  • Did a fun little update to my van! I made a deck; something I've been thinking about doing for a long time, and finally dove in and got done!
Covid has been weird for van life, so I've been contenting myself with shorter trips and working on updates that'll be fun when i hit the road again (:

Pretty sure Richard was being sarcastic guys.
I could be wrong, but the message I got was basically saying women should solve the world's problems if we think we could it better than men.
It's almost like saying to OP, oh ur a female mechanic? Well if women like you are so great, why don't you go solve world hunger?
OP was happy to take on an occupation that a lot of women don't get into. Like women who decide to become policemen, welders, architects, engineers... they are still choosing fields that are male dominated. It doesn't make them better because they are women, but neither are the men of the same position just because they're men. A person's capabilities and interests aren't restricted to gender.
Men and women at the top (those who have the ability to do things that benefit the world with limited loss) usually don't give a shit about others (people who dont benefit them). Men and women of status do not care to change the world for the better because they have money and they want more. Greed isn't limited to gender and there's plenty of it.

OK, lots of comments from a CZcams “dad”. I am also a photographer so I start there. 1) you have amazingly good composition, color balance and story telling for one so young. I am constantly impressed with the way you are able to develop context and the story into your imagery. 2) Shocking how skilled you are with tools. You go girl! Such artistic talent followed by exceptional execution. 3) get a set of Forstner bits. Instead of cutting notches for your bolt heads a Forstner bit makes a nice clean hole that is as attractive as it is practical. 4) Please, please seal the ends of your boards. Driving in rain will push moisture into the ends of the wood and it will freeze in the winter and expand in the summer and crack. Need a more pressing reason? Cracks=butt splinters etc. 5) you just tell a good story, informative, visually appealing, well executed, you have no where to go but up. I think it is time for some major sponsorship, like tool companies, fashion and notions companies, travel companies, etc, etc. Very best of luck, you are a pro.

    Thanks for watching guys!
    Some notes:
-I used aluminum bars because I didn’t want them to rust, they were cheap, and they were lightweight - you could definitely use stainless steel if you wanted something more rigid. My bars (obviously) flex a little, but they’ve been great so far, and no problems!
(…I may or may not have filmed this video about a month ago, so I’ve had some time to see how they’ve faired)
-The planking I used was cedar planking. I was originally going to buy the plastic type decking boards, but when I was talking it over with the guy at the hardware store we realized the cedar was less expensive, and lighter weight. Plus I got to stain it whatever color I wanted. Just added some top coating to make it weatherproof. (Highly recommend allotting yourself enough time to stain & top coat everything. Takes about a day or two to coat, and then let dry for each.)
-Use a metal-drilling bit for the metal bars.
-I forgot to mention this in the video, but I decided to forgo a ladder for the time being. I’m pretty good at clambering up to get up there, so spending the money seemed silly, and just extra stuff to deal with. After a while my mom pointed out that she has a handy step for putting her kayaks on the roof of her car; it just attaches to your door latch and you can step up. Here’s a link to one similar to what I got (can’t seem to find the one I got): amzn.to/2EYezCy

I manufacture cars. The exterior of vehicles at speed are subject to enormous wind forces and vibrations. Over time I am concerned your fasteners will loosen which may allow something to fly off the van. The simple and proper (and fairly cheap) fix is to replace at least some of the nuts with a nylon inset lock nut. The advantage is if the wood shrinks or the aluminum deforms the fastener will be loose but it won't come off. Have fun. You have a cool van.

Great work Hanna and 4 ****stars just for going it alone and a fifth star* for completion but it never hurts to ask someone that has knowledge in woodworking/decking and I know you din't ask me but I got to tell you that leaving a space between the planks for expansion would have been an excellent idea, with a little luck there is still moisture in your planks so that they may create the shrinkage on there own. Also sealing the ends of the planks to discourage splitting would be a good idea, even a roofing tar like substance would work as the end grain will drink up whatever you apply and once again a great job of just winging it, you are fearless in the project department. Kudos

@@larrybuckner8619 I don't think she's a victim. I also don't think it's appropriate to tell a woman how to feel. We are certainly capable, I don't think that's in question here. Traditionally, we are not encouraged to be in STEM fields, we are not encouraged to be mechanics, or carpenters, so on and so forth. That is undoubtedly societal. The important point here is that inspiration was found in challenging the norm. I believe that is far from a victim mentality. Even so, it is not up to us to police others' feelings. Those boards are gonna go wild! As others have said, your nuts and bolts won't stay tight without help. If you have enough extra thread on the bolts to hold both safely just double up your nuts with a nylon lock nut. If you want to keep your boards from buckling, run a circular saw between the boards and be sure not to cut into your aluminum rails. The kerf of the blade will give the boards more space to expand. The way your frame is built you wont be able to do anything about the ends twisting and curling though. Looked like you needed some sealant on the ends of the boards too. Make sure it soaks in real good on the end grain and you'll be good to go. p.s.- If you were my daughter I'd be one proud dad!

Same other technique applies when drilling into a roof so the hot shavings doesn’t melt the headliner fabric. Just say precautionary measure.

Next week will be designer Hannah with a keen fashion sense; still sounding cool. There's trekking Hannah, all bleary eye with hair everywhere but still cool while she laughs at herself. Bush craft Hannah, handmade Hannah, Home cooking Hannah... still cool and smarmy.

Dang! you could use that tripod as a center pole for a tent! One of my Van Life friends has a deck on their van, that also holds a drum of water in a gravity fed system.

I am a 60 yr old woman that ran across one of your youtube videos and now I am mesmerized!! You are courageous, brave, independent, and a free spirit, all the things I wanted to be when I grew up...whenever that is. I think "my ship has sailed" on taking off on an adventure like you have, as I am currently raising my 9 yr old granddaughter and nearly "handicapped" by several worsening, degenerative illnesses and injuries, so I will continue to watch, and live vicariously, through your videos!! Safe travels.

I would be proud of this if I did it , too . Thanks for the tips , and the informative, fun video . I thought it looked good even before you put the carriage bolts on . When you put the bolts on , the deck looked even better , and more secure . Shows you what I know , because i may have left the project unfinished and not put on the bolts . See, i'm learning stuff .

Looks great! But please consider adding "lock washers" or use nuts with nylon locking in them. The wood will expand/shrink, the aluminum can compress, over time the nuts will come loose and start to fall off unless you retorque them as needed.

Can't wait to do this to my van, I bought a van with a ladder rack on top to put the deck on...my goal was before the end of October to put the roof deck up but this video got me to frisky. Might be doing it on my next off days also because of how good its feeling outside right now. Looks so good!

You need to use Marine urethane varnish on the ends of your boards and on top. That is a waterproofing to keep your boards from rotting out too soon.

Anyone that build decks for a living would tell you that the end of your boards should be a sad face not a smiley one cause when they get older they will split and cause splinter when the are a smiley face on the ends. Also people are right about the lock nuts or loosen them and put some red lock tight on the ones you are using....... Good job with all that you have been doing even at the cabin.

Perhaps measure the thickness of the wood plank to be drilled, and put tape on your drill bitt the exact length of the bolt. Still a good idea to put a piece of wood to protect the van though 👍🏻. Awesome job girl! I wish we could put a rooftop deck on our van, but ours will be covered with solar panels, an ac unit, and a vent/fan. I also just ordered a telescoping ladder to have easier access to the roof.

As a former carpenter, I'm always intrigued to see how other people build stuff. Looks pretty solid imo. ✌ Keep an eye on those bolts and clamps tho ... and idk if you used lock-nuts, but if not i recommend that and/or lock-washers. P.s.. just an idea, but a future project could be a 3 sided railing (2 to 3 ft tall,) and use tarp or something to block wind if you bbq up there, or just for privacy.

What’s the temperature effect inside this van from the shade? Does it feel cooler? Throw some reflectix on the outside of those windows with some alien tape mounting tape and you may be right there with indoor/outdoor temp parity.

  • @emilycavell-griffiths4866

Hannah, put rubber grommet washers at the top of each bolt...it will prevent water ingress down into the boards.

  • @mpselectrolab1067

Make sure to orient the grain so the board does not cup up to hold water over time, then one bolt per board in middle is good.

I hope 2 things are right for you. Aluminum is so questionable for strength. If you are not going to have any heavy loads carried up there r you are not going to have company (since you are what, maybe 90 lbs weight. And second, I hope those were lock nuts. Sometimes called self locking nut or nylock nuts. I didn't see any lock washer going on. Locknuts would be best. If there were no lock washers or lck nuts the nuts will eventually fall of and it will all come apart from vibration.
