    14:43 my examiner actually told me right before the oral exam while we were getting my paperwork taken care of that “the commercial checkride is basically a glorified private pilot checkride.” And we did zero instruments through the whole flight. I passed my checkride a few days ago

    Honestly, I think this may confuse more people than help. An instrument approach and all this instrument work is not part of the Commercial check ride and that stuff is not in the ACS. A DPE can not ask you to do something not part of the certification standards and then fail you over it. If he/she even tries, you should probably discontinue the ride and go to the FSDO.

    Answer 1.5 was NOT on instrument check ride

    The only dynamic aquaplaning formula I've ever heard of is based on tire PSI - not inches of water. Is there another calculation, or was that just misspoken?

    Jason, could you explain the improved cruise speed from an aft CG? I understood and correctly answered the "less stable" piece, but don't understand how it could improve speed. Thank you.

    • @AustinWirl
      @AustinWirl Před 6 lety

      it increases our cruise speed because we need less tail downforce as the airplane has a tendency to have a higher aoa (this site might help clarify as well www.boldmethod.com/learn-to-fly/performance/how-does-cg-affect-aircraft-performance/)

    FYI, @24:12 you say the pyrotechnic device is REQUIRED for part 121 only. That's not what 91.205 says... it says part 121 is EXCLUDED from the pyrotechnic device; the rest of us (part 91/135) do have to have it in For Hire ops (asterisks mine, to highlight): "If the aircraft is operated for hire over water and beyond power-off gliding distance from shore, approved flotation gear readily available to each occupant and, ** unless the aircraft is operating under part 121 of this subchapter **, at least one pyrotechnic signaling device"

    I did not do steep turns, slow flight or stalls during my IFR checkride. I took the checkride a year ago

    Where in the PTS does it say you have to do slow flight, steep turns, etc.. on an instrument check ride? Section IV: Flight by by Reference to Instruments only talks about basic flight maneuvers and recovery from unusual attitudes.

      +Fallafel Tomatoe Everything he says, take it with a pinch of salt. He doesn't know what he talks at times and overrates himself!

      @@williampenley1260 You do not do either of those on an IFR checkride. Period.

    Shappy- you are on the right track for the forward CG stability, but for the wrong reason. With a forward CG, it creates a longer moment arm between the CG and the aerodynamic center also known as the center of pressure, where the vertical component of lift is centered upon. This creates a pitch down moment in the aircraft, or in aero terms, the aircraft has positive static longitudinal stability. How do we know that? When you stall an aircraft what does it immediately do... It pitches down. If it pitched up, that would sure be a bad day, huh shappy.

    I'm a big fan... But I think you've got the requirements for over water flights wrong.
    NOT FOR HIRE REQUIREMENTS - As far as I can tell there are no requirements for over water flight in a private not for hire small single engine piston. 91.509 is for large aircraft/turboprops/etc and does not apply to 99% of the aircraft being flown by us newbs.
    91.205 for hire - all occupants need approved flotation "gear" AND the plane needs at least one pyrotechnic device. (one Pyrotechnic device does NOT apply to 121... there is probably a whole different set of applicable reqs for 121)

      @tiny_toilet Před 4 lety

      91.509 applies to everyone, but, yeah, the pyrotechnic bit was wrong.
