were able to share this product with others, as it may save people some money on repairs or let them keep their vehicles/equipment a bit longer!
I've been a Master Mechanic for almost 3 decades. One thing I share with you is my general dislike of 'pouring fixes' into any motor. But, when I come across one that works, I use it. One other good product is Slick50. The main reason I mention it here is as a warning. If an engine is in a condition that using Restore will make a marked difference, is that people should not use a product like Slick50 in that motor, instead of Restore. I've had people come to me either asking if the one product can be switched for the other etc...etc... They essentially do the opposite things, and adding Slick50 to a tired motor can often make things worse. Just a side tip, I guess. Keep up the awesome videos!

I recently bought a 2001 duramax that was severely neglected before I bought it, and it consumed oil to the tune of 1 quart per 1000 miles. It's got 270k miles on it and I drive it a lot, and the blue haze coming out the tail pipe was embarrassing, plus it had a lumpy idle. Because I follow your channel and see that you try decently hard to be scientific in your testing, I put a can of Restore in to see what it did. After only an hour of operation I noticed the idle was much smoother and it seems the exhaust is much cleaner, though I've only really driven it at night so far. I'm hoping this product really helps because I don't want to tear down the motor to replace seals. Thanks for your work, love the channel, it's one of my favorites!

The smoke persisted however, at least until I moved to another state, and now it's cleared up significantly. I blame junk fuel where I used to live, as it quickly cleared up after a few tanks in my new town. So now it's running great and (mostly) smoke free

Thank you for the update, and this was a timely and much needed one..on the longer term effects of using that product. Like you mentioned, feel most of the additives are not worth spending money on, but a few do some good things. Appreciate your work, and your findings, and this is one of the few channels I really believe in. Please tell us the other additives you found that work. Like wasn't Best Line one of your top performers? And no, I'm not connected to any of the companies either, work in a completely different field.

Excellent test & result. I’ve used engine restorer 30 yrs ago in a 130k mile olds Omega. It worked for restoring power and compression.
I recently used it again and I noticed the formulation are quite different. The 90s version was grayish with a fine silt like texture. The modern version is blue with a much finer texture more like ink.

I love this product and use it religiously on most of my vehicles. It helps restore compression with worn rings, however if you have cracked ringlands or melted pistons it wont mend metal back together. Thank you for an update video!

I think you should start a little long run test where you try as many rust preventative strategies and coatings as possible. Everyone hates rust and everyone has their opinions as to what works and what doesn't. An issue is how well the rust preventative coating works if it's compromised, like through a scratch. I've heard that with things such as rubberized coatings, they work well until they get scratched or chipped off, because then water and whatnot makes its way behind the coating and the entire thing just rusts underneath the coating. And I've also heard that some treatments might actually accelerate the rust by pulling in moisture like a sponge. You might could start off with a longer video showcasing what exactly you're gonna do and then have short update videos every once in a while showing how everything's holding up. Have the test pieces in multiple different situations, such as pieces that are stuck in the ground, pieces just sitting outside, exposure to salt water, exposure to fresh water, exposure to different chemicals, exposure to debris and abrasives(simulating say, the undercarriage of a car or truck, which is frequently subject to stuff getting kicked up from the road). I don't know, I just think this could be a series of videos that could really be useful for a lotta people. Not really anything that should require too much effort. Should just be treating the test pieces initially and checking up on them every few months.

I added a bottle to my 07 scion . 3000 miles later oil consumption went from 2 quarts every 3000 miles down to about 3/4 quarts in the same distance. I have no idea what changed inside the engine but my fuel miliage also went up by 3 to 4 mpg average ( was 25 to 28mpg now I'm 28 to 33.) I'm impressed as hell

Honest question ( see my other post on this point).....did it affect your VVT ( Variable-Valve-Timing) system?.....as it uses incredibly small oil passages to hydraulically alter the valve timing gear position.
Does not work on my 2trfe tacoma. Just tried it for 1month now... i even used more than u were suppose to also.. Failed.

Thanks for the update! Im so glad that someone is speaking out on what a fine product that ENgine Restore is. I only wish that it was available back when I was younger. As I would have saved a great deal of money by keeping my older trucks longer and not buying the new ones when I did.

Really? I've served along with USAF medical in surgery in the Army, and I have to say that other than the cultural shift of one service to the next. No one was awful. Served with the Navy as well for a mission. Very interesting.
Now, I remember one time having to drive to Las Vegas just to get a flu shot, which wasn't latex filled and those USAF medics were awful. She saw I had never had a shot for chicken pox. I said I've already had it. She said the pox or the shot? The pox. Well, studies have proven that new chicken pox viruses can get around having had it before. I said, I don't need that. So she stuck me in my humerus and put in the shot.
Yeah. The humerus is the arm bone between your elbow and shoulder. I wanted to scream. Who the hell stabs somebody that deep with a shot? I felt the vibration through my bones as the tip hit bone. Cruel women. Hurt for days. Shots go in muscles. Medics in vaccines do a lot more shots that Surgical Techs, but I can assure you, I'd do a better job on myself!

Great videos- thanks for making them. Besides using the new compression gage, I think you should have also tested compression with the old gage since we don’t know how well they are calibrated. At least using the old gage as well, we know the readings would be consistent. I know the old one only goes to 300 psi, but it wouldn’t have hurt to try it. Thanks again for the videos.

I work for Auto Zone and the following statement is in no way shape or form the opinion of AutoZone or any of it's entities.
Many of our commercial customers who run an automotive repair shop or used car lot swear by restore.
I personally have an old Ford 460 and the compression was down near 120 psi and a can of restore later and some Lucas HM stabilizer to quiet the valves and I'm back to 140-150 psi across all 8.
@KARLOZ LOPEZ No, no it won't. Been there and have done that. If it was that easy then I'd say Project Farm would have just put thicker oil in his tractor.
@KARLOZ LOPEZ Thicker oil doesn't flow as well, so you would end up starving the top of the engine of the lubrication it needs. It's a good way to burn your engine up.

thats a 16% increase in compression. you can say "snake oil" or placebo all you want but a gauge doesn't lie. 20 psi is 20 psi.

I tried Engine Restore when it first came out, in an old worn out Ford inline six. Before Restore, it had severe blow-by and almost no power. After treatment the blow-by was almost nonexistent and it had a noticeable power improvement.

Kind of similar story for me but it was a '68 Dart with a 225 slant 6. That was prolly 25 yrs ago now and anytime I've noticed a loss of compression in a vehicle I've tossed a can in.

One trick I have learned about applying Teflon tape is flip the roll over so that the tape is pulling from the bottom and use your hand to keep the tension on it.
Basically flip it 180 degrees from how you had it in this video.

Black stone labs is not certified and their tests are not very thorough. I've seen multiple oil tests from them that were way off compared to other certified labs. Sorry, I'm kinda an oil snob.

CAT labs available through your local CAT dealer are pretty thorough and consistent.
Word of caution though, they are going to see the elevated copper, silver, and lead and throw up all kinds of red flags for bearing wear.
It may not hurt to submit an oil sample and a sample of the Restore together to give them an idea of what you are doing.
If you speak to the local dealer they should be able to help you.
It's called an SOS kit and parts should sell you one.

I first used the big can of restore in 93 in a worn out 84 K-car. It was like a miracle. I have used it in all my personal vehicles since. It takes about 700 miles to get the full effect improving compression, mileage, and power, and reducing oil consumption an amazing amount. I re-add a big can at about 12,000 miles when I change oil. Yes.... I have gone this long on changes for many years and recently gave away a 90 302 Ford car with 400,000 miles on it, and it was clean inside. (It was a quest)
Today's oils are far superior to anything made even 10 yrs ago. Restore is truly a "mechanic in a can".
I have been a certified aircraft mechanic and inspector for 50 yrs and a life long hotrodder.

Yup, I agree, i.. really made a difference. I used to work on cars too ASE cert mechanic, worked in shops for almost 10 years. the only additive i'm going to actually use ive known about restore for many years. And its nice to know that PF actually took the time to test this product..
anonymous I think it has Teflon or softer metals that fill in the gaps.
I have used engine restore and full synthetic oil in my 2007 gmc canyon. Change oil every 10000 miles. Engine runs great.

probably not the best idea to use additives in a modern engine thats still relatively "new", unless its 150k+ miles and showing health issues, or has been mistreated. probably wont hurt, but probably not doing anything either. Avoid any magic in a can stuff until you get compression readings coming back on the low side. Then at worst, any damage caused will only accelerate the eventual need for a rebuild or replacement.

compression and oil status is EVERYTHING with an old diesel like this, the injectors use OIL PRESSURE to fire the injectors, more compression has been believed to increase oil pressure, so this tractor could have gained some good power numbers!

Another quality video. I got hold of some engine restore after watching for my 1.6 diesel engine van on 120 thousand miles and I feel it's made the van idle a lot better. I'd like to say it feels smoother on the power too but like you said, maybe it's a placebo affect 🤷♂️
