  • Billionaire Charlie Munger offered at least 200 million dollars to UC Santa Barbara to build his vision of what a dorm should be. Nicknamed "prison" dorm and dormzilla, it would cost 1.5 billion to build. Maximized to the brim, his 11 story dorm fits over 4600 students, but at the expense of windowless bedrooms. When an architect on the university's design committee resigned in protect, Munger's "prison" dorm went viral and got hated on by the whole internet. But maybe Charlie was onto something and not just some sick twisted billionaire trapping students in dark rooms for fun. He seems like a pretty honest guy to me from his interview he did on why he wants to build the dorm.

You'd think the Costco would go on the FIRST floor. You know...for logistical reasons. 😄

This is a tough one for me but I think I would trade in sharing a room with a window for having my room without a window. Although one of my fondest memories of my dorm experience at UCSD was lowering myself down from my second story window to run away from campus security who were busting our party lolll

First time I went to college the dorm was a converted building and a lot of the rooms had no windows. Some people had very narrow jail style windows that couldn't be opened.

NGL looks like a giant fire hazard single corridor yeah watch 500+ people all have to file down a single hallway in a fire not like they'll be trapped or trample people.

This is actually very interesting. However Michigan really needed the artificial sunlight since they will not get it naturally for 6 months a year.

Would have loved to live in a place like this. I had boarded up my window anyways due to my messed up sleep schedule.

One thing I will say is that they are kind of optimistic by placing a "gastro pub" on the plans given the laws in California and the age of most of the students who go to UCSB... (or at least one set of plans I saw showed such a thing)

UCSB students don't have to worry about Munger Hall - the $200 million was cancelled. Now the students can go protest the lack of housing. LOL
