  • Watch Ukrainian mine-hunting ships, Cherkasy and Chernihiv, arrive at Portsmouth Naval Base in the UK where they will be temporarily based until they're able to enter the Black Sea.
    The two Sandown-class mine-countermeasure vessels were formally known as HMS Shoreham (Cherkasy) and Grimsby (Chernihiv) with the Royal Navy, before being donated to Ukraine in 2023.
    They were not able to enter Ukraine via the Black Sea due to the conditions of the 'Montreux Convention', which prevents warships and other military watercraft from passing through the Bosporus Strait in Turkey when at war.
    Cherkasy (M311) and Chernihiv (M311), of the Ukrainian Navy, returned to the UK where they will temporarily be based at His Majesty's Naval Base (HMNB) Portsmouth. From there they will participate in exercises with the Royal Navy and US Navy around the United Kingdom.

      Was wondering about that. Would it even be allowed to navigate through the Bosporus Strait?

    Didn't ukraine also start construction of a brand new corvette, in another country?
    -Edit, I think it's Hetman Ivan Mazepa, and I think it's closer to being finished.

    Is this a safe guard measure for the ship or to get upgrades? As Ukraine forces have systematically taken out Russian ships there could be retaliatory response by the Russky's on Ukraines Navy.

      I was wondering if transportation by land was possible. They're not massive. There must be a lot of risks involved.

    The Montreux Convention regulates maritime traffic through the Turkish Straits.
    In wartime, if Turkey is not involved in the conflict, warships of the nations at war may not pass through the Straits, except when returning to their base.
    How did Ukraine warships bypass this treaty, or does it now only apply to Russia?

    • @animator331
      @animator331 Před měsícem +3

      It's a British ship that was gifted to Ukraine and had to return when it couldn't cross through the strait.

    • @Steven-D-Allan
      @Steven-D-Allan Před měsícem +1

      @animator331 Thank you. You would think those planning this gift would have known about the Montreux Convention. Probably thought they could ignore it as they did the Minsk Protocol, which sought to end the Donbas war fought between armed Russian separatist groups and Armed Forces of Ukraine, with Russian regular forces playing a central part, in 2014. Germany (Merkel) and France (Hollande) have both recently stated publicly that they never intended to honour this agreement which is why, after eight years of fighting in the Donbas, Russia stepped in to help.
