  • In July 2018, the Commissioner Eastern, Luke Moroivalu visited yaqona farms at the village of Sawaieke and said that the rural millionaire pro- ject was progressing well because they were working together.
The rural millionaire project is the result of a joint collaboration between Government, the church and the vanua, which started four years ago.
Sawaieke youth leader Viliame Lewanavanua said after four years of planting yaqona they had managed to harvest their produce.
The target set for each farmers is to plant 1000 yaqona seedlings each year.
From this project, Mr Lewanavanua and his youth group have built 11 new houses around their village. “We fill out the profiles by stating our aims, target and after four years we review this,” he said.
In addition, Mr Lewanavanua and his youth group had started the plan by putting in $50 per plant. After harvest this is then sold at $100 to $150 per kilogram.
He intends to encourage more farmers to plant more yaqona because it has a good market value and will certainly help generate rewarding incomes for families.
