EXTREME FREEZING CAMPING. COLDEST NIGHT ALONE
Vložit
- čas přidán 4. 12. 2022
- This is one of the coldest nights I have ever camped alone in the wilderness. -41 is absolutely freezing and dangerous. But I am well prepared and sheltered from the extreme cold in my canvas tent.
I have lots of wood for my wood stove. I have many players of clothes, food, tea, and a -40 sleeping bag.
I can feel the air hit my lungs when it is this cold. It almost takes my breath away. But there is something I absolutely love about breathing that bitter cold.
On this night an extreme cold warning sets in, making it magical.
I am in the remote wilderness and there is no one near me for miles around. But I have a first ad kit, and a way to contact home in case anything goes wrong.
Come with me for the adventure, and stay for the extreme cold. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Hey folks. I am not offering prizes. The scammers are out in full force. If you don't see a check by my name, then the comment is not from me. My account is verified. Scammers are not.
Can I go be with you on spring. I just can’t do -40° too cold ,I can barely do 45° here in California 🤣🤣😊
Wouldn't it make sense to leave the snow on the roof as insulation? Edit: Jay, I forgot to say thank you for the awesome video and sharing your experience with us 😊 God bless you. P.S. Watched your wonderful video start to finish!
Only tuna for me Jay! all the rest 🤢
Continue to stay safe and of course
Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄
And God bless as always 🙏🏻
-17 BELOW IN MONTANA, THATS THE TEMPERATURE, WINDCHILL ONLY -27 BELOW AND STILL GO TO WORK
That was the great definition of winter😅Appreciate your video😊
When the snow squeaks like that when you walk on it, you know you are starting to approach real cold.
When snow becomes ice it gets louder... :))))
WHERE ARE YOU FROM
Stationed at MINOT ND coldest ground temp I remember -25...cup of hot coffee vaporizes and plastic garbage bag crunch like potato chips! LOL
Yep, his first step told me it is really cold. Michigan resident.
Know that sound real well
I am a born and raised in Montana guy. This brought back memories of camping with my Dad in a hunting cabin… no power… in the middle of winter…. when I was a kid. Cabin is in Big Timber, MT and surrounded by wilderness. An oil lamp and a big old cast iron “Garland”, wood burning cook stove were the amenities. The sound of the snow squeaking…. and the sound of the wood being split…. brought it all back. I think that when it gets that cold outside… the air almost smells different…. Anybody else find that to be true? At -30 F and colder…. on a windless night…. the still quietness is truly amazing…. only if you have a toasty, roaring fire. 😊 Thanks for the video 👍✨
I know that smell you're talking about, when the air is that cold.
Born and raised also... I know exactly what your talking about
It def smells diff and I can hear the squeaky snow now too! I miss the Montana cold!
I live in the Wyoming cold. I enjoy having contests with my friends to see who can last outside the longest when it's cold, especially below -20.
Nao sei nada dr frio !
Brrrrrrrrr
Deus me livre.
Moro no Brasil pais que s calor praticamente o ano inteiro.
E no verao suave chega a fazer 40 graus acima de zero .

When I was fourteen, 50 years ago, I remember walking to school in -44 F. The impacted of that 6 block walk in a pristine frozen world ignited a lifelong passion for it. Thank you for this, it brings me back.
Did you also have to walk uphill both ways?

I used to go skating down at the rink at 37 below. The sound of the snow walking home is a flashback.
That is 22C was outside in this whearher every day , it is nit still -35C I experienced that

My dad made a tent like that with 2x2’s back in the late 50’s and an old green canvas tent! We would camp out in New Hampshire in the winter. Thanks for the memories! I remember using newspaper under the sleeping bag on the cots for extra protection from the cold and it worked great!
I love blizzards. To whoever is reading this, Good luck! Happy New Year to you. Don't stress, everything will be fine. No matter what difficulty you are facing right now, you can overcome it! You are strong and brave.
Thank you, I needed to hear that 😊
I needed to hear that, too. Thank you, Lord bless and keep you💝🙏
Thank you buddy
Thank you for those words of encouragement. Happy New Year to you and yours and God bless you...

Best thing about winter camping .. no bugs!
Just as you like doing the camping in those extreme cold temperatures, I really love watching the videos where you do that. The way you get set up, your sleep system, the stove, what you cook for dinner. Thanks so much.
4 years watching this channel, I and whoever else don't think we could abandon good quality content. You're gonna grow in the future 🙏🏽
Thanks Rusty. Always appreciate seeing comments from you. Jay
That scenery is breathtaking. Nature is so beautiful, especially in winter, it’s like something out of a storybook
I remember it being that cold when I lived in Alaska. I never camped in it, but I walked and hiked in it... and there was something magical about hearing the crackle of the cold and the "squeaky" footsteps on the snow.
I’m almost eighty four years old, but my heart is with you when you’re camping 🏕️ out in the wilderness and cold.I just love camping with its limits. Cooking 🥘 and eating in the wilderness , things always taste better over a wood fire 🔥 and out of the can meats- deviled ham is good for sandwiches with eggs and toast and coffee……Have a great time and think of me when you’re camping out there 🔥🔥.D M. B.
Out of the can, tuna is my go to. If I have the option to heat up a canned meat...then corned beef hash with eggs. I absolutely love your set up. Thanks for sharing.
Corn beef hash with eggs is heavenly.
@@rockycvs3 Agreed.
I dunno. It's okay, but I still love refried beans and eggs better. You need the additional ingredients of cheese and hot sauce, but that's overall easy.
Cat food and cheese, just kidding
I can’t say I understand people loving the cold but watching you brings a new respect to those who love to get out and camp. Blessings to you sweetie
Shredded low salt Spam. Shred it with just a fork. Add diced boiled egg, 2 tsp. Pickle relish, 1/8th cup onion, squirter mustard mix in Miracle-whip to moisten, salt and pepper, wedge of Velvetta ( as much as you like. )Fill as many buns as you have spread for. Wrap in foil, freeze or refrigerate what you don't want to eat now. Warm bun on stove. Yummy!
Those Ariel views with the smoke from the chimney are awesome. You’re blessed Jay. Thanks for taking us along.
Thanks Jim!
Who's Ariel?
@@linebrunelle1004 The Little Mermaid, dude. I didn't know she got into cinematography, though.

Don’t think ppl realise how cold that is. Always amazes me that German soldiers were fighting in Russia in minus 40 and only had summer uniforms. It must of been hell.
It's not that bad
They deserved hell
@@SeriousSam2you been brainwashed by jews?

Lemmon pepper, or spicy kippers or sardines I can eat two or three times a week! Smoked oysters and muscles are really yummy too.
Happy for you Jay. Enjoy as often as possible!
Man I feel the same way. I grew up in Alaska on the kenai peninsula and I always just loved the cold temps better then anything. Just something about being able to get cozy when you know it's freezing outside. Great clips thanks!
I’ve traveled to a lot of places but I fell in love on my first visit to Alaska. I know right where you are. So beautiful! Live free.
It's my 40th today, what a great end to a great day, pint of Guinness and a extra cold episode from Jay, thanks for the great content!
happy birthday mate!! hope its been a good day for you.
Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday to YOU!
Happy 40th
Hope you had a good birthday!
You mentioned a couple times how much you loved being out in the extreme cold (with the right gear and also inside a warm tent). I get it. Grew up in Michigan, and winter was probably my favorite time of year. The snow, the cold, the more the better! Something primal about the challenge of man against the elements, the solitude of winter, when no one else is out, the beauty of the forest covered in snow, the squeak and crunch of the snow below zero. The smoke rising above the cabin, the warm glow of the fire. Nice.
I actually got happier when the fire was going! The squeak of below zero snow is awesome. And your correct, very primal.
In the '60s I was stationed at Kincheloe AFB in the UP. I'm from the south. Upon my after midnight arrival, I had to walk five blocks to report in. It was 9° below zero, and all I was wearing was a unlighed rain coat, summer weight uniform, and low quarter shoes. I thought I had arrived in HELL and hell was COLD.
Same. I wish winter was year round…
@@rainedyani8505 Are you nuts
@@barrybeatty6139 ....the only way I enjoy winter is when it's gone! I live in Michigan and we never know when Spring is officially here regardless of what the calendar tells us! Stay warm!
I'm 70 years old next year,I think you are awsome, so brave to be you must be great I admire you save traveling my freind God bless you amen
That sound of snow, when walking around at those Temps is just so recognizable.
Thanks Jay. Those drone shots are stunning. It takes a true outdoors person to be out in that cold of weather. I've personally been out in that low of temps once when visiting Chena Hot Springs Alaska in early February several years ago. We saw the Aurora. I've never been that cold since having that experience. It was a great memory. Glad you are sharing your memories with us. Looking forward to your next video.
The extreme cold always makes nature so still and serene .
This desert dweller is fascinated by the icy cold experience! Really enjoyed this video. Thank you for sharing.
I've experienced similar life threateningly cold conditions myself. One time I was in my warm bed in Ireland when at around 2 am I woke up to find half of the blanket not covering my legs. I was quick to rectify the situation but it was a close call nonetheless and happy to say I survived it.
😂
That was a very close call 😂
Dear Jay, this is definitely one of my top favorite videos of the channel. It is impressive how cozy and comfortable you make it look under such harsh conditions. And we are talking about actual Polar temperatures!
My favorite canned meat is Irish corned beef! And as far as thanking us for making to the end of the video, I have to say to you, not only do we enjoy it all the way through, but we wish the video was even longer! 😆😆
I love this comment. Thanks Nikos.
Have you thought about getting a heat powered fan to put on your stove? It might be a way to circulate heat from the ceiling to the floor
Good
Yes, a fan, great idea!
That’s a great idea 💡
I've seen fans on top of stoves in other off grid channels. Does make a difference 🏕️🏕️🏕️🏕️
Just ❤️the simplicity of your videos. I’m here in Northern California and the most memorable trip of my life was to Canada 4 years ago with my cousin and I can not wait to return
I was in Korea in January/February of 1973. Serving In the Marines. We were on a cold winter exercise. Our camp was on top of the highest point possible. Our radios work line of sight so had to above all the other units. Our second night there it got cold very cold -40 with 40 mph wind making fell like -81. We were in insulated 12 man tents we had two kerosine heaters. We stayed warm enough. Then 3 days it got up to 70 + degrees. We were on that mountain for 45 days eating C rations.
When i was young(66 now) i loved camping in brutal cold. Of course astronomy is what got me out to remote and dark places but the camping and skywatching was my thing. I have been watching these videos just this past few weeks and i sure got the urge to go and get away from things for a few days😁
My dad used to make us kids go look at the thermometer when it was -40. He actually gave us a ride to school when it got that cold. I grew up in Northern Wisconsin.
CINEMATOGRAPHY IS EXCELLENT 🎥🎥🎥🎥📸📹
That's that cold 🥶 snow crunch. When the snow sounds like that you know it's c-c-cold.

“This is what cold sounds like.” I’m sitting in a 70 degree living room with a blanket on me and I got chills when you began walking through the snow. I associate that sound with painful cold!
70 and a blanket?!
It only hurts if you let it. Or if you're unprepared.
I love those bitter cold nights and early mornings, it’s like sound freezes, breaks and falls to the ground before it reaches you. So quiet and peaceful!
Tuna and onion splash of vinegar toasted, my favourite, I'm in England 🇬🇧
As someone from the north of New Zealand where winter doesn't really exist, i would LOVE to experience something like this. Summer is nice and all, but i want to experience REAL cold.
I can tell you from personal experience, the Novelty of extreme cold wears off Quickly.
Real cold is fine in small doses. I live in the Upper Midwest in the U.S. and we've had plenty of winters where the wind chill hits -45F, or about -43C and after about 5 minutes of 35+ mph winds blasting your face and exposed hands you begin to experience excruciating pain in those exposed areas.
@@blainclatworthy5423 im sure it does. But thats not going to stop me.
@@davewilliams5721 Well, i wouldn't be truely experiencing the cold if i didnt expect SOME issues like that. I would obviously be well prepared, and ready if i was going to commit to experiencing temperatures like that.
Jay, I appreciate you doing what I am not going to do! It is just great to see you having such a good time out in the cold, eating well and getting a good night's sleep! Please stay safe and keep having a wonderful time!!
Glad you take the cold so seriously with the proper clothing and stove to heat your tent. Great video.
Spent 2 seasons running the ice roads with Tli Cho and even living in Saskatchewan for most of my life, that cold up there was something else. You’re a braver man than I for voluntarily going out and camping out there.
I don’t drop out I watch you til the end. Can’t wait til the next video
Usually tuna or salmon for canned. I throw in celery, red, yellow or green bell peppers diced up with fresh cracked black pepper and some red pepper flakes if I feel adventurous. A buddy loves when I make it so I usually make him one as well.
Great videos, by the way! Keep making them. From Antigonish, Nova Scotia
Also, real mayo. But not too much. Don't wanna kill it.
@@patrickpeters8645
Try 2/3 mayo 1/3 sour cream and a few drops of soy sauce. Next level!
Chopped sweet pickles or green onions. Also, a dash of hot mustard powder for a slight kick - compliments the sweetness of the pickles and saltiness of the tuna.
I’m from Texas. God knew where to put me on this earth because he knew I couldn’t handle that kind of cold. Great video! Keep them coming! Jay
I could not take the heat you folks get down there. I would melt.
This is my very first video I watched of yours. And I was very satisfied with the production of it. I would definitely be watching more of your videos as long as you make them
AGREED !!!
I LOVE watching these videos in the FREEZING cold ❄️🥶 with the snow. It's SO BEAUTIFUL.
I live in Louisiana. Every few years it'll get down to 10° or so.. But we are NOT set up for long term Temps like this. I think I would love to live off the GRID like that where there's cold winters and mild summers.
Because, let me tell ya, it gets really hot here in the south during summer.
❤❄✨✨🎅
Toooooo cold for me. Hats off to you Jay. I enjoy watching you love the cold. ❤
This is the kind of winter camping we have been waiting for!
Bitter cold and cozy at the same time, does that make sense?
Thank you Jay!
Thank you for this. It’s one of my favorite times. I was supposedlg drunk and stupid. But had a key to my buddies shanty way out a lake. The temps were wicked in even Northern New York. Thankfully we had a bunch of good old oak and pine to get it going. But it was so awesome bejng our in the middle of a lake all alone. It only went down to 25 below zero. But. I’ll tell. What a thrill it was. Thanks man!
That was fun!
Manchester city UK here wow I can't believe how cold that is . I really love your setup too.
Great watch, thanks for the hard work to bring us along.. as a Canadian on the east coast I appreciate your love and respect for being in the wild when it’s brutally cold. Very best 🍻
I love that. Camping in freezing conditions in the middle of nowhere and away from the troubles of the world…and you can still bust out a Toronto Raptors game. The wonders of technology. Absolutely brilliant.
The "Sound of cold snow" reminds me of living in the Alps ❤️ Thanks!!
Definitely see your Passion That's what makes a good video That's what makes a good video keep coming Jay🥶✌️
When I was working as a diamond driller up in Northern Ontario I lived in a tent similar to yours with 3 other guys. I worked 2 winters in freezing temperatures from November through to late March. From mid December through until the end of February the average day time temperature was around -25 degrees Celsius and night time temperatures were _40 to -45 degrees Celsius. We had lots of canned goods to go along with packages of frozen meats. Each of us took turns making meals and at the drill site we had a 45 gallon drum as our wood stove but had a stove similar to yours in the tent. At the drill site my average meal consisted of canned soup and canned meat with a couple of slices of bread. My favorite canned meat was spam and a can of beans and canned potatoes. I would fry up the potatoes add the beans and the can of spam. It was my favorite meal while at work. To change things up sometimes I would have salmon it came in cans like our soup cans so it made for a nice meal with canned potatoes that again I would fry up on that 45 gallon drum wood stove. I am retired now and I still enjoy my can of spam mixed with beans, canned potatoes but now I also add two eggs that I will make for breakfast now. It's actually quite good. After all spam is made of a piece of pork shoulder put raw into the can and is boiled in hot water until cooked and the result is what you get when open the can
How much were you earning? Was it worth it?
Danny it was in 1974. I was making about $6/hr which was more than the $2.50/hr I made in the factory. The thing is when you are isolated from any towns or cities you can't spend any money so I came out of there with lots of money in the bank. I worked 12 hour shifts, seven days a week. So lots of overtime pay.
@@claudebelanger8524 That's equivalent to about $35 an hour now. Or nearly $3000 for an 84 hour 7 day week. Good money but a lot of work.
The best thing about the video is the man is such a nice guy....
-30 is the coldest I've ever been in, while working the flightline almost 20 years ago on a trip to Eielson AFB, AK. It was a fun trip, but it was definitely chilly. Made me appreciate having a warm room to go to with a hot shower after my shifts.
I live in Fairbanks. I’ve seen -62F here back in the 80’s. There have been days where -45F was the high. I do love the cold.
I love the internal framing. I once owned military surplus modular tenting, which we floored when we lived in it for six months from spring to end of September. The walls would have been a great addition. Lighter canvas is also better, although the windows did provide some light but not enough for through the winter.
One of my favorite videos so far. Lover winter camping. Love to see extremes in weather and temperature. Thanks for bringing us along.
Love the how he shows and tells us what is working and what is not working.
That tent is a great setup, I'd go every weekend no matter how cold with a setup like that. Love these videos, thank you
When you were talking about the ground being freezing temps while the upper air was 80s and 90s, I started thinking it would be cool to have a thermal imaging camera, to capture that extreme difference! I'd love to see something like that! Maybe a shot from outside the tent as well, when it's really cold, and the tent is hot!
This is a cool idea
I love your videos. I always watch right to the end, Jay. I love your enthusiasm for what you do, the opportunity you give us to experience something that might otherwise forever be unattainable (even if it is vicariously), the beautiful nature, and how it all seems to lower my stress and anxiety whenever I watch. Keep doing what you're doing! Thank you!
yes i always look forward to mondays
Hope your anxiety gets better 🤘
Just watching this video was good for the soul, living this experience must have been so uplifting. Sweet video!
I already can't go outside having 26 celcius. I live in the Philippines so we are use to tropical climate. I cannot imagine being there, I won't be able to move a muscle and probably die. Thank you for properly introducing what cold feels like to people who never encountered snow in their life like me.
I live in England so rarely have to endure extreme cold so it's nice to see how you manage in such low temperatures. I'm what I would call a lazy cook - I often throw meat and veggies into the oven to cook like your dinner here, so easy and delicious - one thing I always do is add a peeled onion cut into quarters though. I love roasted onions, and for me they add so much flavour to everything I roast, so if you love your onions it's worth adding one or two to your dinner. I try to make extra veggies and especially onions, then fry them up in the morning and just add a couple of scrambled eggs and it ends up being a delicious breakfast and super easy. Just an idea, which you may already do I know, but just in case you don't lol xx
Out of curiosity, would it be more beneficial to leave the snow on the roof to help insulate or would it just cause an issue once the tent warmed up?
Hi Jay. New subsciber here! Loving your content. I'm just a regular working class guy living in Chicago, IL wishing I was doing what you do. I appreciate living thru good folks like you doing things I only can dream of doing. Keep up the good work brother...
Jay, stop sending the cold temps south of the lake. It's getting so cold here that we have to take the fence post inside at night.
Stay safe, and enjoy your adventures.
haha. I'll be sending them all winter.
You living out my dream. I’ve been dreaming about doing something like this for a decade. Not ready for a solo trip yet and don’t have anyone willing to join me on the experience.

So enjoy watching you in the cold, setting up your tent, the wood stove, cooking, etc. Thanks for sharing.😊
In the 70’s we were in a small Eskimo village on the north slope of Alaska. Before freeze up and before we could get into hunting & ice fishing (no electric) we almost had to depend on canned meat if we wanted meat. We had gone to Anchorage & stocked up on canned goods & those got shipped to us. The canned meat I remember the most was canned whole chickens! Horrible!
First time watcher and I enjoyed this very much!
I live in Northern Ontario and am very accustomed to this snap, crackle, pop type deep freeze that oddly makes everything extra beautiful and accurately described as 'breath taking' which is what this type of cold weather does to you. What ever you do, do not eat a peppermint, cough drop, hot gum or smoke because you will be in a world of hurt from coughing your guts out lol. It's also such 'breath taker' to see the Northern Lights here as well and the colder the temperature, the clearer they are. So blessed to live up here 💚
Wish more guys were as appreciative of weather like you are. Way to go!
I miss you during the summer. This is one of your coldest nights out there. I also watched your three year progression.
To cold for me I'm old and have health issues but I enjoy watching youngsters showing the gear they use and others who build shelters.
The new wood stove is a locomotive.... , especially from the air, and I loved the smokey joe Coleman stove, that's what we called ours, love how super cold it is, especially how your new gear is working, impressive. Tip: if you take a sprig of rosemary with you it will add great flavor to the dish, (cook it with everything in the pan like in the video), take care, great video, be well.
Yep. That stove pushes out the smoke, especially in the bitter cold.
It's always colder in our cabin than it is outside when we first get there. We're in the UP of Michigan and we swim through 3 plus feet of snow to get to it from the road. But once in and unpacked, it's heaven.
I grew up in northern Canada where Halloween was -38 C. In my 20’s I bought a team of 5 sled dogs and did years of winter camping with my team. Coldest was -48 C, without the wind. I still love the cold at 69. Thx for great video.
I watch a lot of these cold weather camping videos. I like that you actually talk in yours
Have you thought to try a wood stove fan to circulate the warm air? Would love to see you try one and review the results.
I love the winter videos, and the drone shots are outstanding! Thanks for making the effort. We really enjoy it.
Awesome video, Jay! Subscribed and liked. I watched the whole thing.
Corned beef everytime - and mix it up in a pan with some potato, carrot and onion. Super comfort food. But also goes great sliced thin in a sandwich with mustard. Yum.
I'm not sure if it's because I live in the south US where we don't get any snow, but I find these camping videos in extreme cold so comforting to watch and I'll put them on during the workday almost like a yule log. Thanks for sharing your journey because people like me who don't witness this weather are fascinated at what it takes to survive in the extreme cold.
Hey Jay. So great to see the beautiful snow again. I don't get to see snow in SoCal. My favorite canned meat is corned beef n hash. I love to fry up with onions and scrambled eggs. Try it sometime, on your show, lol.
Hello Tanya, it rarely gets that cold here in Iowa ✌🖐
Enjoy you talking to us, makes it Way more interesting that way Enjoyed the vid very much…stay healthy and safe travels! :)
I camp like that but in a 4 season tent with no heat source.I am an Alaskan. (Not an Alas- scam, like a person from the lesser 48 who thinks living here is "off the grid" . If you got a tv crew you had a big grid. ) My body kicks out lots of heat. -30 F is no problem except for putting up the tent due to removing an outer mitt. I have had severe frostbite from mountain climbing during the Winter 8 years ago. It takes careful planning on the moisture management vs warmth thing. Great video. Your tent looks fantastic. I'd fireproof it and enjoy the coziness. When your wet clothes freeze its fun to let them freeze in shapes and take pictures. (pants with no one in them, walking or sitting). Have fun!
I love that I can enjoy the extreme cold and NOT have to actually be in it! 😊Thanks for that! I would've fried the cold sandwich in butter just for extra flavor. Maybe next time. Happy new year all!
Oh fuck yeah
