      @@xmg_gg So it looks like you've mostly copied the Lenovo Legion Pro 5/7 line here on the 16 inch model external design, and then added your liquid cooling. That's probably a very good idea, and I hope you sell a ton of them! Lenovo needs to get their ass kicked for putting out a $4k pumped-water-loop laptop that doesn't actually have the liquid loop touch any heat sinks, and then only putting the best QOL stuff in that stupid machine. Presumably they were going to have an external cooler but then somebody realized patents were a thing.

    I love how they keep working on the watercooling and making it better and better. A bit of a let down that the 17" model is getting less attention. But 16" from my experience is a pretty good sweet spot for size and portability and I'm sure is the more popular size. So not surprised it got the new chassis. I wish they got new Gan chargers like some of the bigger companies got. But maybe that'll come later?
    I know it's a pipe dream, but can you imagine a water cooled 14" laptop? Probably too small to make it happen, but that would be so cool if they actually pulled it off.

    Hey there Jarrod.. that's SO MUCH BETTER. Last time we chatted, I had the previous 16" on order, but they could not deliver on time. I eventually opted for the Asus Strix 18" with the RTX 4080 from Best Buy via a black Friday sale for under 2K. I'm so glad I went the ASUS route. There were a ton of reviews on Best Buy that talked about backlight bleed. My unit has none of that. The 18" screen, because of my eyesight, has made all the difference, and I'm able to work a full day without discomfort. I'm excited to see how this new XMG unit performs. I'm sure it will be awesome. I'm glad they got it updated. This looks really cool.

    I doubt that they will offer attractive prices competing with the Legion Pro 7. At this point, looking at the European market, you could get the Legion Pro 7 with 4090 in the UK Lenovo for 2300€. When it comes to the German market (where XMG comes from), you can get the Legion Pro 7 with 4080 for 2399€ almost on the spot. With that in mind, and looking at XMG's prices, I doubt they will be able to break through because their prices are simply too high. Let's be honest - if they want to compete with giants like Lenovo, they need to have better prices than them.

For example, when limited to 80 watts, the i9-13900HX has 36% higher Cinebench R23 Multi score than the Ryzen 7 7840HS at 80 watts. Meteor Lake would be even slower than Phoenix in this scenario. Sometimes, just having a lot of cores helps a lot. For the more battery-optimized segment, we would rather bundle XMG FUSION with AMD "Hawk Point" at some point. I build myself a DIY watercooling solution for my MSI GE67 HX and it makes enormous difference regarding noise, even under full gameing load the CPU/ GPU never get hotter than about 60 Celsius, before it idled at 80 and the tiny fans where screaming under load.

  • @DuncDog
    @DuncDog Před 7 měsíci

    There's, of course, some level of irony that the only reason these obscenely crazy cooling solutions are needed for the CPU side is primarily Intel's absolute lack of power efficiency on the high end. I believe at this point the community is aware of notebookcheck's review for the engineering sample of the 17 inch version of this XMG NEO notebook. If you're not, they found this i9 was slower than both the old 13th gen i9 as well as AMD's HX and X3D flagships in quite a few cases. In at least cinebench, and nearly every game tested, the X3D was somewhere between a little bit and quite a bit faster than both i9s while drawing as little as a third of the power to do so.
    On an AMD equivalent notebook that lets them put all of the extra cooling directly into the size class up GPU that they now have the power and thermal budget for. If your CPU will only needs up to 100 watts, and you have a 330 watt brick, you can now put in a 200 watt GPU versus trying to power balance a 230 watt CPU allowance and a 170 watt GPU on a 330W psu.
    A water cooler would help cool both configurations of course, but personally, I would take the more efficient and faster CPU, and tolerances for a much beefier dGPU.

Will the GPU and CPU stay cold enough on silent fans profiles? Are the mechanical keyboard buttons very loud? instead of water cooled, i wonder if a simple metal connection to extend the heat pipe would work.. the external portion would just be a passive heat sink

    • @xmg_gg
      @xmg_gg Před 7 měsíci

      This would be too slow for two reason:
      1) Radiating heat through a piece of metal is way slower than pumping hot water out of the system.
      2) Once that passive heat sink is soaked hot (please don't touch), radiating it away with infrared light is way slower than having a proper 120mm radiator with fan.

    What i don't understand about this laptop is if you are going to have an extra block that you attach to your laptop, why making it a water cooling block? Why not an external gpu?
    Having the laptop with an integrated gpu only will make it perfect for daily tasks if you want to just take it for college or watch youtube, and when you want to play you just plug in your normal fan-cooled external gpu (which would probably have much better performance than a water cooled laptop gpu)

      What you describe is nothing new. You can get any laptop with a good CPU and Thunderbolt 4 and connect an eGPU to it. There is no need for a proprietary solution for this. For example, you can take a look at SCHENKER VISION 14 or VISION 16 with Intel Core i7-13620H and Thunderbolt 4.
      What's special about XMG NEO: you have a powerful all-in-one package that runs perfectly well without the water cooling unit. The water cooling is an optional add-on, not a requirement. // Tom

      CPU and GPU are directly connected via liquid metal to nickel-plated copper, which is soldered together with the air cooling system. Because the water loop in XMG NEO 16 goes *around* the CPU and GPU (instead of criss-crossing over CPU/GPU), as seen in 0:48, an empty water loop (filled with air) does NOT affect the thermal transmission from CPU and GPU hot spots to the heatpipes. // Tom

    I wish the 17" had cooling as good as the 16, but this 16" (will be under aftershockpc laptops in Australia for anyone wondering) might be the overall best laptop of 2024. The screen is 500 nits now which is great vs last year 300 nits, and the cooling is just sensational. That CPU power output is crazy good.
    I just wish it had dolby vision, as that truly transforms Netflix on non HDR non 4K displays. Oh well.
    The Asus G16 is interesting and has a 240hz OLED but the GPU power limit is way too low and it's 7 grand with the 4090 in Australia.. It's ridiculous.. for just 1TB of storage and 32GB ram. For those prices, Asus can keep it. I paid less for my GT77 in 2023 with 64GB and 4TB and I get over 22K in timespy and the GPU always hits 170w+ even if the CPU is on 80 or even 90 watts. So......
    I actually think the Razer 16 and this Tongfeng (XMG, aftershock, Eluktroniks, etc) are the two to watch out for this year. I'll reserve judgement on the Dell X16 until I find out if they improved the panel or not.
