  • Van der Graaf Generator are an English progressive rock band, formed in 1967 in Manchester by singer-songwriters Peter Hammill and Chris Judge Smith and the first act signed by Charisma Records. They did not experience much commercial success in the UK, but became popular in Italy during the 1970s. In 2005 the band reformed, and are still musically active with a line-up of Hammill, organist Hugh Banton and drummer Guy Evans.
    The band formed at the University of Manchester, but settled in London where they signed with Charisma. They went through several incarnations in their early years, including a brief split in 1969. When they reformed, they found minor commercial success with The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other (released in early 1970 and their only album to chart in the UK), and after the follow-up album, H to He, Who Am the Only One (December 1970), stabilised around a line-up of Hammill, Banton, Evans and saxophonist David Jackson. The quartet subsequently achieved significant success in Italy with the release of Pawn Hearts in 1971. After several exhausting tours of Italy, the band split in 1972. They reformed in 1975, releasing Godbluff and frequently touring Italy again, before a major line-up change and a slight rename to Van der Graaf. The band split in 1978. After many years apart, the band finally reunited at a gig at the Royal Festival Hall and a short tour in 2005. Since then, the band has continued as a trio of Hammill, Banton, and Evans, who record and tour regularly in between Hammill's concurrent solo career.

    Simply magnificent! Here are the lyrics for you all to enjoy:
    I am the suck of air you take
    That you've had many times before;
    I am the blow you try to fake,
    But which still throws you out the door;
    I am the air that fills your lungs,
    But leaves you emptier below;
    I am the void that you can't explain,
    But which is where you want to go.
    Flame sucks between the balls of steel;
    Nothing moves, the air itself congeals.
    Look at the flame if you want to,
    Hear the sharp crack of the fission,
    Smell the brief vapor of ozone,
    Feel static motion.
    I am the love you try to hide,
    But which all can understand;
    I am the hate you still deny,
    Though the blood is on your hands;
    I am the peace you're searching for,
    But you know you'll never find;
    I am the pain you can't endure,
    But which tingles in your mind.
    Flame sucks between the balls of steel;
    Nothing moves, the air itself congeals.
    Look at the flame if you want to,
    Hear the sharp crack of the fission,
    Smell the brief vapor of ozone,

I'd only just turned seventeen years old, what an impact they had on me. There were about 150 in the audience I reckon . Do recall preferring the two long tunes played during their hour long set. Tanti saluti da un appassionato di QUELLA musica 60/70 che qualche anno dopo Venne denominata PROGRESSIVE ROCK!!!!!!!

    Even though I’ve been into rock in all its various genres I’ve not been too knowledgeable about these guys, but thoroughly enjoying listening to this. Anyone got any suggestions on where to start with their best stuff?

      I think Pawn Hearts is a good place to start. It seems to be a little more accessible than most. But maybe that’s because it is where I started back in 73 or 74?

    Soy la chupada de aire que tomas
    I am the suck of air you take
    Que has tenido muchas veces antes;
    That you've had many times before;
    Soy el golpe que intentas fingir,
    I am the blow you try to fake,
    Pero que todavía te tira por la puerta;
    But which still throws you out the door;
    Soy el aire que llena tus pulmones,
    I am the air that fills your lungs,
    pero te deja más vacío abajo;
    But leaves you emptier below;
    Soy el vacío que no puedes explicar,
    I am the void that you can't explain,
    Pero que es donde quieres ir.
    But which is where you want to go.
    La llama chupa entre las bolas de acero;
    Flame sucks between the balls of steel;
    Nada se mueve, el mismo aire se congela.
    Nothing moves, the air itself congeals.
    Mira la llama si quieres,
    Look at the flame if you want to,
    Escucha el agudo crujido de la fisión,
    Hear the sharp crack of the fission,
    Huele el breve vapor de ozono,
    Smell the brief vapor of ozone,
    Siente el movimiento estático.
    Feel static motion.
    Soy el amor que tratas de ocultar,
    I am the love you try to hide,
    Pero que todos puedan entender;
    But which all can understand;
    Soy el odio que aún niegas,
    I am the hate you still deny,
    Aunque la sangre esté en tus manos;
    Though the blood is on your hands;
    Soy la paz que buscas,
    I am the peace you're searching for,
    Pero sabes que nunca encontrarás;
    But you know you'll never find;
    Soy el dolor que no puedes soportar,
    I am the pain you can't endure,
    Pero que hormiguea en tu mente.
    But which tingles in your mind.
    La llama chupa entre las bolas de acero;
    Flame sucks between the balls of steel;
    Nada se mueve, el mismo aire se congela.
    Nothing moves, the air itself congeals.
    Mira la llama si quieres,
    Look at the flame if you want to,
    Escucha el agudo crujido de la fisión,
    Hear the sharp crack of the fission,
    Huele el breve vapor de ozono,
    Smell the brief vapor of ozone,
    Siente el movimiento estático.
    Feel static motion.
    Soy la alegría por la que realmente pagas,
    I am the joy you really pay for,
    Pero que viene completamente gratis;
    But which comes completely free;
    Yo soy tu dios en el último día,
    I am your god on the final day,
    Porque la verdad somos tú y yo
    For the truth is you and me.

      Bowie was a huge fan of Peter Hammill and Van der Graaf Generator; he actually called himself "Poor man's Peter Hammill" in an interview once. He also was at the reunion concert of VdGG at the Royal Festival Hall on May 6th 2005.

    Oddio i BEATLES sottovalutati mi sembra onestamente un po' esagerato,dato che forse sono la band più conosciuta al MONDO !!!!!!! Per il resto posso essere in linea di massima d'accordo anche se i LED ZEPPELIN non sono proprio degli sconosciuti, i GENESIS, certo i GENESIS di Peter Gabriel sono più di NICCHIA e quindi più underrated meglio gli altri GENESIS dei successi tipo invisible Touch ERANO molto più popolari !!!!!! Per quanto riguarda VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR YES e RUSH e non solo , sono pienamente d'accordo con chi pensa QUESTO!!!!!! Anzi TROVO VERAMENTE SCANDALOSO che i MITICI VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR non siano neancora inseriti nella ROCK nROLL HALL OF FAME!!!!! Lo trovo ASSOLUTAMENTE SCANDALOSO!!!!!! E poi per finire che PETER HAMMILL urla !!!!! Perché IAN GILLAN e BRUCE DICKINSON cosa fanno!!!???? Bisbigliano alle Orecchie???? Anzi BRUCE DICKINSON è quello che più si avvicina a PETER HAMMILL come STILE di canto!!!!!! E Hammill perché urla ???!!!! Primo perché nel suo STILE di canto c'è tutta la gamma delle emozioni umane, rabbia dolore gioia etc !!!!!! E secondo quando urla grida denuncia le cose che NON vanno è un artista musicista che è sempre stato contro il Sistema il music BIZ ilpop mainstream e quindi le urla quando ci stanno bene e Lui lo sa dove metterle nei suoi testi servono per svegliare le coscienze e per sensibilizzarle su argomenti e problemi sia esistenziali che di attualità ed altri di vari tipi!!!!! Ed Hammill è uno dei più BRAVI e GENIALI a saperlo FARE!!!!!! Poi guardando il filmato di questa straordinaria esibizione della band dove vi era ancora NIC POTTER al basso rip ho notato che HAMMILL indossa una maglietta Molto carina , vi è raffigurato TOPOLINO apprendista Stregone dal film FANTASIA!!!!! Bèh il progressive rock prende MOLTO dalla FANTASIA dall'immaginazione unita spesso da grande padronanza tecnica strumentale e la musica dei VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR è SPECIALE unica MAGICA direi!!!!!! Tornando a quello che ho detto prima sui GENESIS quel MEGLIO non voglio ESSERE frainteso significa che MEGLIO CONOSCIUTI rispetto a quelli con PETER GABRIEL che a me personalmente piacciono molto di più di quelli DOPO!!!!!!!
