    Came here after the NYTimes article. Yes, this is the real thing. It's not 100% technique and noise without any care for the sound that's coming out like 99.9% of sopranos today. The sound is beautiful, focused, and cuts through you like a knife. Thrilling actually.

      Unfortunately, the unknowing public equate a big voice with a great voice! She still has a lot of improving to do, especially with her Diction! It is terrible! High Notes are well placed and pretty good, though! But she needs to seriously work on that crackling sounding and overly forced vibrato in her middle range. I am suprised she doesn't have a handle in that middle voice, when the higher vocal range is usually the most difficult to control! She may yet have a career, especially due to her affiliation with the Met! Best Wishes!

    She has every attribute a Dramatic Soprano needs. The challenge that comes with that is the talent of understanding the scale of what you have. What is intimate vs what is openly operatic? Even in Wagner this is where the art is. To hear her sing Lieder ist something special. She sheds the onion leaves of volume and too much compression. This is the greatest challenge a singer ever faces. This example is at the birth of her career. One can hope that her sense of self continues to reveal itself. If she goes that route, I believe it would be next to impossible to stop her. At this point in a career to have such a voice is luxury and she has since received awards. But the rewards of a career in this crazy business come to not only those who receive God's largess in native talent, but goes to those obsessed enough to ferret out every last drop of intimacy and truth. The more she achieves that the more will laurels be laid at her feet where ever she walks. I will keep her in my prayers.
    Of the new singers coming up, and I have yet to hear her live, she is very promising, talented and a beautiful woman.

    When people start comparing your soprano voice to the great Varnay and
    the legendary Flagstad, there's a whole lot more going on than just "The
    next best new singer." Georg Solti once commented: "I once heard 30
    sopranos audition for a part in a Mozart Opera; none of their voices
    moved me... until I heard Kiri (te Kanawa) sing! Here was something very
    special; a one in a million voice!" The very same thing is happening
    here! Yes, Lise is very young, but she already has that magnificent
    "buttery" fullness of tone, top notes to DIE for (3:19), and, YES, her vibrato
    comes in a few seconds after the note begins - Varnay style - just the
    way I like it! Take note people: you'll be hearing this very remarkable
    voice - in all the major Wagner & Strauss soprano roles - for a very
    long time to come; just think what this Norwegian wonder will do with
    Isolde... and Elektra... and Brunhilde?!! PLEASE support Lise's career
    and buy her debut album on Decca (which includes "Dich teure Halle");
    mine is already on the way... we live in very privileged times. MD

      @VivaRenata Před 4 lety +4

      I can agree that this is a very fine developing dramatic soprano, who gives us all great hope that all is not lost - yet. However, it's a disfavor to compare her to Flagstad. Just in this aria, I hear that her articulation and use of consonants is to a great degree modelled on Nilsson, and Swedish though I may be, I think she should toss those recordings in the trash where they belong and pay more attention to the vocal style and interpretation of her great compatriot. And of course, you can not compare anyone to Flagstad, ever!

    • @gardenphoto
      @gardenphoto Před 4 lety +3

      Oh, I very much beg to differ!
      Firstly, it is NOT a disfavor to compare Davisen to Flagstad (no one, not even Flagstad, is untouchable; please remember that she agreed to have Elisabeth Schwarzkopf sing ALL her high notes - quite deceptively! - in her recording of Tristan und Isolde with Furtwängler), but the very highest of sincere compliments.
      And secondly, "toss Nilsson's recordings in the trash where they belong???" I'm not sure what planet you're from but THAT is a disfavorable remark for the ages! There is not a single opera lover, opera critic, musicologist, opera conductor or Wagner soprano, living or deceased, that doesn't/didn't rate Birgit Nilsson at the very HIGHEST LEVEL of her profession... but we should, of course, take your word for her worthiness?
      In retrospect, it might just be egregious to compare Davidsen to Flagstad: Nilsson was far and away the better singer, the better stage actress, utterly incomparable and therefore a more worthy predecessor.
      I stand corrected.

    • @VivaRenata
      @VivaRenata Před 4 lety +2

      @@gardenphoto ALL her high notes = two high C's, eighth notes in Act II as you surely know. Unless you're more ancient than I am, you've hardly seen Flagstad on stage (I have seen Nilsson many times) and therefore can not judge her acting. Nilsson was superb in Strauss and the best Elektra one can wish for, but she sacrificed the low and middle registers for security in the high notes and this, in my opinion, makes her less suitable in the Ring and Tristan, for instance. Nilsson's German is not very good and her rhythm often becomes contorted because of her attention to the high notes. Unlike Flagstad, she did not have perfect pitch and is often sharp. But of course, Nilsson was foremost in her generation. And let's put that story about the two high C's to rest. It is well known and the only mistake Decca made was not announcing it ahead of time.

    • @gardenphoto
      @gardenphoto Před 4 lety

      @@VivaRenata, I bow entirely to your obvious knowledge of things Opera, but I must still disagree with your assessment of Nilsson in Wagner; she may have been sharp on occasion - even horribly so - but she was the most THRILLING Wagner soprano-actress I've ever seen and heard; we may agree to disagree.
      It was EMI (and not Decca) that allowed the aforementioned Tristan debacle to happen (the CEO of EMI was Schwarzkopf's husband!); yes, let's put those high C's to rest.
      If I've learned one thing in life it's that opera people are enormously passionate about everything operatic (yes, Renata Scotto - who is now 85 years young - was a simply fabulous bel canto and verismo singer-actress in her day; VivaRenata, indeed!); I will try, in future, to be more patient with the opinions and opera knowledge of others; even I could be wrong on ocassion. ;)

      ariane csonka but he utterly disrespects the conductor in doing so. The point of this song is joy unbridled.... it sounds very “bridled” at this tempo to me. And the singer handles the actual tempo perfectly well! If a singer can’t do the required range of tempo for an aria, she shouldn’t sing it (not that this is the case with Lise) Maybe more lushness is let out of her voice in this excruciatingly slow version, but it’s missing the spark for me, and the knowledge that the tempo is flat out wrong and some rhythms are off due to poor management of the orchestra is just plain frustrating.

Yes, the technique, the fullness of tone, the absolute pitch, they are all there. And I’m grateful for that. Yes!!! Wonderful timbre and such line. 28? She's a contender for one of the greats, for sure. That full bodied top b at the end? Brava!
    The orchestra were far too slow and 'un'energized for my tastes. The grandeur and majesty come from the juxtaposition of the line & legato over the precise and almost frantic accompaniment that embodies Elisabeth's excitement. And that ending? We moved further into larghetto almost adagio and let ALL the steam out.

      That's because Plácido Domingo should not be allowed within 10 miles of a podium. Come to think of it, he should not be allowed within 10 miles of any baritone role. And while at it, within 10 miles of any tenor role at this stage in his life. Time for him to go home to his wife, collect his pension, go fishing, and enjoy his grandchildren.

    Davidsen may be the best jugendlich (I don't hear a hochdramatische, not yet) to appear on the scene since Studer. That's a long time to have waited. I know she will soon be singing the Wesendonck and Vier Letzte Lieder. I hope they record her professionally in these songs, for future commercial release. Could she set a new standard? That said, a pity about the conducting here.

    How very sad, for Lise Davidsen's voice is so much better here, 8 years ago, than yesterday in the last night of the Proms 2023. The vibrato is just beginning to be apparent in this video, but now, sad to say, every note was blighted by a harsh, unpleasant juddering. She needs to take a year off to study with a teacher in the Garcia tradition and get rid of that ugly "spread tone" my wonderful teacher Oda Slobodskaya knew just how to eradicate. If she is to mature to full glory, for she has a fine instrument, she needs to model herself on Flagstad and Nilsson who never forced or became squally and unsteady.

    Qu'on compare cette chanteuse avec Flagstad me sidère. Bon courage.
