- Solo Winter Storm Camping w/ Rooftop Tent And Diesel Heater, Winter Camping. Took my 4Runner into the woods during a snowstorm to camp in my rooftop tent. Brought a long a diesel heater to keep myself warm when temperatures dropped down to -20 degrees that night. It was freezing outside but I stayed pretty warm inside my tent.

Great video as usual. As for the fire- I love my propane firepit and won't use regular wood fire anymore. Just better all around, no stank, less risk, very little work involved. I'm also craving some darn chili now.
Yeah I love my gas fire pit too much to want to really have a fire pit too much. If I’m with a big group of people we usually will have one but I think a lot of it is just for show at this point.
I’ve been using the Chinese diesel heaters for a few years now. In my experience, it’s best to fire it up and let it run. It’s better for them and uses less power and fuel. It’s not like a Buddy or Cupid heater where you use them to knock the chill off before bed and after waking up.
Yeah I usually try to run it at least 30-40 minutes before I go to bed. Last year when I was using this I would run it too high and I’d be out of fuel by the morning. I’ve learned my lesson now.
I have the same tent and i would highly recommend getting the insulation layer they have for it. You'll use less fuel with your heater need less extreme cold weather bedding as well.
Thank god I found someone that has the insulation. I had no clue if it was worth it’s can you close it with the insulation in there?
@@OXFOOT yes you can absolutely close the tent with the insulation layer. It makes such a huge difference temperaturewise

ive had lots of these diesel heaters, cheap and brand name and theyre a bit of a toss up. The brand name ones ive had way better luck with, but sometimes the amazon heaters will act up and not want to fire some one weird reason or another. The amazon ones will flood sometimes and will kick on the third or 4th try. If you dont have good enough battery charge it will not be happy either. i still use the amazon ones but they are tricky sometimes
Great video. Is there reason to worry about mold on or in your RTT during winter when it’s harder to air it out?

I’d let that diesel heater run into the boots for a few seconds to take the edge off before you put them on.

Glad your diesel heater is working fine. I've also seen a lot of videos recently where the heaters quit working in the middle of the night. I have one on the bus and am on my 2nd winter with it and it's been trouble free. I opted for the dial instead of the digital controller but like you, I usually run mine about 30-50% power and let it cycle through warm ups and cool downs. How loud is your pump? Mines under the bus, in a plastic box stuffed with rockwool and mounted on a rubber mount and its still loud lol.
Mine isn’t too crazy loud, I feel like I hear more of the air rushing out of the hose more than the pump it self. When the pump kicks on the tapping is pretty loud though lol.
I’ve used mine a ton of times and never had an issue but it was especially cold that night so I decided to turn it on just in case. But yeah 30-50% is what I typically do. I’ll see what percent I’ll use on my new 2kw one that I just got. Might be a bit higher to keep it the same warmth.

I’ve got something much better this winter season lol. I’m one of those guys that’ll use something till way after I’ve outgrown the need for something else. Picked up a jetboil base camp this year.

I have a rode video micro. It’s really good for the money but if you are filming near traffic or anything it picks up a lot of background noise. Great for nature though as it picks up ambient stuff. It’s technically a directional mic but it still picks up some noise from the sides as well.
Dont prefer the fires over propane cooking videos, whatever is easiest for you. Each video is entertaining and will have me coming back
Yeah the fires are nice in big groups for drinking beside but when I’m by myself I’d prefer to just do my gas fire pit. Need to get a nicer stove though.

Inside the vehicle while I’m climbing and going down in elevation starts to smell like diesel because of the weep hole in the top of the fuel cap. This stops it. When I get to camp I remove it and then put it back on before I leave camp.

I have a full video on it if you want info on most of it but I’ve really liked it. Can last two nights if you use it at like half power or less. Price is always fluctuating because it is a bit of a diy thing but I’d say at the time I did it, cost me about $200 or less.

Do you have any problem with the diesel spilling from the cap?
It weeps from the top because of the change in elevation. I put the tap on there to stop that from happening. Just make sure to remove that tape before you use it though.
Where did you get the hose for the diesel heater? I got one for my diesel heater but has a funky smell coming from it.
Did you get an insulated one or the one that comes with the heater?

I’ve liked it a lot. It takes a bit more time to open up than the skycamp but it’s not a big deal to me. It’s bigger inside and I like the crossbars. If you don’t need cross bars or the extra space then I’d say the skycamp is the way to go but having previously had the skycamp, I like this better.

True! I have MaxTrax and a solar panel up top on the rack now. Might be easier to with the crossbars on the X-Cover.
@@longshor13 since you already have the solar panel it doesn’t matter much but the ikamper skycamp has a panel made specifically made for it. But yeah it’s possible you could use the solar and max trax up there. I’ve never tried the solar up there though.

It’s silver. I think the cement gray is the better color of the gray/silver.
to me the heater would be more efficient if the tube transporting the heat, was shorter. Thanks for sharing this vid.
Exactly why I got the heater I’m using in the next trip. I made it longer because the angle it’s at would likely cause issues with the engine. If there’s too much resistance it’ll shut off the engine. The new one is angled to go in the front entrance.
@@OXFOOT I wasn't thinking of eventual resistance in the tube, but about the heat it loses in that "long" run, being exposed to the severe cold with so much surface. An isolated tube would be the next thing :) In other situations a long tube would be ideal to cool heat off.
@@fourbyforester yeah it’s not the most efficient way to do it by a long shot. Was trying to come up with a better way to do it, might eventually come up with something to make it more efficient but until then I just went a completely different route with the design. Once I see how the new one works I’ll improve on this one.
@@fourbyforester I could probably aim it at the entrance and not get that back pressure. Ideally I want a way to have the heater bring in the heater air as well. This heater doesn’t provide a great way to do that.
@@OXFOOT there is an Australian guy explaining extensively everything about diesel heaters. These things were originally designed to go into the vehicle. Placing it outside in the harsh weather will influence the performance. Some sort of insulation on the outside of the heater might improve it, making it larger though. The man also explained the so called air intake filter is not a filter. Some sort of filtering is advised though since the tiniest bug can clog the injector. The resistance you mention might be caused by the exhaust. That should be wide enough especially if you make it longer. An annex would improve the heating too: taking in warmer air. On itself your heater is a great one. Just check out the Australian guy's videos to see how you can make it perfect by tuning it to the max.
do u get out out the tent to set up the camara and record and then u get back inside the tent and come out? or how do u do it, to get that shot just asking i am curious also its snowing so how does the camara not get covered with snow overnight?
Half my night is setting up the camera and walking away and coming back. Yeah I get up in the morning and get back in.
Whats the use of parking on rocks, keeping the cold from the vehicle?
It doesn’t show up on camera but it wasn’t level, parked on the rocks on one side to bring it to the height of the other side. I like to get level to try to get the best sleep.
What kind of lights are those poles? Look amazing! Not a fan of red light as I don't see that much in it but white lights are too intens. Orange/amber is right in the middle and perfect for me
It’s a Devos light ranger. It’s dimmable and the orange thing slides over it and clicks in. There’s the ones I have and then a line that’s a bit cheaper. I just got motion sensors on mine now and they just became the perfect lights. I have a video on them if you’re interested in checking them out further?

@@OXFOOT Camp chef is a solid choice. I hear good things about Jet Boil as well. I don't own either though. I have a couple of old Coleman white gas stoves but I am currently running a Partner Steel 22" two burner stove. The Partner stove is way over priced IMHO but it is bomb proof and is a buy once cry once purchase. If I were to replace it I'd prob go with a Camp Chef Everest or Mountaineer but the Mountaineer is almost as much as my Partner stove so...I will say this about the Camo Chef Mountaineer there is an optional leg set for it so it can stand on it's own without a table needed but this adds to the already high purchase price.

Probably a lot of overlapping info. Most of the stuff I talk about in this video is stuff that I constantly get questions about. Might seem repetitive to people who stick around but I get asked about the diesel heater daily, the ikamper weekly and a ton of other stuff. Sorry if you found it too repetitive.

These are a 34” Nitto ridge grappler tire at 305/70r/17, the factory tire is I believe 265/17r17 BFG all terrains which I think is like 30”
They handle the snow great for not being a snow peak rated tire.
@@OXFOOT My Off-Road came with Grappler 265/70R17s. Not sure how well they'd do in snow though. Good aggressive treads.

I got about 12 hours on this tank to half way. Maybe a little under 24 maybe 20 to be safe. Power is hard to say it took maybe 20% of my 3600 watt power bank. It’s very efficient.
1-2 amps after the initial start up which takes about 10 or so amps for about 5 minutes or less
