At a watering hole on the African savanna, a herd of buffalo congregates. Around them, a pride of hungry lions. The big cats wait patiently for the herd to drink its fill, before unleashing their shock-and-awe tactics in hopes of catching a weak victim.
But what happens when two bold lions face a strong male buffalo? They may have claws, but that’s no match for helmet-like horns and skin up to 5 cm thick. Who will win in this incredible battle of wills?
    Original Production:
“The Lions Rule” - A Terra Mater Factual Studios production, in co-production with National Geographic Channel and Doclights/NDR Naturfilm, in association with ARTE France/Unité Découverte et Connaissance and Shibumi Films, produced and directed by Owen Prümm, written by Ruth Berry.

How about the shots? You know people spend weeks or even months observing these animals with a camera to record the exact minute something interesting happens. The narrator and the script writer probably spend 2-3 hours working on this. And you come here to say that the good thing of this video is the narration? What's wrong with you?!

And while one lion can run off to refill on water, the buffalo can't do that. The buffalo just have to try to save as much energy as possible without becoming a meal. It's a selfish game.

I found the commentary hilarious. Referring to buffalo as 'vegans by nature' instead of just herbivories; vegans are people who choose a particular diet over other available diets whereas buffaloes have not exercised any choice, they are not meat eaters - they don't have any option. Similarly, the reference to lions as 'couple of cats who think of buffalo as just a piece of meat' - lions are carnivores, they are wired to think of buffaloes as food, would be quite a task to condition lions to think of buffaloes as their equals and thereby leave them alone. Is it a coincidence that this channel features videos where the prey triumphs over the predator or have I missed videos with different endings. Just random thoughts. Excellent photography - great work.

Funny. More than half of a lion diets are cape buffalos . A single male lion hunts adult buffalos always, don't take excuses just because of this one video, is even young lions that have been kicked out of the pride, not More than 2 years. So what are you saying?

That's 100% false, cape buffaloes are not the main prey of lion, by far.
Most prides don't even dare to attack them, only a few pride of lions are what we call "buffaloes specialist", which kind of make most studies have biasied result as it really depend on the region and pride.
And even those prides struggle a lot, some large pack where completely destroyed in a few bad hunt.
lion mostly hunt zebra and wildebeest as well as antelope, gazelle and warthog
Buffaloes are not an uncommon prey of course, but it's one of the more dangerous prey of lions.
And one of the main cause of death in lion.
More than hyenas, disease, other lion or elephant even.
species such as zebra, impala, wildebeest, gemsbocks and some antelope, are favored over buffaloes by most packs.
And no, this video doesn't fool anyone, because unlike what most documentaries shows you, most lion hunt are failure.
With a 25% succes rate only on average.
And can be as low as 12% success for somes specie and environnment.
with hunting in the open being nearly 3,5 time less effective than hunting in bushland and shrubs, and hunting in the night and twilight being nearly twice as more efficient than during the day.
Even a warthog have more chance to escape than being killed in a hunt (47% success).
zebra and wildebeest hunt are around 38% succes at most.
Adult cape buffaloes are fucking though, it's 500-800kg of muscle and large horn that can gore a lion in a single hit as well as hoove able to fracture the ribs of any predators.
Lion and hyenas generaly goes for youngs, under 1 years when they hunt buffaloes.
If we exclude humans, buffaloes are possibly THE major cause of death for lions, (other lions in intraspecific fight may be more common, but it mostly tagret male, not females).
They're no joking, not for nothing they're called widowmaker and black death.
They even have an entire anti-predation behaviour just to fuck up a lion and send him in a one way direct express flight to heaven.

@@deinsilverdrac8695 you're ingnorant, you didn't even show any prove. There's only one video on record of a cape buffalo who kills a lion and the lion is very old, apart from it no other records or account of a buffalo killed a lion.
You are even saying a different thing, while am telling you that male lion hunts alone and kills bigger prey like adult giraffes, buffalo, wildebeest, zebras, wart hog, kudu, hippo, young elephants. Am coming with the link cause i don't say what i haven't seen.
Lion success hunting rate is 30% when in pride or 17 to 19 % when hunting single. Where do you got your opinions from?
You said lions die from hunting cape buffalos ? But you haven't even see a video of lion getting killed by a buffalo, you still don't know that a single lion attacks buffalos herd of 2000 to 4000 and come out with a kill,as you will see the buffalos running for their lives.
And here you said lion success hunting rate can be as low as 12% , are you guessing this or what?
A single lion kills 5000pounds African bush elephant (am coming with the link) and a single lion again an adult giraffe of 4500pounds , two male lion do kill adult hippos.
