- I have completed the two facades on the old Town Hall. One is now a cheap-and-cheerful bed shop, whilst the other is a cheesy nightclub called Club Passion. In this video I show how I used card and simple materials to complete the facades, including adding advertising in the windows, a lovely shop entrance, and the elegant quoins on the side of the building.

Your scratchbuilding never ceases to amaze me. Top class.
Thank you so much!!
hahaha - the advert! And that nightclub is definitely spot on.
Glad you like it!
Ben’s Beds! Genius!
Thank you! 👍
Magnificent again. Congratulations.
And the perspective on the road is very effective.
Thank you. I am pleased with how this whole part of the layout is coming together.
As you say, it's the little touches that make it stand out. Arthur
Thank you!
Almost caught up now. Another great addition to our favourite West Yorkshire town.
I really enjoy your flurry of comments when you take a month or two off and then have a big catch-up session. I imagine it’s a good fun way to watch.
You always make it look so easy.
It is very fiddly!
It is another fabulous building Michael. I can understand that you are pleased with it. Looking at it at the end it really is hard to believe it is all card. Stephen
Thank you Stephen! It's amazing how realistic simple card can be isn't it?
Was just rewatching Happy Valley and I was suprised to see the inspiration for chandwell town hall in the background of a shot
Yes of course! I've never seen an episode, but it must appear from time to time as it is hard to miss!
Another great commercial! What an excellent job you've made on the building, it was fascinating to see it rise from plans to final product. Thanks for sharing.
Regards
Steve
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing realism!
Thank you!
Beautiful Michael.
Thank you!
I am trying very hard to find a substance to shrink my 6ft plus frame down to scale size of 1:148. I have this real desire to visit Chandwell. It looks wonderful on video but it must be magical to be there and enjoy the efforts of its creator, the Cardboard Master.
Cheers, Bob
Thank you!
Michael, I am VERY grateful for the information and tips you have shared because I have been attempting most of these effects for ten years. Thank you for sharing this goldmine of tips! I don't have the time to experiment or search out information constantly, so THANK YOU!!!! Your work is exceptional and exactly the effects I am trying to achieve. Kits are not even an option because of the scale with which I work (S), and the design styles generally available (American or Continental). Cheers!!! I hope to meet you one day to thank you in person!
Thank you so very much! Those are really kind comments!
Splendid !now we can go to a nightclub in Chandwell and we can also get beds to sleep in afterwards.
Beautiful building. It is always interesting to watch your magic hands and printer do their thing and create these amazing buildings.
So nice of you, thank you!
Gosh im slow to this party but wow,a man of many talents, ive got alot to catch up on as i look over your videos, your quality model making, wit and humour come through brilliantly, incredible
Thank you very much Sam! And as my most local viewer, why not pop over and take a look in the flesh one day!?
Just superb Michael think this maybe the best yet and that is saying something 😮
Wow! Thank you!
Great stuff Michael! 👍
Thank you! 👍
Like Robin, I too have run out of superlatives! At the risk of repeating myself, this is just astonishing. Thanks so much for sharing your skill. Roy.
Thank you! Cheers!
It all looks fantastic, Michael. You must be an exceptionally observant person to take in all the details and distill them into Chandwell. The doorway to Ben's Beds is a tour de force - so many grotty shops in old premises, selling beds, or sofas, carpets or whatever, had those kind of entries. But I never really took in the way they looked until seeing your N-guage version. Thanks. Tom
Many thanks!
At 11:41 a.m. the Club Passion cleaners have knocked off for a cuppa, exhausted after yet another cleaning attempt on the sticky fake Axminster carpets in the bar area.
Meanwhile, Ben, of Ben's Beds is planning yet another advertising campaign to try and shift a few more of those dodgy matresses.
I wonder what next for Chandwell? Maybe a skate park, or a derelict building that the council have plans for?
Superb, Michael, a world in miniature.
Thank you! I think the building next door to the Town Hall will be in some kind of state of disrepair.
Michael Liking how both the front side of High St is coming on. soon you’ll have a complete view along High St under the Viaduct to the back wall. You’ll also have the two different full towers either side of the Viaduct. Linking Chandwell Grand Victorian Vision to the Post War Hope of a Bright Future for All together. The Old Town Hall is coming along well, I wonder what the final building on High St will be. Perhaps the small road alongside the Viaduct and crossing the beck is Viaduct Lane. Ian
Yes - great name suggestion for that little road.
Looks awesome!
Thank you!
All the little details make the build. Even the stuff most people wont notice right away. Cheers
Thank you!
Excellent work and attention to detail. It's often said "the devil is in the detail" and taking the detail elements to this level (especially on a card scratch build) is what makes your work stand out 👏👍
Thank you!
Another superb job Michael.
Looking forward to next project. Thanks very much.
Thank you!
Chandwell, where folk can sleep at night with a clear conscience in the knowledge of belonging to Chandwell. Unlike them posh buggers from Leeds who must lie awake tossing and turning all night.
It must be awful for them.
This is really getting nicer every passing day. The effect of the brick and stone texture and the slight relief of the quoins gives it even more realism, and you can't nearly tell it's only printed paper. Also, love the Commercial you've made as introduction. the way you added the classic "le roi du matelas" line (cheaper would be illegal) is spot on !
The "le roi du matelas" line was a great suggestion, thank you!
Michael!!! I can’t believe how well this turned out! Congratulations! It’s such a joy to watch this part of town come to life
I am really pleased with how this one is looking.
I'm in awe at your fantastic modelling skills, Michael.
As always, superb work.
Thank you so much!
Cutting that beveled edge: Find a cheap matte cutter for picture frames. You should get a sweet 45 degree every time. I've had one on my list for a couple years. I THINK some have adjustable angels as well. Even better.
That’s good advice and I did consider it. However, the cheapest one I found was about £30. I’ve only needed to do an angled cut twice in three years and I couldn’t justify a cost-per-cut of £15! My scalpel technique is far from perfect but the result was acceptable. I’d be keen to hear your thoughts/advice on the dome in last Friday’s episode. I’m happy with the result but I bet you have a more effective technique of getting to it… 👍
I do not know if you had this in the UK, but: In Germany there is the bed/mattress store ("Matratzen Concord"), some kind of a running joke: It is everywhere, but you never see any customer in there. So many stories, what they really do.
Good to see "Ben's Beds" is a honourable store, no mafia, special smokable plants or secret world domination organisation involved.
I really like your advice how to cut those ancles to fit perfectly. My fingers are still well, too.
Have a relaxed holiday time, Michael.
All the best
Valentin
Thank you so much. Valentin! Matrazen Concord sounds very much like it should open a store in Chandwell! :) Have a lovely holiday time too!
@@Chandwell This might be right. But "Ben's Bed" will always be Chandwells #1 ;-)
I have always thought that card model's just don't look realistic.. But, you have certainly impressed me with your modelling skills, and made me think and really look at your model. It looks great. (Now to go and watch some of your older video's as this is the first one I've seen.) Craig.
Thank you so much Craig. I always try to make my card models as realistic as possible. Try this video to get a good look at the layout… czcams.com/video/yHZGRLoqGAc/video.html 😀
Hi Michael - Your buildings get better and better, fascinating to watch.
Thank you! 👍
Michael Just had a thought listening to Bens Bed advert how about Stan & Ollie. Two Ronnies or Chuckle Brothers style or even The Plank trying to carry a double mattress on the pavement outside the shop on High St with a bit of To me too You. Ian
:)
Your Beds advert is worthy of the sort of ads you get on TV in central Florida, USA. ... "IF YOU WENT ELSEWHERE ... YOU PAID TOO MUCH !! 🤔
EXACTLY that! There's one near us that has a huge sign outside saying "PASSING THIS STORE WILL SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR WEALTH" :)
Another cracking video
Thanks again!
I have run out of superlatives
I totally agree. 😊
Me too
Ditto, so will send Weetabix boxes instead 😉
@@Pooky-Cat Thats the way to do it
Thank you everyone! :)
Some of the most beautiful and attractively detailed work yet...and on the very front of the layout where it can be admired the best.
Once again, your well thought through, brillantly positioned and perfectly executed work has left those of us making feeble efforts to emulate this level of genius floundering in your wake and ever inspired to continue the craft in a hope of achieving something close...
Steady on! :) Thank you though, as always! :)
Amazing work as always. Fascinating what you do with so little.
Thank you!
That's looking phenomenally good Michael. All those little details really pay off. The town hall is gonna be a real stand out feature in Chandwell.
I hope so! I wanted something special right at the front.
As always yet another excellent build
Thank you!
Please ignore my comment on your last video… I see why you don’t use a Cricut… love the channel. Cheers 👍
Thank you so much!
I don't suppose this layout will ever get out onto the exhibition circuit?
Sadly no - it is firmly fixed into the fabric of the house.
Beautiful work. Dumb question - why do so many modelers from the UK conflate scale and guage?
Thank you. I don’t know the answer to your question though!
Nice video as always, but the voice-over artist isn't a patch on the previous lady 👍
Don't worry... Britney will be back!
@@Chandwell Good to know 😉
Does Ben sell second hand, part worn, slightly stained mattresses?..
Asking for a friend...
He may keep a few in the yard round the back.
Hello! I've been doing a lot of card building lately and I've found a slight problem with my card fraying and expanding when it gets damp was painting, even doing very thin coats with an airbrush. Do you have any tips for avoiding this? Painting the edges with a matte varnish or something first to seal it all?
Hello! I have never had that problem. I sometimes get card fraying if my blade is not sharp enough, but I've not encountered card expanding before, even when I brush on paint or varnish. I have heard that some people seal the edges of their components with a layer of PVA glue to stop fraying -- maybe try that?
I was already hugely impressed by Chandwell- but it just gets better and better. You've absolutely nailed the character of a Yorkshire town that has seen better days.
I love the nightclub especially, no doubt replete with sticky carpets and overflowing urinals. Not to mention drunken punchups and overzealous bouncers!
You've got the atmosphere of the nightclub spot on!
Can he replicate the smell?
Hi Michael, fab video as usual. I see you used Matt varnish - would you suggest I do this to protect card buildings and structures where they are likely to be next areas that will be ballasted (with 50/50 water and PVA). Keep up the great work. Jeff
Yes, absolutely! I added four coats of varnish in the areas where I may accidentally spray water, and six coats along the bottoms of walls that have the ballast sitting against them. I didn't get any problems when ballasting.
Thanks for the guidance, Jeff
The old town hall clock should be not working. Have to make sure it show different time from other clocks in the model
Haha, yes. However, considering everything else about Chandwell is dreary and old and dirty and broken, I took the decision to have every single clock telling exactly the same time - "Chandwell Time" is 11:41 (AM). It is a matter of great civic pride in Chandwell. :)
why not make it period to victorian times rather than a victorian pound shop? that would never happen
I’m not sure what you mean by “Victorian pound shop” because I’ve made it a 1990s bed shop, architect’s office and night club. I’ve not made it it’s original Victorian Town Hall because it is 1993 in Chandwell and the council moved to more modern accommodation sometime in the late 1970s, leaving the building unoccupied until Club Passion, Ben’s Beds, and the architect moved in. If you take a walk around Bradford, Halifax, Shipley, or anywhere else, you will see that at this does happen, all the time. The original town hall in Sowerby Bridge became Lloyds Bank before they too moved out. Ben’s Beds is based on a famous Leeds carpet shop that in the 1990s made a beautiful old church look almost exactly like I have made Ben’s Beds here in Chandwell’s old town hall.
